Don’t expect prompt service. Expect to wait a little longer than usual for your order. We arrived on a Friday afternoon about three pm. Like all of the other reviews, it’s just two people running the whole place. We started with the Agadashi Tofu. It is perfect! The tofu is not runny, and has a velvet like texture. Take your time, and enjoy the sushi. It is definitely one of the best places in Houston for Ebi, Tai or Nigiri. If you can get past the lack of person power, this is great place to enjoy sushi.

Having never previously heard of Sushi Miyagi, I was a little skeptical when my friends asked me to join them for dinner there. Turns out however that Sushi Miyagi is a wonderful mom and pop sushi shop that lies deep in the heart of Chinatown! Upon entering, you’ll immediately notice that the restaurant is pretty small and not very fancily decorated at all. Do not let looks deceive you however. Simply stay put and you will be in for a pretty amazing sushi experience! Regarding the food, I shared a couple of items that were delicious. Our main item was the Chirashi Deluxe which is basically a huge assortments of fresh fish over rice. The fish was beautifully cut and tasted absolutely amazing. I highly recommend ordering this as the amount of fish you get for $ 30 is a pretty good deal. We also ordered a couple of pieces of sushi on the side. Each of these orders come with two pieces. Of the ones we ordered, I enjoyed the unagi the most which is fresh water eel. On top of all that, we also had an order of the katsu don which came out looking and smelling absolutely delicious. I definitely enjoyed everything I ordered! Simply put, Sushi Miyagi offers some pretty damn good fresh sushi at a reasonable price. I will be looking forward to my next visit here.

Look for«SUSHI» sign to find this lovely restaurant, it won’t say«Sushi Miyagi» on the building. Look no further for one of the best sushi in the area, made by a Sushi who works with the patient diligence of a craftsman, and find your appetite in a place as quaint and colorful as its hostess. I came for a filling Chirashi lunch bowl, then I decided to skip dinner and added on a Crazy Maki roll to prolong my dining experience. You’ll want to do the same when you come here, so come hungry, leave a review, and keep bringing it up to your friends and family later. P. S. — I think they were playing Lindsey Stirling on the speakers; very energetic violin music. Wasn’t expecting that, ha-ha. Was expecting something more quiet.

Gave this place a try because I am pretty over Hokkaido and it’s increasingly awful sushi quality. 1. This place has some weird hours. They close at 7pm I believe so it’s kind of hard to catch dinner here on the weekdays. They’re not open on the weekends the last time I checked. 2. Extremely understaffed. The time I went, there was on sushi chef at the sushi bar and one lady that acted as a host and server. Although it’s a relatively small space, there are still a good number of tables for one person to be manning. As a result, it took a very long time for my sushi to come out. 3. They offer a decent variety of sushi for a place that has pretty low prices. I ordered the basic chirashi bowl and a good amount of Saba(mackerel) nigiri. The chirashi bowls are somewhere between $ 20-$ 24 for the basic ones and they offer another one that’s a bit pricier with more and different kinds of fish. It was a nice change to the chirashi bowls Hokkaido has. Quality and cuts of fish were definitely higher. The nigiri pieces were huge in terms of both the fish and the amount of rice. In fact, there was so much rice that I couldn’t even finish most of my meal. It was seriously not a proportionate amount of rice for just nigiri. Don’t think I’d come again even though the quality of fish is not bad.

If it weren’t for my sister, I never would’ve even thought of eating here because all you see for their sign is SUSHI. But, this place has super fresh and delicious sushi for a reasonably decent price! Their scallop hand roll is superb. We also ordered eel hand rolls and one of their combo sashimi bowls. All so good. Since this place is ran by 2 elder Japanese couples, service can be slow. But the food makes up for the service. I need to come back asap.

First off, I want to say that I understand that this is just a mom and pop joint and that it is just the two of them. However, I took off a star because we waited over an hour for our sushi. The place was somewhat busy, but I found this to be quite long even for the two of them. The woman is as attentive as she can be running the restaurant alone, but there really is just too much work for the two of them. Our sushi was delicious and the portions are quite large for the sushi. I got the salmon, yellowtail, and eel sushi. It was fresh, but not top quality. The maki is also great and they give a big amount of fish in the rolls. I had the alaskan maki. Overall I had no complaints about the food except for the prices. I took off another star because their rolls are definitely over priced. If you have the time to sit it a restaurant for at least an hour and a half, you should go to Sushi Miyagi. If not, skip it.

