There was no place to sit because the 1 – 2 tables/counters were full. The smell from the kitchen was strong. Absolutely no effort was put into décor. Locals came in on a regular basis and the woman behind the counter knew them all. It was awesome. I ordered(take out) the Kung Pao chicken with white rice and a sprig roll. $ 7 or so: amazing. It was quite spicy, not the least bit of sweet for those that like cliché Americanized food, with a slightly oily gravy, had pretty fresh veggies and and high quality slices of chicken. I was the only guy dressed in business casual but it wasn’t uncomfortable, why? Because this place is simply fantastic. It’s a shame I live so far away, otherwise I’d be one of those regulars I saw come in and be treated like a friend.

Just tried for the 1st time as this place is only a couple miles away from me. Do to reviews I tried the Special Friend Rice(which consisted of shrimp, chicken, pork, rice, Brussel sprouts, green onion, etc.). Price was $ 7.49 and not bad for the amount of food. Very tasty and great customer service with a smile. Only reason for 4 stars is there was only 3 pieces of shrimp. Other than that there was plenty of chicken and pork. Still satisfied and will come again. If ordering the fried rice next time, I would just ask to make sure there’s enough shrimp.

I love this place, so much so that the owner recognizes my phone number and knows my usual orders for carry-out(orange chicken and any soup). The chicken vegetable soup has huge and fresh ingredients and the broth is not too salty or oily. The orange chicken has a nice complex flavor where sweet(but not too sweet) meets spicy. The owners are also super friendly and the people I meet there tend to be super friendly, too.

Yum! Inexpensive, very yummy ‘Americanized’ Chinese food. A little take out gem hidden in the heights.

Good Chinese food is hard to find, so when I decided to try Chirps I didn’t set my standards high. Thank goodness I didn’t. I ordered the chicken Lo mein. The chicken tasted like it wasn’t cleaned well and the noodles tasted as if they we’re cooked in old cooking oil. Shrugs. All in all I’m still on the hunt for good Chinese food in the city of Houston.

Best take out in the city. The sesame chicken is delicious. I’ve been coming here for nearly 8 years. Definitely recommended

I saw this place while driving to look for parking to go to Carter & Cooley and from quickly glancing at the review for this place, it seemed like I needed to make a stop and give it a try. The food is not bad at all. Yes, it’s Americanized Chinese food. But unless your restaurant is located somewhere near Chinatown with some name that I can’t pronounce, then I don’t expect anything authentic. The people who work here are pretty friendly as well. The only downside about this place is the fact that it is catered mostly for to-go orders. Now don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with places like that. Most pizza places are for carry-out or delivery only, right? However, for someone like me who’s wanting to have a nice relaxing lunch time, then this place is NOT the place. I enjoyed my meal. It was delicious. I did not enjoy sitting at the only table they have in the restaurant with all eyes staring at me. Considering I don’t live or work too close to here, I don’t see myself coming back here too often. However, for someone who wants some good Chinese food to go, you should definitely give this place a try. The fried chicken wings are pretty legit!

The food is pretty good. A bit oily for my liking but I guess thats what makes it pretty tasty. Can’t go wrong with their lo-mein!

Forget the chicken and fried shrimp. Go for the Chinese food! Their Lo mein reminds me of the noodles my mom used to make. It’s not saturated in sauce like other Americanized Chinese restaurants and there’s generously sized protein, bean sprouts, and cabbage stirred into the mix. Fried shrimp was cold and had too much batter. The fried chicken was okay and just a step about Church’s but more expensive than them. The fried chicken came with a side of fried rice which was horrible. It was soaked in fried rice and had no other flavor.

2nd time coming here and food has been good both times, staff is friendly, food isn’t overpriced like some places in the heights. Gave 4 stars instead of 5 only because of parking at times

Don’t be off-put by the exterior — this place has fantastic Chinese food. If you are looking for fast, inexpensive, and tasty General Tso’s or sweet & sour, come here.

Ew, no. I used to live directly across the street from this place. The owners are sweet, but the place is gnarly. in a non cool way. Plus i once witnessed 8 racoons totem themselves so they could get in thru the roof. Not exaggerating, they just climbed one on top of the other. It was terrifying.

Best place to eat in the Heights!!! It doesn’t get much better than this! Great to pick up! Don’t let the outside look deter you!

Chirps is one of those small neighborhood places that looks like it’s been around forever. The sign out front says takeout only, but they do have one table and a small bar seating area. The food is your typical cheap americanized«chinese» fare, along with other fried items(wings, fish fillets, etc.) The food is always cooked well and is generally quite fresh, and prices are very reasonable. This place doesn’t try to pretend it’s something it isn’t(unlike some other places in the heights area). They do take Visa/MC.

This is a no-frills review for a no-frills joint Good friend at a reasonable price around the Heights. Mom & pop operation with very limited seating. The chicken is fried to order to the wait can be a bit long depending on when you go. Lunch on weekends can get busy. We loved the wings. The fried rice was good too. They have a smallish menu with some standard Chinese takeout options. If you’re craving some unhealthy greasy goodness and you live near this area, you could do a lot worse

This is a small take-away stand across the street from the Kroger’s on 20th in the Heights. While they have an assortment of standard fare american chinese items the only thing I have ever ordered is the combo fried rice which is plentiful, delicious, and cheap. There is little room to dine in, and really no ambience that would make you want to, but it serves its purpose well for providing good, inexpensive chinese to the Heights.

I was in the area and quite hungry. Did feel like the usual fast food but wanted something tasty and cheap and as I’m driving I see this little place that offered Chinese and fried seafood. I like exploring new holes in the wall and boy was this a good one. The way I judge a Chinese place is by their fried rice so that’s the first place my eyes went to as the lady hands me a menu. Small special fried rice was about 4.50, but being hungry I opted for the large at about 5.75 ish. I heard the lady yell to the cook in(Chinese?) and heard some russling and goodness being stirred around a wok. A few minutes later the chef came out from the back, bagged up my plate with napkins, spoons, and soy sauce ad handed it right to me. As I drove off to my secluded parking lot of choice I could smell the fresh shrimp calling out to me. As I opened the plate i got a steamy woft of awesomeness. Large chunks of chicken, plump shrimp, and lots of little bits of pork. The shrimp was freshly cooked and was cooked perfectly. There was about a half a dozen in there. As I said the large chunks of chicken were also fresh and moist and the pork was just plain tasty. It also had the typical fried rice veggies, onions, greens onions, bean sprouts, and not too much egg. All the veggies were still crunchy and were not cooked way down at all. The rice itself was quite good and not overly greasy like some places I’ve had. All in all I really enjoyed my first visit here and will definately come back if I am in the area to try other things on the menu.

Fantasic Chinese food and great wings. The family run take out is cute and very affordable. The menu is small but covers a variety of of yummy selections. Try it if you are in the neighborhood.
