Came here for brunch with a group of friends. We made reservations ahead of time so we would haven’t to deal with a wait. I used to see Shade at the downtown farmer’s market where I loved getting their tostadas. Based on that, I ended up ordering the tostadas and a chocolate croissant. The chocolate croissant was very flakey as a good croissant should be. Definitely a pastry winner for me. My disappointment came with the tostada. I wasn’t very impressed with it, and it definitely didn’t live up to the ones I use to get at the farmer’s market. My husband’s shrimp and grits were excellent though and full of flavor. I would recommend that. One of our friends also had a problem with his eggs on his Eggs Benedict being too over cooked, so he had to send it back. Non-runny eggs are a no go for me as well if I had received that dish.

The overall dining experience at Shade was mediocre. While our waiter Racheal(?) was pleasant… The food was just okay. Got a cup of the bacon/chicken soup. It was not good at all. Rice was undercooked and honestly I’ve had better soup from a can. The cheese plate was okay but it’s a cheese plate. The tuna tartar was good and my friend ordered the sweet potato curry soup and that was good. The mussels were tasteless. Cute atmosphere but can’t say I’ll be back to Shade.

One of my favorite restaurants in Houston! I just found out they will close for 10 days in Feb. 2016 for renovation so they will be even better after they reopen. Great for lunch, brunch, or dinner. A must eat at restaurant. Chicken and waffles are exceptional as well as the Shrimp and Grits but, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Our waitress, Rachel, was super helpful after I ordered a dish I couldn’t eat for dietary reasons. D’oh! How embarrassing! She took the time to talk to chef, and he came out to talk with me about what I can and can’t have, made an off menu suggestion, and executed it beautifully. They were both so accommodating and kind that I would recommend this place based on the service level alone, but the food was also amazing. My date had the tortilla soup and the rabbit and said each was cooked perfectly. Other bonus points: 1. Bottles of wine are half off on Wednesday. 2. They are remodeling soon. 3. After the remodel they will have an updated menu. Thanks again to the staff for being so gracious!

Opened up the palette with a London Spring, a gin based cocktail that was accented by a citrus flavor and adorned with a hint of lemon. Moved onto a trio of appetizers: the Gruyère Mac and cheese, fried quail, and sautéed shrimp. Although I did not partake in the Mac and cheese, my friend loved it and would have been content to just eat that for dinner. The quail appetizer was outstanding as it had a waffle base with hints of blue cheese and walnuts, serving as a base for a couple of scrumptious quail wings accompanied by a sweet fig sauce. The sautéed shrimp was served atop grits and sautéed in a very tasty dark sauce. My main course was the rabbit pappardelle which consisted of a tortellini pasta mixed in with a generous Serving of rabbit meat, mixed in. Great atmosphere, very attentive staff, and even better food.

«Hot Damn!» I must be dreaming… Where is the million stars option? Shade organized a «tasting dinner» for my birthday. What I didn’t expect was the personalized menu with all of my favorites. The service was supreme; even the chef came out to greet us. Shade is delicious, civilalized, friendly and one of the few left that doesn’t include surround sound television screens. Unpretentious, you will want to applaud the quality, service and menu options. Vegetarian, Vegan they will magically make it happen. The prices are fair for the high quality food choices. Stand back, enjoy, fall back into the Shade.

I’ve never been here before nor have I ever knew about it until now. My boyfriend and I were looking up places for lunch and he told me we should go try this place out. I had other places in mind, but decided to be open-minded and try this place out. Parking is a bit scarce, but there is a neighborhood nearby that you can park at along the streets. We were lucky, and were able to find a parking space right in front of the restaurant. There was no wait when we got inside and the host seated us immediately. Our server was very attentive and friendly. He gave us great recommendations and was very knowledgeable. SHRIMP&CRABCAMPECHANA This dish was very acidic because of the diced tomatoes and the tomato juice. The plantain chips were very unique and were nice and thin. The shrimp and crab added some meatiness and the avocados provided some creaminess. There were also olives, but I didn’t eat any. This dish was a little bit more on the acidic side although it was good and fresh but, it isn’t good enough for me to order again. SEAREDREDFISH– jumbo lump crab, marinated artichokes, pontchartrain sauce, white rice, and grilled asparagus I can’t even begin to start where this dish went so amazing and great! I absolutely love it! If I could, I would’ve ordered the same dish after i finished the first one and took another one home to go. The rice was cooked perfectly, not too soggy, but not too hard and dry. The crab and redfish were so moist and flavorful and the sauce was divine! It was sweet and savory and the asparagus was so crispy and seasoned well. I’ll be coming back. Service was so friendly and food was so excellent! I’m so glad I tried this place out. I’ll definitely be coming here again for sure!

We stopped in for a break from Christmas shopping on 19th. It was a quiet Saturday afternoon. The restaurant was empty, and a few folks were at the bar enjoying HAPPY hour. Yes HH7 days a week! There are food and drink specials to appeal to everyone in your crowd. We were able to try the wine options before making a choice which was nice. As a snack we had the cornbread oysters served on mixed greens. They were delicious! I can see getting a craving for those. I have been to Shade for brunch and dinner on special occasions. But their happy hour makes it a viable option on any random day to sit back, relax and enjoy some tasty food and drink.

