My review is based on the sushi alone. One of the worst sushi places I’ve experienced. The rolls are tiny and the worst part is that they were warm ! I didn’t order anything cooked so why were they warm? They don’t have a lot of the things that their menu shows so that’s always a negative as well. Maybe their cooked food is better but this is definitely not a sushi bar you’d want to visit.

I was near Chinatown running some errands, and I decided today was the day I’d check out Café Kubo’s Sushi for lunch. I heard they serve a variety of ramen noodles, but when I got there, they weren’t serving them until after 5 pm. I decided to go with their sushi instead. The interior of the restaurant is nothing spectacular. You go up to the front to order, pay, and they’ll bring out your food. I went with Nigiri Combo B which included Tuna, Fresh Salmon, Shrimp, Squid, Eel, White Tuna, and a Tuna Roll for $ 11.49. I usually don’t like to eat sushi at places like this because I worry about how fresh the fish is when the chef’s are hiding out back. When I was given my plate of Nigiri, I was happy on how it looked. The tuna roll was rolled tightly and the rest of the Nigiri looked on point. I’m not used to eating squid in Nigiri format, so it was weird to see it flattened out over seaweed and rice. I enjoyed the majority of the fish, except the squid was warm, stringy, and didn’t taste fresh at all. I felt the same way for the«Fresh» Salmon. Overall, I wouldn’t come back to Café Kubo’s Sushi for the sushi. The chef’s hide in the back so you can’t really ask how fresh the fish is. The café itself isn’t all that nice either. I would come back to try their ramen, but since Tiger Den is beside it, I would rather go there instead… Pros: –Free Wi-Fi(password is «ItscoldOutside,» and it’s case-sensitive) –Big parking lot in Dun Huang Plaza Cons: –Fish is hit-or-miss on what’s truly fresh

Sushi is alright, not the best. Much preferred their other dishes such as the chicken curry and udon. My friend enjoy their ramen, she said it’s better than the ones around Chinatown. Good prices(pretty cheap) and quiet setting. It doesn’t get really busy so it’s a quiet place to have dinner with your group of friends.

The lure of casual no frills Japanese food brings me here every once and awhile. I’ve been coming here off and on since it first opened, having been a fan of the original restaurant in Rice Village back in the day. Take your time studying the extensive menu. Definitely check out the daily special for a pretty decent deal. It’s counter service, so that’s definitely a plus when you’re in a hurry. Everything is self serve. I usually end up getting one of the curry dishes with extra pickles. It’s not the best in town, but it’s satisfying nonetheless for a decent price. I also enjoy the kastudon, and the takoyaki is pretty tasty for a snack. The rice they use is tasty. However, I don’t order sushi here. I find the fish portion in the sushi to be small so I tend to steer away from it. Once upon a time a liked the philly roll here. I recall the salmon being fresh. They do offer ramen here, though I have never had it. It looks like it’s gone through several makeovers to fit the trends of the popular ramen establishments in town. Be warned, a lot of the stuff served here is prepackaged food that’s just heated up or cut up and served. There’s some fun Japanese fashion magazines you can flip through while you’re eating.

They’re just okay overall. I ordered the pork cutlet curry and it was pretty good mainly because I’m not too hard to please on food and I was starving from my road trip. The rice was warm and the cutlet is crunchy on the outside with semi tough meat on the inside when you’re cutting it with a spoon but it’s not too bad when you’re eating it. I wish they provided knives. The curry has a mild taste, texture is similar to gravy, and a tad on the watery side. I enjoyed it and it was filling. The chicken curry tastes the same, but with tender chicken meat. I’ve had better chicken curry elsewhere. Since it was curry, I was worried about the spices used, but it’s not spicy at all. Less flavor and spice compared to more authentic curry, but I’m okay with that. My plate had a side of pickled red ginger which I didn’t touch. I also tried their 12 piece takoyaki and it was wonderful. Good size takoyaki balls with enough sauce and good octopus pieces inside. I don’t think you can mess up takoyaki though. The ramen, however, is not that great. The pork slices were too dry and crunchy– not how it’s supposed to be in ramen, and the broth wasn’t made well. Tiger Den is near this area and I’d rather direct you there for better ramen than this, but go to Jinya if you don’t mind going further for best quality. No table service, so it’s not required to tip. You grab your own drinks and utensils at the area over to the left of the cash register. There are not a lot of customers at this place because there’s better food around. You can come here if you don’t want to be somewhere that isn’t too packed, but I think I’d rather go somewhere with great food, especially if I’m not staying very long in the city.

Kudos to the owner for prompt and professional response. I like Kubo a lot, both the fine dining Village location and casual fix in Chinatown. Food is good and they are recommended by two Japanese friend I know as their go-to place for Japanese food. Trust is important when it comes to raw seafood. So here, I revised it back to 4 stars as deserved :)

I liked their food. It was pretty good. I also like the fact it’s self service. They have good selection and the price is reasonable.

Meh, go somewhere else. Girl needs to get off the phone and pay attention to when people are standing there waiting to order while she sits on her phone. Food was mediocre. They want to charge you for a dime-sized spicy mayo bc their don bowls lack flavor.

