This place serves one of the very best teriyaki steak. The best part is that they did not cover it with too much sweet teriyaki sauce. It’s lunch plates come with California rolls and salad is a perfect combination. Also, quality Japanese green tea and filtered water are served. I used to dislike the place because of its unfriendly cashier. Now, the owner’s daughter took over made it much more desirable and is one of my favorite place for Japanese dishes.

Always fresh food. Fresh fish, fresh ingredients. Great service. Fast and friendly. They have lunch specials, early dinner specials and late night specials before 1:30AM. Love this place!

The food is alright but the SERVICE is BAD. The elder lady who was serving us took our food away without asking if we finished the food which we didn’t. She also keep eyeing the bill on our desk waiting for us to pay n leave. After we paid the bill one of the chairs left some major stains on my cousin’s pants. Not sure if the stains will come off. The cashier elder lady didn’t seem to care that it is her chair in the restaurant that cost the stains. Said she cannot do anything without receipt where she got it not too long ago. The chairs we were siting on got these tapes all around the chairs. The chairs looked like it may need some new ones to replace the older ones. We just done with dinner did not want to have more argument so ending up just take the tips back. It kind of ruin our day.

We got the 3 item combo($ 27) and the Salmon Skin Salad($ 10). Good amount of food for two people. The combo was average. The miso butterfish had good miso flavor and moist inside. The Unagi was a bit on the rubbery side. The sashimi was fresh and tasty. Salmon skin salad dressing very citrusy but the salmon skin was nice and crispy. Service overall was good and friendly. They do a good job of keeping your tea filled. Can park in the parking lot but if it’s full then there’s also metered parking on King St.

Late night Special. Starts at 9. Long time offering. Quick and efficient. Quality is what you expect for the price point. For me, i like it. This is old school local Japanese fare, think of it as home cooking.

Average quality food. Pretty pricey regular menu but go for happy late night which is pretty good for what it is. They also have an early one which is more worth it if you are going for dinner. Night happy hour starts at 9pm. Unagi is small portion happy hour menu.

Since moving to Hawaii from Colorado, I’m constantly surprised by the accessibility of decent eats after 9pm that isn’t overpriced bar food or greasy fast food. I work evening shifts from 2pm–«close»(which means anywhere from 10pm-1 am) with no established breaks. That means when I clock out, I’m starving! Luckily, my co-workers recommended some restaurants that cater to the late night crowd, Sushi King being the top of the list. First impression: clean, spacious, surprising amount of staff, prompt seating, decent amount of customers at 12:30am Likes: –The miso soup they serve is odd yet comforting. It’s like they started making traditional soup with carrots, onion, meat(?!) then realized«hey, people expect miso» so they dumped miso soup in the pot rather than chicken broth. It’s hot, filling, flavorful and promptly served. Important when you’re starving! -«Jumbo Platters» are aptly named and priced well-$ 12. That gets you protein, rice, salad, 6pcs of basic California roll or Spicy Tuna. I’ve ordered the Ahi Katsu, Salmon Katsu, Unagi and the Ribeye. Both katsus were perfectly crisp and the ribeye was seasoned well. Unagi is great! For a $ 2 up charge, you get a big filet of well cooked eel with unagi sauce. –Specialty rolls are presented well, fish and produce are fresh Dislikes: –Ribeye platter was thinly sliced, well done meat– not my favorite way to eat steak. –Salmon katsu comes with a weird sauce– Sriracha aioli floating in katsu sauce… well that’s what I think it is. –À la carte items are pricey and the Specialty rolls cost more than the jumbo platters. Two pieces of nigiri are $ 8+. –some of the menu items have no descriptions. Kinda tricky when ordering a Hawaiian roll and the server points at a small, blurry picture of a sushi platter on the menu as the«description» –Service can be spotty. On a good night– seated, food ordered, food served, check– 20 min. Other nights– it can take almost an hour especially if you order sushi rolls. Overall: I like this place for late night eats and I come here at least twice a month. Food is served hot and seasoned well. Service is decent and my water cup doesn’t stay empty long. Advice for first timers– if you’re on a budget, stick to the specials! Also, it’s tucked behind Shabu Shabu so you might miss the turn if you’re not paying attention.

