I’ve been frequenting Ruthie’s for a little less than two years now, and have learned to love it for exactly what it is. Ruthie’s is as divey as it gets, but at the same time, it remains to be a sanctuary. I wouldn’t describe it as a «hipster» place per say, but more of a place for the«ghosts of hipsters past». As for the patrons of Ruthie’s, on any given night 75% of them are regulars(weekly or more), 20% are semi-regulars, and 5% are first timers. Most everyone seems to be an acquaintance of each other. Everything is cash only, but they conveniently have an ATM on site. Usually the bar is manned by Hebah Tues.-Sat., who will be the sweetest, kindest person if you play your cards right(just don’t be a jerk). On Sundays and Mondays, if they’re open, you will find sweet 80 something year old Ruthie herself bar tending. She’s nearly deaf so you literally have to YELL your drink order, but she’s fairly quick and reads lips pretty well. There are a couple of TV’s, 4 or 5 «slot machines», a single pool table(that only costs 75CENTS!), and an outdoor patio area. Most importantly though, the bathrooms are always clean, and the jukebox is kick ass. They only serve beer, box wine, and set ups if you BYOB. On draft is Shiner, XX, and Lonestar. I’m not sure what and all they have in the can or bottle; usually when I’m there I get a $ 7 pitcher of Lonestar and call it a night. Sometimes tamale guys will come in and sell you a dozen for like $ 6. Always awesome. Or sometimes Hebah will have just bought pizza for everyone for some random and obscure reason(no complaints here!). All in all, if you’re looking for a laid back place to have a couple beers and shoot some pool, Ruthie’s is your place. If you’re looking for something fancy, or trying to pick up chicks, keep walking.