LITERALLY A Mom and Pop joint. ITISJUSTTHEM. If you are in a hurry or are super high maintenence/don’t understand basic Japanese food/suffer from affluenza or white privilege YOU need to GTFO you are not the only table there Don’t ask for everything to be fried. And don’t bitch and moan that mamma is taking other people’s orders. you have a million questions and didn’t even have an inkling of what you wanted in the first place And if the girl next to you reminds you it is just mom and dad And you say, «oh I know.» Fucking act like it Put on your big girl pants Shut the fuck up ANDGETITTOGETHER. Even the kids knew how much of a dumbass you were being. Ps You WEREN’T the first customers there. We got there at four pm with two other tables with us. The other three tables with us when you were there ARRIVEDBEFOREYOU. Real Japanese food doesn’t always have crispy things or is fried. I am sorry if all you are familiar with is kona and ra happy hour. And there was nothing wrong with your tea. IT’S CALLEDICE.

This is a place with a few negatives but the food is that good that it offsets the negatives. 1st negative — limited hours I went on a Tuesday for lunch since I had the day off. Their hours are limited since they do not open on the weekends and closes at 7pm. Can’t blame them since it’s just mainly the husband and wife working there. However, basically you just have to get off of work a little earlier or have the day off in order to try their sushi unless you work or live nearby. 2nd negative — takes time I always joke with my friends whenever I go there, I have to bring a book to ready(this time I actually brought a book to read). It takes a long time to get your food so if you are hungry, it is best to avoid. When I went on Tuesday, their dining room was already full. Two to three sets of customers were waiting at the door for a table! It was a 40+ minute wait to get my order. It also takes time if you need something or need to get the check(this time I went to the cash register so that I didn’t have to wait longer). Since I know that I won’t be visiting again soon(due to the limited hours not because I don’t want to), I decided to order a little more this time. I had the miso soup and hot green tea which were both good. Then, I ordered the lunch special the charashi bowl and the spicy scallop rolls which both were delicious. It is my first time having the charashi bowl, and I like the variety. The rice was also very soft and I love the egg(tamagoyaki) too. I think I will have to order this again next time along with my standard favorite, the shaggy dog roll. Thus, I conclude, if you have time and patience and available hours during the time this place opens, it’s worth to give it a try. Be sure to bring a book, your phone, or maybe just a really talkative friend.

There is a line as soon as you get there so please get here early at least 15 – 30 minutes Before opening but trust me you will not be disappointed. This has to be the best sushi in town if not in Texas! We have always gotten chef choice and have NEVER been disappointed. I would always wait to eat here it’s worth it every single time.

Absolutely amazing! Anyone who has the chance to eat here should take advantage of the delicious food here. I ordered the Chirashi bowl and was NOT disappointed. It was really well proportioned and had a perfect distribution of rice and an assortment of sea food. I found myself struggling to finish my bowl because it was pretty large. The hours are kind of weird but that’s because it’s an elderly couple who own the restaurant and do everything. They’re so cute! I would highly recommend getting here earlier during their hours. We came about 30 minutes after they opened and by the time we left there was a wait. This place is really as great as other people say and yes, there may be a wait but remember it’s two older people who are doing everything! Be patient. The food is worth it!

This is definitely a hole in the wall. It’s family owned business which seems to be a man and his wife. We ordered the miso soup, which is most definitely homemade. We also offered the sushi maki boat. I say it’s worth it. Enough for 3 people to chow down on. The salads are fresh and service was fast. It’s a small little restaurant that’s mostly an intimate setting, but they do have a traditional Japanese seating area that allows over 6 people or so. Great quality, quantity, and price.

in terms of sashimi. their cuts are amazing. from the freshness to thickness. everything is perfect. came here with a friend right when they open on a Friday afternoon. ordered the sashimi for 2. 65 dollar plate full of sashimi. it was plenty for both of us. left with full satisfaction. everything was spot on except the service. have you ever thought about hiring another sushi chef or another waiter? just a thought. instead of anyone waiting an hour for a plate of sashimi(restaurant had 2 other table other than my friend and I). I understand it is an old Japanese couple who owns the place but seriously. you can afford another sushi chef or waiter. no matter how good the sashimi is. after waiting an hour for the food nothing is worth it.