Sushi King is a quaint neighborhood Japanese restaurant that is crowded at dinner, then thins out considerably by 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings. Great teishoku early bird specials between 5:30 — 6:45 p.m., very filling! Was a good venue for my mom and her sisters(all over 85 years of age…) for dinner. We had a nice evening, though we had to ask for ice water and other things throughout the evening. The staff was friendly enough.

Sushi here was so fresh I couldo have sworn that they just catch the fish an hour ago. My friend and I ordered sooooo much food that I had two containers of leftovers. The service was great. They do need more parking spaces. We arrived at 9PM which I thought would be a good time and easy parking. Boy was I wrong. We ended up doing laps for like 20 mins looking for parking. The only other thing that really bothered my friend and I was the cash out dude’s inability to do his job of cashing us out. No idea why it was so hard for him.

The reason I am only giving three stars is because they need to work on paying more attention to their customers. We were first given water when we were seated and it was small cup(which I understand we don’t want to waste water) but we didn’t get a refill till our meal was done and my boyfriend had to ask for water! If they paid more attention when our food came out they would have seen both of our water cups empty… And in need of more water. We ordered soft shell crab which we thought was a roll but was really just crab & that was surprisingly delicious. My boyfriend got the combination dinner with miso butterfish and tempura, and I got the late dinner special of shrimp & vegetable tempura. My plate was worth it for the price. My boyfriend loved the butterfish so that’s good. I don’t know if we’ll come back here. We prefer going to Gyutaku instead to get our tempura and«Japanese» dinner fix.

Overall impression: Can’t beat the price! Average price for happy hour(after 9pm): $ 12 Positives: –so cheap! –the food is really good! –open late! –air conditioned –free parking –they were really nice and pretty fast too Negatives: –limited parking THISPLACEHASONEOFTHEBESTHAPPYHOURSEVER! They give a ton of food, although I guess most of it is rice. But they give generous portions of meat. The roll sushi they give with their plates is delicious. The beer is cheap. The waitresses are nice. The only problem is that sometimes the happy hour gets busy so the waitresses have to wait on multiple tables and the service can slow down.

Came here after 9:00PM on Labor Day so there wasn’t any people except for a table here and there. It’s located near by Tea Farm Café and it’s right next to Shabu Shabu King It was my first time here and the place didn’t seem so shabby. I looked over the menu and decided to get one of the jumbo dinner platters which is served with soup and a choice of three types of sushi: California Roll, Cone Sushi, or Spicy Tuna. I think I decided to get the ahi katsu with the spicy tuna and my bf got the salmon katsu with california roll? or vice versa LOL I can’t remember what we ordered but one of us had fish xD Our food came out and we both drank the soup first. What’s different about their(miso?) soup is they have a bunch of veggies inside which makes it more filling and hearty because they’re cooked down really softly ^_^ That was probably the best of my dish lol I didn’t care for the salad because the dressing just kind of ruined it for me. I’m not sure what it was but it was pretty sour so it wasn’t my cup of tea. The spicy tuna roll was just bleh xP I have high exceptions for spicy tuna because I really love it but their spicy tuna was more red than you would expect??? Like it kinda freaked me out a bit O_O and it was just too mushy for my taste :/but I sucked it up and just slowly finished them all xP I’m pretty sure I got the fish katsu and that was just too overcooked for my taste. I wasn’t really a big fan of it and I ended up not even finishing it. I took it home but it didn’t taste any better the next day… Overall, I’m just not a big fan of this place. I’m sure they have better menu items but I don’t think I’ll come back to figure it out

This place seems to be popular among the«old timers» but I have to say their salmon katsu is delicious! That’s what I usually order. I’ve tried their sushi as well, and it always taste fresh. I recommend their early bird dinner special, because you do get a lot for the price you’re paying. Parking is usually packed, but there’s metered street parking around the area.

