HEB

Grocery shopping today. I need pet food and treats so I decided to take a chance to see if anything had been done about the pet food and treats being shelved next to the pesticides and poison. Well of course nothing had been done. I have called into customer service and posted on social media and the HEB reps always say they gonna look into and take care of it. I guess they don’t care. Sorry it makes no sense why you would store these items together. So as usual I have to go elsewhere to get my pet items. Maybe I will reach out to the news makers.

An old school HEB that has been around before the newer fancy HEB’s arrived. It’s smaller and has your basics like any grocery store has which makes it easier to maneuver around. The employee’s are helpful & nice. In & out in no time. FYI: people stop comparing this to the new HEB’s. This is a classic.

First off, I’d love to give this place 3 or possibly even 4 stars, but I can’t.
The good: The people are friendly
The bad: The produce and meat selection is not only small, but the quality of the produce and meat is abhorrent. The impetus for me writing this review was having to spend several minutes digging through onions to find one that wasn’t mushy. This store is obviously getting the dregs of the HEB produce/​meat world. The cashiers are criminally slow. Sometimes its because they’re just talking to customers, sometimes its because they have to look up the code for EVERY SINGLE FRUIT OR VEGETABLE. I’m a reasonable person and I like friendly cashiers, I don’t like waiting for 10 minutes JUST TO START CHECKING OUT because the cashier is spending 5 minutes per person. Yes, this happened.
Am I going to keep going here? On occasion, but only because I can practically see this place from my house and the «food-​a-​rama» across the street is horrifying and the Kroger a few miles away is a pain in the D most of the time.
If there was a Trader Joe’s across the street, I would never go here. Ever.

Outdated. Tiny. Unhelpful employees. Slow cashiers.
I’m surprised that this HEB is still around.
I can count three Krogers within a few miles from here (43^rd/​Ella, 11^th/​N. Shepherd and 20^th/​Yale). Okay, a couple might be a few minutes drive, but it’s still worth the drive considering this HEB doesn’t really have much options for your grocery needs.
There’s also a Foodarama right across the street. I haven’t checked that place out, but I don’t think it can be any worse than this HEB.
Seriously, if you need grocery or if you just don’t want to be wasting your time. Plenty of other options around.

Born and raised in the Houston ‘burbs, I’ve been going to HEB since I was in diapers! Back then, most HEBs were small, but that was typical of grocery stores because Walmart Supercenters and Super Targets had not been invented yet. Unfortunately, this store is a remnant of those times! Nobody likes HEB for the pantry items; you can get those anywhere. Fresh foods, like organic produce, meats, bakery, and deli items are where HEB shines, and that’s exactly what this store is lacking. No tortillas, guac, chicken salad, or anything else made in store. It’s hard to shop here regularly and eat healthy. The worst part is that the nearby Kroger on Yale and 19^th is the same way. But at least there are two modern Kroger stores with wider selections in The Heights! The nearest HEB for Heights residents is the Montrose Market. I don’t always have time to go there so I end up settling for Kroger, which is a shame because I’d much rather shop at HEB. The HEB HQ should give Heights residents what they want and expand this store and make it comparable to other HEBs.

A tiny and old HEB compared to the newer stores. Everyone is always so nice! And they carry my Bigelow Jasmine Tea! I cannot find it at any other major grocery store.
The produce can be expensive unless it’s on the circular and is on sale. They have a small organic section but at least they have it! The meat department is decent and is fresh. There is no fish department but they do carry prepackaged salmon and tilapia.
The grocery aisles are decently priced and carry everything that you need.

This is the nastiest looking HEB. I had only been to the Vintage, Market Street, and Champions locations and thought they all were nice like those ones. I hate to admit this, but if this had been the first HEB I had tried, I probably wouldn’t be the avid HEB shopper that I am. There are so many grocery stores I avoid (maybe without good reason). Randalls for high prices… the Kroger near me for the smell of old meat… Foodtown because it’s just a mess. Maybe I need to reevaluate my quick judgment. I hope they fix this HEB up because I do really love the company. They treat their employees well and offer decent prices to their customers. I just don’t like this run down location.

