Houston Area Women’s Center

When I volunteered there I was stunned by the level of care the counselors and all volunteers had for their clients. It truly is a place that strives to empower women. Anyone looking to volunteer or donate should consider helping them. And of course anyone in need should not hesitate to seek the help they need.

Great place to visit. When I visited, they had several clothing options for women, and they also gave an amazing tour and provided lots of information about housing and the programs. Great organization!

What a fantastic organization! They provide a service that is unfortunately much needed in Houston, supporting women who are survivors of domestic & sexual violence, as well as their children.

The Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC) is a non-​profit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as providing prevention education to youth and the community.
HAWC’s services include domestic and sexual assault crisis hotlines (open 24 hr/​day, 713−528−2121 for domestic violence and 713−528−7273 for sexual assault), as well as anonymous shelter and counseling for victims of abuse. I volunteered for about a year and a half on HAWC’s hotlines, and ever since Hurricane Ike the number of people seeking HAWC’s services has increased triple or quadruple fold. This is partially because many of the shelters and other non-​profits on the Gulf Coast were closed after the hurricane.
HAWC also provides advocacy for victims, and education and training for the greater Houston community. If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual or domestic abuse, or if you just want to learn more about how to prevent such abuse, HAWC is an excellent place to turn to for help!
