If you like cheap eats and good food, like back in the day, there is no better place than Tsukenjo. It has been a favorite of mine since years ago. I know that the business changed hands after being closed down for awhile but the food is as good as ever and you cannot beat the prices. The plate lunches are anywhere from two to three dollars cheaper than anywhere else. The great thing also is that they open early and you can get most of the items on the menu and specials early on unlike other places where the lunch menu is not ready until later. And the workers there are very welcoming. You have to try this place. You will not be sorry, I promise.

Always a favorite for me., especially the roast pork with gravy all over,. I miss the lunch wagons but did go to the one on Cooke Street. The lady there is really nice and the portions are always delicious and generous. Just gotta go when there is curbside parking. Go early before they run out of food.

Tried the roast pork with gravy and hard egg on top for our department’s lunch. The pork was tender. The quality was good but the quantity was too much. It’s good to share it. Overall, I grade this average.

Tsukenjo has been a staple in Kakaako for a very very long time. Health nuts need not apply here… honestly. Also, if you are watching your salt intake, you might want to take care of what you order like say… shoyu-something. Otherwise this place has more than decent enough food to fill your tummy. Primary staple of Tsukenjo is their shredded roast pork generously doused in brown gravy… kanack attack bound to happen. Some of the local favorites on the menu will run out by 1pm. Will the food here be too your liking? Who knows? I know this though, I’ve been a customer for a long time… not a weekly regular but I make it a point to come here first when I have a craving for some roast pork, shoyu chicken, or meat loaf. Most plates are about $ 7 – 8, mixed plate will set you back about $ 10. Give this place a try… tastes are subjective… like looking at a piece of art.

Hands down one of the best places on the island for breakfast food. I actually tipped the money jar they had out on the counter. This place is so simple and they have a little stove on the counter so you know they’re cooking the food right and when you order. Right when I walked in the guy had already greeted us. Most food joints are already irritated when you don’t have an order ready or just the presence of anybody walking in. No, this guy was welcoming. Another reason why local joints are BEST places for your money. The guy is tall but he treated us like family. We ordered the breakfast special and we ate in. It came with eggs of your choice, bacon, Portuguese sausage, spam, sausage patty and, if you want, fried rice for 50 cents. A tad bit oily but the fried rice and all the meat and eggs were cooked to perfection. Overall I’m digging this place. 5 stars for you guys! And I love the pricing here as well as the food showing the price you pay.

I’ve been coming to Tsukenjo’s since I was a little girl. This place offers no frills, but simply put… it’s where you go for affordable, large portioned, home-style cooking. You can dine in(there are a handful of tables) or take out. Either way, just stand in line and order at the street side window. Food: My go-to dish, the Roast Pork with Gravy and Mac Salad. Don’t forget to request gravy all over(a.k.a. extra gravy on the rice). This is hands-down my favorite spot to grab roast pork. At Tsukenjo, the pork is tender and perfectly shredded, not too fatty. The gravy is just right, not too salty. The portions are also generous. Parking: May be tough when it’s busy as it’s located near the industrial section of Kakaako. Try to snag metered street parking around the area. Tip: Go early! They often run out of the popular dishes early. ** CASH only, no tax added. The price displayed is the price you pay!

Since the new owners have taken over I have been back 4 times and my results? In all 4 occasions the rice has always been too mushy to eat. Bad rice ruins the whole meal. How can anyone screw up making rice? ie; Zippys makes thousands of meals every day and I have never had rice too dry or mushy.

When I first ate here I ordered the roast pork with gravy. Yikes! I told myself I wouldn’t eat here again because the food was salty and very oily. I decided to give it another go since they’ve remodeled and the reviews were great. I ordered the roast pork with gravy, I wanted to taste the difference(if any). The first few bites were good, a little salty but bearable. After awhile, the salty taste and oiliness was overwhelming. I’m willing to it this place another try, but not the roast pork. Hoping the other menu items will make up for it. Wasted $ 8 plate. I don’t mind spending the money but I do not like to waste food. Keeping my fingers crossed for next time, in a few months to ensure the bad after taste is gone.

I used to eat here quite often… even to just pick up an already made tuna sandwich… I haven’t eaten here since the owners changed and by the taste of things… well… I WON’T be going back… I didnt… more like I couldn’t eat my pork Adobo… it was SALTYSALTYSALTY! There was not even enough rice to camouflage the saltiness.. I did eat all the toss salad which I have to sadly say was the highlight of my lunch… I think my tongue is still shriveled from the salt…