My husband and i were craving sushi on a Friday. What sushi place isnt crowded on an Aloha Friday? Called Doraku. booked. Husband said, «Oh, what about sushi king?» Good choice, Babe. We got there and there was a wait, but luckily because there was only two of us, we took the sushi counter seats. They were slammed so it took a little while to get our waters and hot teas, and then for them to take our orders, but as soon as we ordered, it took about less than ten minutes for our food to arrive. Holy huge portions! I ordered the two choice combination dinner of rib eye and ebi fry. The waitress didn’t ask me how I wanted my steak so it came out well done but the flavor was still good. When the ebi fry came out… my eyes lit up because I was expecting tiny ebi fries. But nope, they’re huge. Tempura size ebi fries with also onion fry and zucchini fries. The sauce that complimented it as well was delicious. We also ordered sushi — a volcano roll which had shrimp tempura, avocado, and spicy ahi. It was delish. I also had the sunrise roll which was the California roll with ebi on it. Delish too. I was stuffed. Satisfied. And will be back!

Haven’t been to Sushi King in probably 10 years or so! I remember it for it’s late night menu but my how times have changed… now I’m swinging by for their early happy hour menu! The early happy hour starts at 5:30 and ends at 7. You need to order by 6:45 as stated on the menu. There are about 10 combinations to choose from such as sashimi, california roll and tempura. I believe they are about $ 16. I ordered the chirashi and sushi early bird special for $ 16. It came with 3 pieces of nigiri(ahi, shrimp and something else), sashimi(ahi, salmon and some white fish) and some sushi rice with what I believe was masago on top of it. It also came with a small but hearty bowl of miso soup. They offer a keiki special for about $ 8.50 or $ 8.95. It comes with a juice box, ebi fry(mostly fry, not much ebi), about 3 pieces of chicken karaage, arabiki sausage and rice plus a small cup of jello. Service was fast and they bring the food out really fast too. Quantity was ample for the price so I would say the value was good for the happy hour menu. Parking is located in the lot next door. There are a decent amount of stalls but it does fill up.

I love sushi king! I used to come here a LOT during college. The midnight special is so affordable and the portions are amazing! College kid + cheap eats = happy customer! Lol But anyways, the fish is always fresh. I have a love of toro so I get either chuutoro or ootoro(highest quality) and they taste«oh so good»! The early bird special menu is also good cheap eats too. The specials come with rice, vegetables, miso soup, and then three choices of entrees, like sashimi, tempura, and another protein. To be honest, their food is really good so I’ll try to explain some individually. So the cutlet(pork, chicken, ahi, salmon) is really good! Battered and fried just right. The tempura(shrimp, vegetables) same thing! The service is really good. The Japanese waitresses are really nice! And if you’re studying Japanese, it is fun to converse with them! Prices great, customer service awesome, and food is OOISHI!!! One my favorite Japanese restaurants!

Sushi King, You deserve my 5 stars! Here are my reasons: 1. bestest miso soup ever, very authentic! Loved everything in your soup. Typical miso soup comes w/tofu or seaweed, this soup has more than Tofu & seaweed.(You would have to go! to see what I mean) 2. Green tea, not your typical green tea.(taste roasted, so good with our meal) 3. Your late night special at $ 11.45, can’t go wrong! So worth staying up for U, Sushi King! The late night special menu are all good choices! & great news! Are you ready for the great news!!! Now the late night special starts after 9pm, instead of 10:30. =) This is my go to spot, after movies!(Perfect for date nights w/the Mr.) Don’t forget to check out Sushi King! You won’t be disappointed! You def. will get more«bangs for your bucks» with this late night special!

This review is based on 2 recent visits to Sushi King: *Visit 1 — Our party of 5 walked in at 6:00pm on a Saturday, right during the dinner rush. Despite all tables being full and other parties in line ahead of us, Sushi King was able to accommodate us after a reasonable wait. Yahoo! *Visit 2 — Us again… last minute dinner out, this time on a Friday. Same time, same channel. Same results! Our experience from both visits was pretty much identical. Ice water and hot tea arrived immediately after we were seated… literally immediately. Our order was taken very promptly and miso soups arrived right after that… really, right after we ordered there were miso soups in front of us. The ladies that make up Sushi King’s wait staff had a great system between the waitress and busing duties. They were on top of everything — getting our party seated, taking our order, water and hot tea refills, «how are you doing?», the check… you name it. Sushi King offers a variety of Early Bird(5:30pm — 6:45pm) special teishoku meals for $ 15.95. Price to quality they just might be the best value in town. All of our food arrived piping hot and fresh very shortly after the order was placed. All in all everything we experienced at Sushi King was lighting fast, yet we never felt rushed. All of the staff was competent, attentive and friendly and most importantly, left us with a lasting impression that they valued our business. In fact, none of us could recall service — at any restaurant in any price range — so much on point. 5 stars for unmatched service. Ok…so Sushi King may not be the best sushi joint in town but they take care of business and as a result, will continue to have ours.

