Obsidian Theater

Saw two musicals at the Heights. Acting was okay albeit a little underdeveloped like it hasn’t reached full maturity. To be fair, the actors look really young (18 – 24). Props were meh (it’s a rinky dinky theater). But the signing was amazing! Though it’s a little hard to understand the lyrics (even though they had mics) and the band was too loud sometimes (but I’ll give them kudos for even having a band). It’s a really really small theater. I mean, I was so close that I could see the acne on an actress! Really the saving grace of this theater is the amazing singing talent.

Watched «The Importance of Eating Earnest» by Cone Man Running Productions. It’s a hilarious British zombie comedy. My husband and I liked it so much that we came back the same week for their «Give/​Take» play! They offer a $ 5 discount for repeat visitors.
Personally, I enjoyed the first show better, but that’s just me. I prefer lighter comedy and this one had me laughing out loud! It was original, lively (even zombies), and thoroughly entertaining!
Overall, the actors were wonderful in both productions. The setting is intimate without a bad seat in the house. They serve beer, wine, and non-​alcoholic beverages by donation before the show and during intermission.
I would highly recommend checking out this local gem and supporting the program!

Fantastic lil hidden local theater w/​great performers! So fun! I’m in intermission for assassins right now & I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it so far! :)

I attended the production of Assassins here. SRO did an amazing job. The entire cast was phenomenonal. The theater itself was comfortable. This was the best local theater performance I’ve attended in Houston. I’m looking forward to future productions.

I love the fact that this is a small theater with such good shows! I saw Next to Normal last week and was impressed that such a small house can put on something of this caliber.
The space itself is very small and basic — no frills. A little disorganized and took way too long for them to seat our party of two, but it worked out. The people are super friendly and I can’t wait to come back!

I’ve now caught 4 productions at Obsidian Art Space and always appreciate the intimate atmosphere and the quality of the productions. I would recommend this venue as a night out for anyone in the Houston area regardless of what is showing, you are sure to enjoy yourself.

We came here with little to no expectations and left with a great experience! ⁸⁄₁₀ of the shorts were hilarious and entertaining, will definitely come to the next show!

Really cool space where you can see some interesting stuff/​performances.
We saw the top 8 skits out of 100 that were interred in a contest to show at this place. Contest was to show off playwriting skills as well as acting skills. All skits were required to be located in a motel bedroom, this way set design didn’t have to change between each skit.
Came across some really good ones and some good actors.
I would defiantly check it out! You can find some creative stuff that’s different.

Boobs, Aliens, Gay Porn, Alcohol, Long Black Objects flying at your face, sound like a hell of a Thursday night?
Well the current show Motel Tropicana delivers all of that and then some.
I have Unilocal Events to thank for telling me about not only this production but this venue. The production concept is interesting. They give an idea, this one being a seedy motel room and allow screenwriters to come up with the best plot with no restrictions. Then they take them and pick the best that are to be displayed.
The venue space is small and intimate. Small room with seating on 3 sides. Has about 8 seats on each row and about 5 rows deep. I love these type of theaters because you are so close to the actors. You come here for real local theater. It’s more dialogue based, no fancy lighting or special effects.
I like that because it leaves stuff to the imagination.
One of my favorite shows in Houston, and hurry before this show ends, even if it does, hopefully this venue stays open, producing continuous hit productions!