Finally got a chance to try this place due to all the great Unilocal reviews. Came on Wednesday at 11:30am. There were people already waiting for them to open the door. The sushi portion is generous. 4 pieces of nigiri will be almost a full cup of rice because the seasoned rice for each piece of sushi is huge. The fishes portion are generous, tasted fresh, but the fish grade is not premium. We couldn’t bite through the tuna in half because of the veining. Their age-dashi tofu is decent. Service was okay since they were not packed due to an early mid week lunch time. We’re glad we try this place but this is a one timer.

This place was packed at opening time, luckily we found a table. It looks likes there was only 2 people working, the sushi chef and the waitress. You have to be patient when you come here, but the wait is worth it. My husband had the Japanese curry lunch special and loved it. I had a sushi lunch special and it was great. The miso soup is wonderful. It is a small cute place. We will be back.

you don’t exist until the wife sees you. until then you’re jus part of the line. I still think about mister sushi miyagi… his movements; the years of practice it must have taken him to perfect his techniques; this man does not move without a purpose; his efficiency is an amazing sight… again, every move serves a purpose, every move is to complete the plate in front of him… I watched him almost the entire time we waited in line for an hour… I’m not sure why they don’t have help but I assume it’s bc they won’t get the help they want or don’t want to delegate… maybe they have their own rhythm…‘but these guys are like machines… the wife shuffling about in her too large flip flops, the husband shifting his whole body side to side behind the sushi bar, dressed neat with a tie and clean white sushi hat… anyways, I’m was more in awe when our food came out and every piece of fish and accessory looked like he had 30 mins to spend on it… he cares about his plate and the food… period. (I dunno who’s in the kitchen but the food we ordered from the kitchen was ok) … I’ll be back, jus hoping to find a time when there’s not an hour wait but if there is, I’ll bring popcorn. side note: I remember reading one Unilocalers review about how dirty the place is and it kinda pissed me off because she was probably focusing on the stains in the carpet… when I looked around I saw a very well organized space, even meticulous in its own way… look at the business cards on the fridge(by mister sushi miyagi) they are perfectly lined up in neat rows; wether that’s OCD or something else… I was able to appreciate the space for what it is; it’s unpretentious, completely barren of style or interior design but to say it’s dirty… I wouldn’t but that’s the thing about Unilocaling… everyone has an opinion… and we all jus read each other’s experiences… I’m learning I need to follow a few Unilocalers I trust in this area.

New hours! They’re not open Saturdays anymore(sadly). My boyfriend and I have been here a few times and yesterday we invited two more to join us for dinner here so they could finally try one of our favorite places to eat in Houston. We arrived at 6 pm on Tuesday and there wasn’t much of a wait but more people started coming in around 6:30. We ordered the Kara Age(Japanese fried chicken) and it was def a 5⁄5. The chicken was well marinated and juicy and there’s only a light crisp layer so it doesn’t take away from the flavor. Unlike most places in which the cuts are smaller, dry and plain. I’m not one to order Agedashi Tofu but we have in the past and it is def a must try here. I’ve read reviews about the crispy salmon salad dish here and it is indeed pretty filling even among 4 people. Surprisingly, I liked it more than I thought I would. We ordered other items such as different sushi pieces(I have yet come across a place that beats their spicy chopped scallop) and their sashimi combo with no shellfish. Everything was so good. All the fish tasted really fresh. The salmon was nice and buttery and the tamago(egg) wasn’t overly sweet as well as the inari(tofu skin, I also haven’t found a place that beats their inari and tamago as well.) Yes, you’ll most likely have to wait a while for your food because it is run only by a Japanese couple but I promise you it is very much worth the wait.