For a person like me who works the swing shift most of the time right outside of Waikiki, this is my go to place for some decent Japanese fare at a pretty decent price without burning a hole in my pocket. The Late Night Specials here are usually the way to go here for a meal that is a pretty good deal considering what you get. There are items such as Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, Salmon Cutlet, Teriyaki Beef, and a few other items as well. It comes with Miso Soup and a choice of Spiny Tuna Roll(which always seems to sell out fast) or California Roll as well. The entrée’s are served with Rice and a Salad right on the plate too. Priced at under 12 dollars, i can actually say that is actually good valur for your money considering how expensive Japanese food can be when ordering Ala Carte. These Late Night Specials are available now from 9:00pm till closing now so you can get your hands on these specials without waiting till 10:30pm. They also have a Late Night Curry Special as well which is pretty good too. I also enjoy the late night Chirashi Special which is just under 16 dollars. It has a decent amount of Sashimi and Sushi and priced at under16 dollars, i can’t complain considering just ordering two orders of any kind of sushi on any menu would cost just as much when you think about it. As we’ve been coming here over the years, there are a few things i have noticed about this place. I have noticed that they no longer automatically give you Hot Tea as soon as you sit down and look at the menu. All the times we have come before, the bus person would always give us water and hot tea at the same time and this is no longer the case. I’m not sure if they charge you now if you ask for it, but i have always thought that was a nice gesture to give you Hot Tea and Water without asking. And another concern that bothers me from time to time is the inconsistency of service here at Sushi King during the later hours. The bad service we got here was the reason we didn’t come here for quite some time and was turned off by it. Out of the three servers that i know that work there late at night, there is only one lady that always gives us great service no matter how busy they are and that’s the skinny Japanese Lady who works there. She is the reason why we come here praying to the Sushi Gods that we get her as our server because the other two ladies who work there, one who could pass for Jackie Chan’s Sister or Mother and the taller short haired Asian Lady who looks like a School Teacher who would give you the beating of your life if you played around in her class are just ok in what they do and they seem to have an attitude problem at times and just ignore us like we got really bad body odor or something of that nature. There is an older asian man who always mans the register and he seems like he’s Emporer Hirohito because we never see him smile but he’s actually a really nice guy and when Hirohito’s not there, there is a sweet older asian lady who i think is the nicest lady ever. The last time i had a complaint about the service there, she listened to everything i said to her and she apologized afterwards and that was the reason for us coming back and that was the saving grace for the two of us. My Mi Chan always likes coming here for the Mini Nabeyaki Udon which is just the right size for a petite asian woman and i think it hits the spot for her because it’s not real greasy and too filling but is light and refreshing and the ingredients they put in the Nabe are actually not bad in taste. There are also other items i have ordered off the Ala Carte Menu such as the Ahi Poke and several types of Rolls such as the Caterpillar Roll and Hawaiian Roll. The Sushi selection here is pretty good as well but i wouldn’t consider it stellar like the other places that i usually frequent but beggars can’t be choosers when this establishment is one of the few that closes in the wee hours of the morning. So in ending, all i can say is that if you are looking for decent Japanese fare at a pretty good price without raping your wallet clean, this is my go to place for a meal that hits the spot right before i head back home from a hard night’s work.

Sushi King… early bird specials! Awesomeness! Between 5:30pm and 6:45pm you can get a special menu on the back page of the menu. My favorite is the tonkatsu and tempura teishoku. Always tasty, always fast and when I’m looking for a quick Japanese meal that’s always great, Sushi King is my favorite stop. The only bummer to Sushi King, since the exercise studio opened up in the back of the lot, parking is a bit tight in the lot. I wish Sushi King would have some reserved stalls just for them. That would make it much easier to stop in especially during early bird menu time! If not though, you can always hunt a stall on the street. Definitely though, if you’re looking for a japanese complete meal with some of the greatest Miso Soup on the island, Sushi King’s early bird menu which averages under $ 15 is a great place to eat!
