I love this place — their food is delicious, homemade and always fresh!

The turkey sandwich was great. Loved the avocado and the red tip lettuce on the huge sandwich. The chicken soup was tasty with lots of chicken. Its nice to find a good sandwich shop in the UH area.

Working in this neighborhood, the lunch options are slim to none. I stumbled upon Café Flores through Unilocal and gave it a chance. Upon walking in, I felt like I stepped into a cute café in Montrose, a refreshing change of atmosphere for the area. Everything is fresh and homemade, including the bread which they bake on premises. The sandwiches are gargantuan! The very popular half sandwich /half soup is really a gigantic sandwich and generous bowl of soup for $ 8, including a drink of your choice. Wam, bam, thank you ma’am! The owner is definitely someone’s very sweet and loving abuela. You cannot go wrong with the chicken tortilla soup. The two times I have dined here, I have enjoyed the company of the Houston Fire Department and Police Department. You know if sworn officers are chowing down at a spot like this, it has to be something special!

I came here for a quick bite for dinner and was actually really disappointed. The tortilla soup seemed more like a Mexican chili or stew with all the beans and thick broth. Although it was okay, I just didn’t dig the chicken chunks. When you find yourself eating only bits and pieces of something, that’s a pretty clear sign that it’s not too tasty. I had a turkey sandwich with gouda, which sounded awesome but was less than tasty. Not my cup of tea, which, speaking of the tea, I had a cup of it which was good. Prices were great and I was excited that half sandwich and soup were a special that evening, but overall, this is not a place I’d hit up if I were in the area again.

Each time I eat here I’m reminded there’s a heaven on earth! Food is prepared with the hiighest level of integrity, grace and delight.

Café Flores is a sandwich and coffee shop located in at the intersection of Lawndale and Wayside Elena Ruth(2⁄5) — The Elena Ruth has the number two position in the list of sandwiches on the menu board. This is hoagie sandwich with an unusual combination of ingredients which include smoked turkey, cream cheese, and homemade strawberry jam. Sitting in the number 2 position, I reasoned that is must be darn good combination to warrant such a promenade spot in the menu. Unfortunately, for me the flavors didn’t work. The jam on my sandwich was applied with a heavy hand which drowned the smoked turkey and cream cheese flavors. But even on the bites that where not saturated in jam, the flavor combination was not for me. Also, it was not an easy sandwich to eat. The turkey slices keep siding out from between the bread and the excess of jam was all over my hands and plate. While I didn’t care for the Elena Ruth, I will be back to try some of the more tranditional style sandwiches.

I had been eager to return to Café Flores, having not eaten there in probably close to a year… and for the most part it’s still a great place to grab a bite in Houston… but a few things have changed. First the positives — if you’re looking to have a filling lunch at a fair price, I still recommend this place. I had the chicken salad sandwich(which is enormous, and can easily be considered two sandwiches) with chips and an iced tea for 8 bucks plus tax. This place mainly serves sandwiches and coffee, and does lots of catering. And I can tell you the owner — Berta — cares a lot about the place, as was shown when a relative of mine booked a personal party there several years ago. The employees there also seem to have a great attitude and are very friendly and courteous. But now on to a few negatives — There were no paper towels in the men’s restroom. There wasn’t even any empty holder or rack, indicating that there may not even be a place to put the towels. –Once my lunch was brought out, I was never«checked on», so to speak. No one ever asked if I needed a refill, more napkins, etc. It was 2pm on a weekday, and there were only two other tables filled at the time. Also, they had the radio on over the speakers, but it was full of static and cutting in and out. very distracting while trying to read the paper. I know they couldn’t do anything about the quality. but perhaps put in a CD, change the station, or turn it off. But that’s a minor issue, obviously. I still recommend this place if you need a quiet location to enjoy a coffee or a sandwich. Café Flores IS small, but they did make a great space in the corner with a sofa and two love seats for gatherings, which is nice. although when I went that day, the space was taken up by stacks of magazines seemingly waiting to be placed in racks. Outdoor patio is nice, but not well shaded… and we’re talking Houston, so probably 6 months out of the year, I’d recommend just eating inside. Nice part of town — Magnolia Park — lots of history, trees and green space. Overall, worth a visit if you haven’t been.

Progressive urban atmosphere without the pretentious attitude. This little café is a great addition to the neighborhood with art, coffee, food & free wi-fi. Best kept secret in 77023.

Sandwiches are massive, easily big enough for 2 people. If they have the tortilla soup, get it.

What a pleasant surprise to find a place like this in such a depressing area of Houston. My wife and I have had a few of their sandwiches and really enjoy the fresh baked bread and ingredients. I’m going to help get the word out on this place because we definitely need more places like these.

Café Flores is less than a block from my house, so naturally I go there quite a lot.(Of course, the Dinner Bell Café is almost as close and I NEVER go there, but that’s another story.) Their sandwiches range from«decent’ to «quite good,» and some of their specials are nice, too. I particularly like their hearty take on tortilla soup. I’m not fond of their coffee, but their muffins are terrific. I particularly like the carrot-raisin and blueberry ones, while my wife favors the chocolate, which is not really a muffin but a weapons-grade cupcake in disguise. You could easily have it for dessert instead of breakfast. Café Flores is also a nice place just to hang out and read, play a board game, or work on your Great American Novel on your laptop. I’m glad to have it in the neighborhood.
