Went here today and alot of things have changed. But, change is good. The prices are up a little. But, the food is really good. The service is superb.

This is my favorite James Coney Island. I grew up knowing only this location. I’ve been to several in Houston but none can compare to the level of awesome customer service here. There are a few people that have been working here for years and they’ve been the same friendly and engaged employees for all of those years. Whether I go through the drive-thru or inside, they take good care of me. Even when I don’t go for years, they recognize me and offer excellent service. They definitely keep the place neat and clean too. I will admit that the food can be hit or miss with them. There has been several times that I was so dissatisfied that I vowed never to return. But, when they’re good, they’re GOOD. The pricing is horrible too. Way too much for hot dogs. Overall, I’m drawn to this place because it’s a childhood memory & it’s pretty delicious if you catch them on a good day.

Great food! Friendly staff and classic styling. If you’re looking for a quick stop before heading out of town this is it. Why don’t they let the rest of Texas get these?

Went to James Coney Island because I was craving a good dog. James was up to the challenge. It not at the same time. I ordered a plain Coney Island dog that was awful the dog itself was heavily seasoned with coriander that was so out of balance. However I ordered the Baja dog that was sublimely beefy In flavor and tasted the way a hot dog should the staff was friendly but overwhelmed. I give them props for keeping their cool during a stressful time.

I take coneys seriously… seriously!!! Tulsa, where I grew up, is a coney lover’s paradise, with a pletheroa of great coney stands, all with home made chili and great fixings… so, if there is such a thing as a coney snob… that just might be me. Having not seen a coney island stand of recent, did a drive by last night to check this place out while working in Houston… and all I can say is YUK!!! Microwaved buns had consistency of shoe leather, cheez whiz rather than a quality grated cheese, and some soupy chopped onion paste mess that was nasty. Now I know… and it only cost me $ 3!!!

Service is great and the drive thru is very fast. The food is great and they have a wide variety of hot dogs. As soon as you walk in you stand in line to give your order and it is ready in 5 minutes. Even if it is very packed you still get your food very fast because the service is great. This is one of the best places in houston to get hot dogs.

Very tasty dogs and frito pie, a little pricy.

I feel a tad silly writing a review of a fast food place. That being said, I have never been to a James Coney Island establishment so it was new to me and therefore fair game. Impulsively I got off 45 at a random exit when things stopped dead because of a stalled car on down the way(according to the flashy –flashy sign). Disoriented and annoyed with the GPS lady who was taking her time to mispronounce the next turn, I spotted some balloons and a sign for 86 cent coney dogs. Yes, that does sound more attractive than continuing in this infinite loop of u-turns. I had the coney, fries, and a frozen lemonade. The chili sauce had a slightly odd flavor at first, almost curry like. I must have gotten used to it or maybe there were more onions in subsequent bites because I didn’t notice it as the dog disappeared. The fries were really good. They tasted like ore-ida’s out the bag(ala school cafeteria) which to me is a very good thing. I like most fries and appreciate the subtle nuances of them all. Usually fast food places have skinnier ones because they cook more quickly. Everything was pretty good, and of course, an unbeatable deal.

Being an old fart and a old time Houstonian(finally got the hell out, not missing the humidity at all — just miss the food), I have been eating at James’ Coney Island for over 35 years and whenever I return to Houston, my first stop is at James’ Coney Island. I have not gotten used to all the various hot dogs, polish dogs, kielbasas and such and tend to stick with the standard that I have been eating there. What I normally, well actually, always order is two coneys all the way(chili, cheese and onions), a bowl of chili and a drink. The flavor is unique and nothing like a Nathan’s or Flookie’s hot dog. It is an orignal and not to be duplicated. I love the basic hot dog fare here and will continue to stop in whenever I am in Houston.

Don’t know why they have ‘Coney Island’ in their name but I don’t care. You want the best chili, fake cheese and super small diced onions dog on the planet and don’t care that it’ll take a month off your life? This is your place. I won’t compare it to any NY dog I’ve had in NYC/Brooklyn because you can’t compare the two, totally different but I have never had a better chili/cheese and onion dog to date.

I love me some hotdogs, I love it even more when it is a drive through. DIdn’t know it was a chain restaurant and still pleased. Tried the jalapeño dog, NY style with saurkrat and mustard. The J dog was tasty, had some bite to it. The original had a something little extra, some chili sauce on top of it, which I like, made it messy but still enjoyed it. Two for $ 5, was pleased with the dogs and the prices.
