Most people think PATCH is simply an organization that helps you find childcare, which it is! It’s the only Child Care Resource and Referral Agency in Hawaii. If you call in needing a list of licensed childcare providers, this is definitely the agency to call. PATCH can assist you in finding what’s right for your childcare needs, whether that be at a licensed center(infant/toddler or preschool center) or a family childcare home. They also have a ton of resources for parents including subsidy assistance, quality care programs, training classes, and can direct you to other agencies/companies that fit a parents request or needs. What a lot of people don’t know though, is that PATCH does so much more than help parents look for childcare. PATCH is definitely well known amongst the ECE community for offering a variety of low-cost training classes. Classes include a variety of topics that range from child development, communicating through sign language, infant and toddler social/emotional development, how to incorporate learning through play for your child/children you work with, and even how to deal with children who have challenging behaviors. Educators and parents, or even anyone interested in learning more about early childhood and development, are encouraged to take classes. Classes are held around the island and are essentially free. PATCH also has online classes available for a low-cost fee. The recruitment program offers free services to assist those who want to start up a family child care center in the comfort of their own home. PATCH helps you figure out what you need to get started, supports you through the licensing process, and provides lots of resources and information about starting, completing, and maintaing your business. The USDA Food Program asists FCCs in getting reimbursed for providing nutritious meals to children. PATCH also contains the CANOES registry – a system that tracks professional development of early childhood educators, another free service! PATCH also offers an ECE Scholarship that reimburses students/people who have taken college credits that relate to Early Childhood Education. This agency definitely offers very diverse assistance to pretty much all members of the ECE community. If you’d like to know more, give them a call or visit their website!
