This place is so cute to me! I found it passing by my gym and needed a meal before lifting. It wasn’t very busy and the staff were friendly. Decided to do dine in. There were only like 2 – 3 guests after the lunch rush so service was quick. I always order the same thing at every chinese spot to try them out and judge them: sweet and sour chicken. I got the lunch special with wonton soup, fried rice, egg roll and ordered fried wontons for appetizer. The wontons were good and their spicy mustard, which is a must have for me, excellent. The sweet and sour chicken was nice and the fried rice was ok. For the price about $ 8 it was decent. Great birthday lunch for sure. Most def would go back.

Absolutley the worst Chinese place I have ever eaten. My wife and I decided to try this place as it is the nearest Chinese restaurant in an area where we just moved. At 6:15PM, there were 3 other customers, which should have told us something. The place is fairly run down, with brooms in the corners. The waitress barely spoke English. My wife couldn’t understand her at all. I could(barely) because I had worked with native Chinese speakers for many years. We ordered fried dumplings for an appetizer, chicken fried rice and mongolian beef. After a fairly long wait, we got a very small portion of fried rice, and the mongolian beef was almost all onions — maybe 6 quarter size pieces of beef. The fried rice was completely tasteless. The dumplings we ordered for an appetizer didn’t show up until WELL after we finished our meal. The waitress kept going and sitting at a table with her tablet and ignoring the(few) customers. My wife finally went and asked the lady for our check — after we had been sitting finished for at least 5 minutes. I see why it was basically empty — we will never go back. It was awful ambience, awful food, and awful service.

Great selection of New York style Chinese food. It seems like they do a big takeout business. The dining area is elegant and tasteful! A great escape from the large chain restaurants.

My friend and I ate here at Hunan Hut last night. We decided on the Family Meal. As we were talking I said I wished it had the Spring Roll instead of Egg roll. It also had Fried Rice but no steamed White Rice. The waitress brought a large platter of Wild Rice and I asked if I could get some regular rice. She congenially brought it. Also the tall young man working there came over and said he overheard me wish for Spring Rolls and told me I could have it instead. Very friendly and accommodating. My friend had Fried Rice and I had steamed rice. My friend had Egg roll and I had Spring Roll though no choices were included with the Family Meal. I had Sha-Cha Shrimp and he had Sweet and Sour Pork both of which were delicious. We also had Won Ton Soup which was excellent! For dessert we tried the Dragon Pearls, an Asian Fruit which was unusual and refreshing. DEFINETLY recommend and give it a 4 – 5 star. Only problem was soup could have been hotter and they ran out of ribs. We had the Crab Puffs and they were wonderful. A great experience!

The only thing that was good here was the dumplings. Everything else was horrible. Skip this and go on to the next place.

My wife and I love this place for the location and quality of food. Their veggies are always crisp and fresh. They don’t go too heavy on their sauce and their food doesn’t seem overly greasy. It actually reheats really well and with their generous servings that is a good thing. Best place we have found to eat in this area when we don’t feel like cooking. Beef and broccoli and sweet and sour chicken our our favorites. Crab wontons and egg drop soup are also tasty too.

Prices were about $ 8 – 9 a plate, service was fine, but the food was bland. Rice, and lo mein tasted like nothing. The fried noodles were the best thing and they were a snack.

The chicken with garlic sauce is definitely worth a try, I order it everytime when I don’t feel like cooking and when I have friends over at my place. Another signature dish that i would recommend is the general tso’s chicken! The flavor is just right with no overwhelming grease and did i mention that they dont use msg? Excellent healthy selection of other dishes as well. The service is also very nice, always greeted with warm greeting and walk out with a belly full of good stuff! These guys know my name and always remember i want light sauce on my orders ! Strongly recommend this place to everyone who likes healthy and delicious food! :)

I went to dinner with partner last night. He and I enjoyed the décor of restaurant. This restaurant had my favorite soup before my main course which is Egg Drop soup with noodle crackers(I’m not clear on name), and it was one of the best in a long time for my first visit to this restaurant. He had the Sweet and Sour Chicken. I had the Kung Pao Chicken. The flavor of Kung Pao was mildly hot. I like that it was not over powerfully hot, but it had just enough kick to hit my taste bud. The food was great. My only complaint of the restaurant was the young waitress. I felt she did not want to be there, and she sat us rudely. She served us rudely. I tried to be extra nice to her to make her feel good, and she was not receiving us with our politeness. At the end of meal, we had the older owner or waitress come over. She was very nice and receiving. I will come back again to give restaurant another try for service. I sometimes thing first time is not always the best impression, but I will give a second chance. I will try again. Again, food was great! A!

My coworkers and I wanted to order Chinese food so I recommended this restaurant. We placed 9 lunch orders. Each lunch order comes with a soup. When one of the girls opened her soup she saw a small roach on her lid. I tried posting a picture but the site does not allow me. The staff is very nice but I don’t like the fact that there’s rodents crawling on almost EVERYTHING in the kitchen at night.

