A friend of mine completed proton therapy a few months ago and had to come back for his 6 month follow up. I dropped him off for some appointments and when I came back to pick him up, I was told to come in and take a look around. As a regular volunteer at MD Anderson in the main building, I’ve always been intrigued by the proton center and the technology used for cancer research on this side of campus. My friend was adamant about showing me the facility and giving me a «quick tour» of the place he spent a significant few weeks and made lifelong friends. He couldn’t say enough about the staff that welcomed him from across the country and how they professionally and personally helped him through his treatment. Upon walking in, I was greeted kindly by everyone and led downstairs to the reception/waiting area. There’s a large winding staircase and origami crane fixture adorning the atrium. One of his nurses, Courtney, was waiting at the entry to the treatment area and took us back to gave me a brief glimpse at the room and equipment. She explained how proton therapy works and what makes this treatment so unique. They were fairly busy, or so it appeared, so the tour was only a few minutes. She wanted to make sure they weren’t running behind and interfering with other appointments. I just thought it was so nice of her to take those few minutes(that she could have taken for herself) to do something like that. The technology is revolutionary, and you can tell this place is truly making a difference is peoples’ lives. My friend sang all the praises for Courtney, and I happened to agree that she was wonderful. He also said his favorite receptionist offered to fax, copy, and scan things for him almost daily when undergoing therapy in order to maintain his business back home. It took some of the stress off of him as he focused on getting healthier. If all of the staff at MD Anderson is as amazing, it’s no wonder this is the #1 cancer center in the world! Love this place, and I can’t say enough about it.