Coming into the place, I noticed that it was a nice small place serving a variety of dishes. I ordered the spicy miso ramen. The price was what you expect for ramen. Usually at the places I’ve been to, they give a description of the things in the ramen but this place does not. When I asked the girl at the counter what was served the ramen, she was not very helpful and just pointed to the picture. When the ramen came out, it was not even spicy and broth was okay. Not only that, but there was way too much cabbage in the ramen(something I have never even had in my ramen at any other place). My friends ordered the curry chicken rice and the karage chicken ramen. The curry chicken was not spicy and was already cooled off when we got it. The karage chicken ramen was bland. We also ordered two sushi rolls but I don’t remember the names because they’re not even worth mentioning.

I am a ramen junkie! And Kubo’s was my original ramen spot before Tiger Den opened. The spicy miso ramen is awesome. I’ve had my Japanese friends join me here for a meal and they approve. The bento boxes are good. I really enjoy the Japanese style beef curry. I don’t eat seafood but my friends say the sushi is very good. I’ve been to Japan many times. It’s how I developed my taste for Japanese cuisine. Kubo’s passes the test. Enjoy.

The Onigiri is only sold on select days and barely have any filling in them. The quality of the food isn’t as good as it could be for the price they sell at. Fairly fast though.

Sushi is great service is great combinations and all it had a young bar type of feel but the seats are nice and fancy the atmosphere is great. Overall I had fun here and will be coming again if I have a chance :) I really wanted to shake the front ladies hand and the chef because they put in a lot of work in the kitchen. I had the Thursday special for 599 and it was super good great job guys thank you

I usually don’t come to Chinatown for sushi. But I was bored with my grandparents, waiting for someone, so I decided why not. The sushi was definitely great. I don’t remember which one I had. We tried a few and split them to keep our stomachs fed before dinner. I’ll go ahead and say great sushi. Amazing flavor. Every piece was great. As for the environment. It was alright. Not horrible, just the average set up shop you’d catch in Chinatown, or any Chinatown for that matter. Sushi makes up for it though!

This is a quick and easy place for lunch. I always get the fried shrimp bento box. I still need to try the ramen. This place is nothing fancy, but it’s good.

I was in the mood for rice or noodles. And I wanted to meet some friends in a casual setting, so we met at Kubo’s. They have a happy hour M-F 4:00pm — 7:00pm where bottled beers and sushi rolls are discounted. When you walk in, go up to the counter to order and pay. You will find the utensils on a side bar. They will bring your food to you. I really like the mackerel and rice bento box. There are some long bones so be careful. The presentation of the box is nice. The rice is topped with sesame seeds, the bean sprouts are delicately laying in a decorative muffin liner and there are ground radishes that resemble fine snow. There is an appetizer that is like fried chicken and that is a must have. The Kubo sushi roll is delicious if you love eel sauce and fried shrimp. If your eyes are bigger than your tummy, there is a station with to go containers and bags that is self-serve. Overall, I think this is a solid place with a casual atmosphere and tasty food. The prices are low and the restaurant is friendly and well-lit.

I like their spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls the most. They also make pretty good takoyaki. I used to like their gyudon but rent must have increased because now it’s just a lot of rice and not a lot of gyu. I’ve also had their spicy tekka don which was good and filling. The katsu curry is not bad either. Kubo’s Café is not a high end Michelin rated restaurant. It’s a fast food café like those in Japan. I like this place because it reminds me of Japan and you get to eat while reading fashion magazines and manga or watch Japanese television. They also have wi-fi! After eating you can walk on down to any number of boba tea places too.

I’ve never tried takoyaki and wanted to try it so I did some research to see who did the best in town. Unfortunately, dragon den was closed so I went ahead and called this joint for an order of takoyaki to pick up; 8pieces for $ 6(not bad) 1star, Packaging The takeout packaging didn’t make any sense, the takoyaki was placed in a flimsy paper plate, wrapped with platic wrap. Now I’m not beating them up for this, but come on! Its common sense, no? When you deep fry something, or just want to perserve its texture the last thing you want is condensation. By the time I got to my takoyaki everything was soggy, I mean the plate was flismy and barley holding up –_– But, I understand that they wanted to keep the takoyaki save from polution and chem trai… jk anywho moving on. 2 star, Taste This being my first time, I can’t tell if its suppose to taste like this or not but, I wasn’t really fond of the taste; it was soggy on the outside, completley raw inside with an over cooked octopus that I had to force down my throat after chewing on it for a minute. Overall it didn’t suit my taste palate so I won’t be returning. Edit: I believe a business should always be willing to take construtive criticism, how do you expect to better your business if your not willing to hear the negatives? Over all I was not satisfied with your takoyaki, food is meant to taste good and I just didn’t get any good flavors from yours.

I’ve always seen Kubo’s in the Dun Huang plaza, but I never ate here because there are so many other awesome restaurants in the same area. I came here for lunch recently and I was pleasantly surprised. The prices are reasonable and the sukiyaki beef bento(~$ 7.50) was pretty good! There was a decent amount of meat and also came with salad, edamame, and a potsticker. My friend’s chirashi, though, had very little fish and a LOT of rice. I also really wanted to try their ramen and gyu don(beef bowl), which seems to be a recommended item on their menu. I’m infatuated with gyu don right now after going to Japan, and I hope Kubo’s can satisfy my beefy bowl cravings in the future: P.