Ok, I am just going to admit it: sometimes I just want some cashew chicken. Yes, I realize it’s not fresh off the boat cuisine. Yes, I know one meal’s fat content rivals my daily allowed dose. But I don’t really care and you shouldn’t either. This place is exactly what I need when I get the aforementioned craving. They don’t use MSG; they use only white meat chicken; and there is no puddle of oil leftover when I clean my plate. So I get a delicious Chinese food experience in the middle of southwest Houston without feeling gross afterwards. I have been here more than a couple times over the past few years and I have always left happy and full of noodle/rice/egg roll. I am a big fan of their lunch menu, which is priced around $ 5.50 and includes a heap of rice, choice of soup(hot and sour or egg drop) and an egg roll. And these egg rolls are legit. Not those half full ones or the very thin and dinky ones you get elsewhere. They are filled to the brim with a flavorful blend of goodness. They’re soft on the inside and crispy golden on the outside. My personal favorite is the pepper steak which is just great here. My only complaint is that they charge you extra if you want steamed rice or won ton soup. Lame. I mean, how hard is it to give me some noodles in my soup? Or steam some rice? Also, their chow mein doesn’t come with the egg roll or the rice. In terms of dinner, I only go Moo Shu chicken. There is something about that hoison sauce and those light pancakes that really gets me. And it’s hard to be satisfied when you get do-it-yourself things in other places but I have literally had to take some home with me before. And trust me, I’m a good eater. I have tried the dessert here and it’s okay. I wouldn’t have it again. Otherwise, the fast service the three tiered terrace-esque seating has me coming back for more. That little Belden’s plaza strip has seen tons of businesses come and go(in fact, it’s kind of notorious), but this place has stayed put since 1989 and I’m glad.

There’s sometimes a thin blurred line between authentic and Americanized Chinese food. I would consider«Kung Pao Chicken» and«Orange Chicken» to be Americanized, although these do stem from authentic Chinese dishes but just twisted in certain areas and re-named. I admit, I am Chinese and spend most of my time(i.e. family dinners) in Chinatown, but sometimes you just need that greasy chunky Americanized Asian food. I usually give those places a solid 2 stars. However, with Hunan Hut, it seems to be a little more authentic. Their food isn’t overly greasy, they don’t use MSG(which they definitely make clear enough with the big«NOMSG» sign in the front, unless they’re saying to not leave any messages.?), and the food tastes homemade and rather fresh. They put a rather good amount of meat in their dishes(e.g. fried rice), and it’s pretty flavorful without feeling like you’re drinking the Red Sea of soysauce. Overall, pretty quiet environment but cozy. A tad expensive in my opinion if you come for dinner, but they have good lunch specials for decent food.

Summary: average food, high prices. We’ve lived in the area about 10 years and have hit this place every few months. It used to be a hidden gem: good food at good prices. We came in today and saw they have a new menu, and all of the dinner prices have gone way up($ 10 for sweet and sour chicken). The lunch prices are still affordable($ 5 – 6). The food tastes now seem about average instead of slightly above avg. Good points on the food though: chicken is all white meats, and no MSG.

I am daydreaming about these spring rolls, I really am. I cannot tell you precisely what set them apart from others… was it the delicately fried shell? Was it the somehow extra delicious, more than the sum of its parts filling? I don’t know, but I didn’t regret for a second delving into the realm of fried foods again– normally health food nut me tries to avoid them, but 2 little spring rolls was NOT enough. They were gone too quickly! Ahem. We’ve make the rounds in Chinatown and look for the authentic, or as near as I can get and eat vegetarian. But this is the Chinese food I grew up with, and there are a lot of veg/vegan options on the menu! From scallion pancakes to veggie dumplings, to lo mein and fried rice and garlic eggplant, Hunan Hut has me covered. I tried the garlic eggplant this time and it was gooooooood. Stirred in white rice… even better. It was flavorful and the eggplant was well prepared. I do wish there had been something else in it but eggplant and sauce, but I guess that’s where rice comes in. And the portion could have lasted me 3 meals if I hadn’t let it sit out for too long the next day. Nice that this long running establishment is nearby. Sure, I wish they delivered, but when I crave Americanized takeout Chinese near my house, I’ll make the trip. Actually, it’s probably for the best that they don’t deliver. One can’t have spring rolls every day, right?(p.s. no MSG, if you care!)

OK, so. Sometimes highly Americanized Chinese food tastes really good. Let’s face it. If it didn’t, places like Panda Express wouldn’t exist. The problem is, places like Panda Express are disgusting(sorry to anyone who works there, the food is grim). And so some of us get this idea in our head that the only way to have good Chinese food is to find non-Americanized places and«authentic» becomes the red herring holy grail. Well. Hunan Hut is here to remind you that there is some very, very tasty, well made, carefully prepared, not greasy, not MSG laden Americanized Chinese food out there. I ordered the noodles Hunan style which is basically lo mein(soft egg noodles) with beef, chicken and shrimp, lots of veggies and their house«Hunan sauce»(a variety of brown sauce) which has a hint of spice to it. It was delicious in every way. Liz’s veggie egg rolls were so good, she never even offered me a bite. Their dining room is gorgeous. We got take-out last night, and I actually regretted it when I arrived to pick up, because the room looked so cozy. My only gripe is that they don’t deliver, even to a small radius, but this food is so good, I don’t mind the short drive to pick it up.