Now I know for a fact my husband and I are quite fussy in regard to food. My Neighbour recommended this place but we were not sure about trying it. Well we caved and went for date night and we absolutely loved it. The food, service and drinks were amazing. I got a raspberry peach Bellini cocktail, the spicy Thai soup, seared salmon for my entrée and the poached peach with ice cream and a lava cake(not sure of the exact name). My husband got the cheese plate, the scallops and the coconut crème pie. I would highly recommend every single thing we ate. Everyone should definitely try this place.

This place is excellent for brunch. Great service! I had the shrimp and grits and a Bloody Mary and both were delicious. I’m not sure why this place doesn’t have a better rating!

I’m actually being nice with 2 *‘s… I gave it the extra star for our server Christopher and the glass of Pinot noir. All I can say is they should change the name from Shade to Bland! I’ve never had to season my food more in my life. They tried to pass off fettuccine for tagliatelle… Which was overcooked. Please don’t dumb down the food… Houston is a foodie town now. We know better.

If you can make it past the«do you have a reservation?»(With a half empty restaurant) Be aware. You may just want to have a drink here. Great location. Not so great food. Both of our dinners weren’t very tasty and the pasta was over cooked.

I wanted to try a different brunch spot, and Shade was perfect. The hibiscus mint tea was a little tart but with some honey it was great. I ordered the chicken and waffles, and it was a lot of food. It came with two eggs, two slices of bacon, a fruit cup, two fried pieces of chicken, and a waffle. The chicken was fried a little hard needed a tad more seasoning but was really good. I can’t wait to go back to try the recommended burger.

Nestled on the busy drag of Nineteenth street, Shade is the newest addition on my «unsuspecting gems in the heights» list. No frills– Shade’s location and menu provide enough incentive for a heights resident or visitor to take a try. We finally made a trip to the restaurant this past weekend and were not disappointed; we thought we were quite lucky to snag a reservation(on late notice) for a typically prime hour in the restaurant biz — 8:30pm Saturday night, but we were surprised to find upon arrival that there was nobody there!!! All the heights residents were probably too busy guzzling down coffee at the neighbouring Andidote or Boomtown, talking of their plans of one day visiting wild Bolivia or starting a bakery! We started off with a Tomato Salad with some type of cheese, vinaigrette, and sunflower seeds – surprisingly great. And complimenting that appetizer was an order of Fried Quail — served with waffle and fruit jelly, this was by far the highlight of the meal. Incredible. I had the the Braised Lamb Shank furnished with eggplant purée, and potatoes. The dish was served with a nice curry sauce which blended everything together well. My girlfriend had the scallop dish which she claims was«light and great and delightful». Looked good from my seat. Topped everything off with a split crème brûlée and coffee. The meal was great, service perfect. Will repeat some day soon.

If I’m breathing and mobile, my family is going to Shade for Sunday brunch. Every Sunday. And we take our dog, who is treated like royalty(just as the staff treats the humans). We sit in the outdoor area, where our pup is brought a bowl of water and the occasional sneaked slice of bacon. The menu is slightly different every week, and it’s consistently excellent. The omelet is among my favorites, and the fillings vary — one week it might be asparagus, another week artichokes, sometimes both, sometimes an entirely different filling. Always excellent. The shrimp and grits are homey, wonderful comfort food, as is the chicken and waffle dish. I’m no food critic — I just know what I like. And I love this place. Service? Rachel and Gus — wonderful people and warm, inviting and attentive staff. In the few times we’ve had other wait staff, though, they were awesome as well. This is my favorite Houston restaurant.

I’m just going to confess that I am not a fan of Houston Restaurant Week(Month). The handful of times that I’ve gone, the experience has been mediocre. I end up spending around $ 50 and wishing I had either ordered off the menu or gone somewhere else. The quality of the food and service declines during the month of August. I got the beet salad, duck confit, and I can’t even remember what dessert I ordered because by then my taste buds had lost interest. Each course was worse than the previous. The duck was so incredibly salty that it was borderline inedible. On top of the not-so-great food, our waiter was unenthusiastic and inattentive. The overall experience, coupled with the taste, will have me not returning ever again.

Went back for Happy hour. The appletinis were nice, the margaritas were nasty. Oysters were fishy tasting and chewy. The fried okra and Mac and cheese were nice. Two of the three sliders were fatty and gristly. The sweet potatoe chips were good. Service was nice. Except after the first appetizer, they took everything like silverware and napkins away. I was like«ummm. We only had one appetizer. We are planning to have more.» Waiter apologizes. But food too inconsistent to go back here.

Food was very good. Service was very bad. You would think that a place that charges around $ 30 a plate would be able to afford good help. Our waiter could barely speak English and ignored us half the time. I had the fried seafood special and I really liked their batter. The atmosphere is nice. They play 50’s music. They also make some nice original drinks.

Came here for HH after work on a Friday and I absolutely fell in love! The atmosphere is modern and classy; all the tables are already set up with wine glasses per chair. HH drinks: $ 5 wine and wells, $ 7 martinis I’ll just list what I enjoyed from best to still-good: Lamb sliders(5⁄5) — kinda tastes like steak! Hummus(5⁄5) — comes with plantain chips Pulled Pork Empanadas(4⁄5) Parmesan Frites(4⁄5) Fried Asparagus(4⁄5) Service is top-notch as well. The waiter checked up on us frequently to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. I’d love to come back and try their full menu.