One of Houston’s classic sushi joints, Sushi Miyagi is essentially a must-go pilgrimage site for all sushi lovers in town! Owned and managed by a lovely old Japanese couple, this restaurant is where you will find traditional sushi with a homely vibe. Like any traditional sushi restaurant, Miyagi’s pricing can be a bit steep but you can get a pretty good lunch deal like a chirashi or a sushi combo for $ 12. Perhaps that’s why so many people crowd this restaurant even before it opens on a weekday lunchtime! My choice was the first sushi combo: five nigiri pieces(chef’s choice), six pieces of California roll, and a miso soup. I thought I wasn’t going to get full from this alone and had plan to go to the dim sum next door to fill up, but the nigiri pieces were surprisingly huge! It’s not huge as in a huge rice ball, but huge as in HUGE pieces of fishes! Good luck trying to eat this in one bite, but I mean why would you? The fresh fishes are too good not to savor in multiple bites. If you like sushi, you are going to like this place! If you never had real sushi, Sushi Miyagi is a great place to start. Overall, I recommend this sushi restaurant to try at least once.

Arrived at 3:30pm on a friday and we were the first ones(no wait). Ordered the following and shared with 4 people(came out to about $ 30/person): 1) Chirasi Deluxe-30 bucks for a good variety of sashimi, presentation was pretty and everything tasted really fresh, would order again 2) Crispy Salmon Salad-MMM, now my favorite salad in the world. Definitely would order again 3) Kinutamaki-interesting take on sushi, you can pick your fish(salmon, tuna, mackerel) and it’s wrapped in a vegetable(I forgot). 4) Scallops Sushi-so so good, indescribable and definitely would order again 5) Naruto-crab, avocado, & other stuff wrapped in thin cucumber. It was really cool, refreshing, and a nice change up from seaweed. The place is really intimate with only about 8 tables and a bar. The sushi is fresh and the presentation is on point. It is a little pricy, but the rolls are bigger than what you’re used to. It takes multiple bites to eat! If you want to have a nice meal and catch up with some friends, I recommend this place, but they close early(7pm), so double check their times!

Still continues to be my favorite spot to satisfy my sushi cravings. This time came at 3:10(they open at 3) and people were already lined to go in and we actually made it as the last two sitting at the bar. There’s constantly a line out the door, even at opening time! There’s less than 10 tables in there. Agedashi tofu. Always perfect. Hot and has the thin outer texture I like. Sauce flavoring is perfect everytime, I can literally just drink the sauce. My all time fave is still the salmon sashimi. It’s a big piece and the standout is that it’s always really fresh compared to most restaurants. We also had the bean curd, tamago, white tuna, tuna and unagi which were all good. Shaggy Dog roll is still my top roll I eat everytime I go. Tempura in it is big and fresh and covered w/a lot of crabmeat and mayo-they don’t skimp on quality-yum! Sitting at the bar was interesting as I saw up front how fast the sushi chef was making the food and how much technicality he put in. As we were leaving the people outside standing in line said«look how happy they are» when walking out of the restaurant– and we truly were! Go support a truly hard working mom and pop shop consistently serving quality food!

Sushi Miyagi is a cute, homey, small Japanese restaurant with an authentic feel and delicious food. Its outer appearance does not reflect the inside or its food at all. In fact, it’s probably the exact opposite! It’s run by a Japanese couple: the lady who takes orders, brings out food, runs the kitchen… etc, and the man who is in charge of the sushi. Things I love about Sushi Miyagi: –Agedashi tofu: the best I’ve ever had! Delicately fried tofu with slightly chewy skin swimming in a delicious sweet and salty broth… mmm… –Dragon roll with tempura sweet potato –Spicy salmon salad: a great value! There’s a ton of salmon in this bowl and it’s worth the $ 15 price tag. I would also order a bowl of sushi rice and you can make your own spicy salmon bowl! It can also last 2 or more meals that way. I highly recommend this dish: D –Tatami mat seating –Cute Japanese couple :) Things I don’t love so much: –Wait time(tip: come early! You’re probably good if you come before 6pm for dinner) –Slow service –Prices are kinda high Even though Sushi Miyagi is pricey, the quality of the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant keep me coming back!