For the love of the Heights, please put some corporate money into this store!
A nice neighborhood HEB would be a perfect addition for west Heights residents and the growing Garden Oaks. Unfortunately, this HEB is not even close to being a decent neighborhood go-​to… it’s more comparable to the Food-​A-​Rama across the street. This store is abysmally below par compared to all other HEB’s I’ve been to. It’s extremely limited on healthy selections and their wine selection is non-​existent (unless you like sugar-​laden cheap wine). A smaller Central Market or an upgraded HEB would be amazing in this location and do wonders for the neighborhood!

Seriously, one of the worst and most out dated HEBs around. They had NOTHING. Everything I needed was either not there or sold out. Wasted my time. Sticking to the Kroger’s near by or the HEB in Montrose or Buffalo Speedway.

I’m a big fan of HEB, but this was a bit if a let down.
I was on my way to a BBQ party in the Heights and needed to pick up a few things — guacamole, tortilla, and drinks. To my surprise, this HEB doesn’t have their famous guacamole, nor do they have their freshly made tortillas. I was disappointed to only find this strange brand name quac and mission tortilla. I would normally give this place 3 stars… but…
What brought my rating down to two stars was the customer service. Most other HEB’s have superb service, but this one felt like I was at Wal-​Mart. I asked where the guacamole was and the employee just pointed me in a general area and said by the meats. He then continued stocking the shelf. It wasn’t by the meats… it was by the sour cream!

I love this HEB.
It has all the basic things you need with out going overboard.
I can go here and actually stay with in my budget and buy only what is on my list. They don’t have a bunch of fancy specialty items like some of the bigger stores, but you can still do a full grocery shop here.
Great produce, meat selection and wine selection.
This store is small, effective and it works for me. I am not overwhelmed when I come here. It is close to my office so it is perfect for a quickie stop after work. The associates are always pleasant and will hook you up with extra coupons.

Small but effective. It’s a pantry store, it’s obviously very geared towards the Hispanic clientele; but the prices are low, selection isn’t bad, and it’s possible to get in and out in 5 minutes unlike most supermarkets. Though I’ll be the first to say a larger supermarket is definitely needed, it’s a neighborhood that’s on the rise, and in a year or two this size of store just won’t cut it.

The HEB on 18^th is probably the worst HEB in the history of HEBs. I love seedy dive bars, but seedy grocery stores? That’s different. Maybe seedy isn’t the word… we’re probably better off going with ‘straight up hood’.
I can almost guarantee that you will be approached by at least one person (maybe a whole family) upon entering AND exiting the store that would like for you to give them a dollar. Actually, I think five dollars was kindly requested of me… more shouted at me than kindly requested. I cannot guarantee whether or not these people will have homes or jobs, but my gut says neither.
So, that pretty much sets the stage for the rest of your experience at this lovely HEB. The aisles are terrible. You can’t fit two carts side by side and it makes navigating extremely difficult… in my case, it was even more difficult because there were some fairly inconsiderate people that refused to make any room to let me pass. The clientele is not good. Adding to my navigational woes was the random placement of items. It made no sense. The water was with the wine. I’m pretty sure the bread was with the cleaning supplies.
The bagging methodology was unlike any I had ever seen. I had a plastic bag for just about every item. That’s weird.
I couldn’t get out of there soon enough, and even when I tried to leave I had to wait for a family of eight to casually saunter behind my car… one at a time… all spaced out about 10 yards… all walking at varied rates of speed… I really should have a clever metaphor somehow comparing this to a video game, but alas, I have nothing.
Basically what I’m trying to tell you is don’t go here. You will feel unsafe if you are not armed. Stay vigilant, my friend!

For the love of the Heights, PLEASE put some corporate money into this terrible HEB! The store is tiny, the selection is mostly junk food (no vegetarian/​vegan-​friendly items), and the produce is always on the stale side. I will go here if I’m in a pinch for one or two crucial ingredients for dinner, but I don’t waste my time grocery shopping here. And if you’re looking for decent wine (i.e. anything beside Franzia and Cavot), don’t even bother — go to Roma liquors a few stores down, or to Kroger on 11^th.
I would be thrilled if HEB would invest in a remodel of this store, as I really like most other HEB stores.

I went in this HEB looking for a water bottle because my SIL told me she purchased a 74 ounce water bottle from a HEB. I walked around the whole store in 3 minutes and 34 seconds. Thats how small it is. I was not expecting that at all.
Needless to say they didnt have any water bottles and I wont be back to this location because it was a little «tacky»

I just moved to the Heights area close to 610 from Austin. I was use to walking to HEB and I lived in South Austin, so the neighborhood wasn’t the safest, but that HEB was great, stocked well and quite large. This one, not good.
The produce section is horrible — flies, molding vegetables and fruit, and the most limited selection i’ve ever seen. I’ve gotten better apple selection at a Valero than i did here. And they didn’t even have bananas… ridiculous.
Their meat section is unreal — horrible, small and disgusting. Not only that but there is no order to this store. HEB needs to come and either tear this place down from embarrassment or spend some money and fix it up… I’ll drive 15 miles out of my way to get groceries because this is a horrible store.

I recently moved to Timbergrove this summer. While Krogers is literally a few blocks away from my house, I ended up going to this particular HEB because my sister lived closer to this end of the neighborhood.
Walking in here reminded me of the 90’s when all those HEB Pantries popped up all over the suburbs. I almost forgot how SMALL grocery stores used to be «back in the day». Even though everyone is talking about how this place needs a makeover, I would be more inclined to insist that it stays just the way it is. For nostalgic purposes, that is. Just like the Krogers on 20^th circa 1986 (unless it’s closed down now… sniff)
While it didn’t have an organic natural section or steel cut oatmeal (among other staples in my grocery list), they did have more quantities of produce (not necessarily selection) for a Monday evening. Go to the Kroger on 11^th after work and they’re always out of something, be it cilantro or kale.
Most importantly, given its small size, its selection of wine and beer seem to be out of proportion compared to the rest of its inventory — there were more shelf space dedicated to booze!

Right around the corner from my friend’s place, it has become almost a ritual for us to get our liquor at Roma and then walk over here for mixers. HA!
There is always plenty of parking though I agree with a fellow Unilocaler that this location is dated. It needs a makeover. Bad. The store is so small too. But, if you put that aside, they do have a decent selection of produce and basic necessities. There is no fresh meat or deli section though :(They didn’t have cream soda other than in a can nor did they have bokchoy (the Chinese equivalence to cabbage).
When I went to buy beer they of course carded me. So, I pulled out my Georgia driver’s license and the lady looked at me and said, «I’m sorry but we don’t accept out-​of-​state IDs.» What the heck? Is this HEB policy? Or were they just giving me a hard time? Well, my friend had to log-​on to this online checking to be sure he had the money to cover me, all the while her line was backing up. I left dumbfounded. If I had wanted to, I could have just walked down the sidewalk to Roma’s Liquor and bought my friggen beer there. I have never had this problem anywhere else.
In all, this is where we go for things forgotten, mixers or muchie food.

I’ve always been partial to HEB, since going to their Foundation Camps in the Hill Country when I was a kid, and becoming enamored of their Central Market stores while going to school in Austin. This location, however, is the child left behind. With the extensive remodeling and superior selection of the Kroger on Shepherd, that is my go-​to store when I’m doing a full grocery run even though this HEB is literally down the street from my house.
This store is good for those quick essentials when you’re halfway through cooking a meal and you realize you forgot something at Kroger. The selection here is pretty paltry — they basically just have the major national brands and HEB’s own. So when it comes to chips, for example, it’s either Frito-​Lay or Hill Country Fare. Salsa? Pace or Central Market. Now, don’t get me wrong, Central Market salsa is actually really good, but you get what I mean.
I’d love to have the HEB that I otherwise know and love right down the street from me, but this location needs an overhaul.
