Barrel tasting on Super Bowl Sunday? Heck ya. Thank you Ben for an informative and fun time. The winery treats drop in customers great but as wine club members, the barrel testing was just one of many cool experiences we get like the holiday party and meeting the wine maker. We like every wine here, but the Gov Fauquier is super fragrant, Shirley chardonnay has the buttery malolactic fermentation we love, and the whiskey barrel aged port has a banana bread aroma perfect for a Winter day. If you like this winery, try Fox Meadow which also uses great French oak that imparts a subtle flavor and smoke. Also Desert Rose

Got a Living Social deal and came out for the 1 hour tour. The booking system they use is extremely easy. Managed to review availability and make my reservation online. The tour itself is interesting and great for first timers. I’ve been on a few winery tours now so alot of the information provided I had heard before but they gave us some fun facts specific to the winery and Virginia wine heritage. Tour guide had great energy and seemed knowledgeable. Wine tasting took place upstairs. That was also good. I would recommend they use a spout for the wines though. Pourings were inconsistent quantities between glasses and there was alot of spillage from the bottle(alcohol abuse lol!). I wasn’t a huge fan of the wines but we found 2 white wines that were decent. Voignier & Governor Fauquier. The deal included a picnic basket with blanket for use. We also got crackers, Cabot cheddar cheese, 2 individually wrapped Dove chocolates. There was an issue with the summer sausage so we got extra cheese. No biggie. The grounds are pretty well kept but this is a smaller winery with only a couple of outdoor picnic tables/benches so be aware. All in all, friendly folks, nice winery. But for us it was a one time visit kind of a place. Bonus: they had free cookies & mulled wine

O tour é curto e degusta-se 10 rótulos. Eles permitem trazer comida, pq não servem. Cachorros são permitidos na área externa. Bom lugar pra um piquenique!

Went on a Wednesday afternoon as part of a team building activity for work. Luckily, we were the only group there, which was good because inside feels small even though there’s an upstairs(when you first enter) and a downstairs(where the tastings occur). Even though our group arrived late for our tasting, the staff at the location didn’t seem ready for our arrival, and we waited quite a bit for them to get the wines ready. First we had a few whites, then reds. I enjoyed the first wine, a Viognier — but not so much the rest(I’m not a huge fan of reds). The winery has a nice covered outdoor area with picnic benches, and we were able to bring our own food and snacks to enjoy after the tastings. Gorgeous scenery all around!

Beautiful drive to this winery. I did a tasting with a charming young man from Binghamton, NY(sorry I didn’t get his name). The wine was very good. Loved the Falconwood, a blend of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Lovely. Had a great time. Would definitely return.

Not the best. The wine especially red’s weren’t great and definitely overpriced! We used a deal so I didn’t feel as bad because we paid less but definitely don’t spend 30 bucks on their picnic basket! It’s one cheese one meat and a dove chocolate(both packaged that I can buy at a grocery store by the way). Check out the other wineries nearby if you’re looking for better quality food/wine but this place is beautiful with nice people and live music so for atmosphere I bump it up!

I went to Philip Carter on 8÷1÷15 on my annual wine trip to the area. I had notified the winery ahead of time that I would be bringing a group of 10. I was pleasantly surprised when we showed up that they had set up a separate table for us with glasses we got to keep. It was more surprising because based on my last email from the winery I thought that nothing was being done(regarding a separate tasting). I also like the grounds at Phil Carter. My group sat down at their beautiful grounds to enjoy a potluck lunch. The guitar player outside in the background was nice. In a nutshell the tasting experience was very professional and the grounds are beautiful making this place easy to recommend.

Horrible customer service! Please take your business elsewhere! The wine and sangria is mediocre!

We pass by the winery often on vineyard trips. I was disappointed when I told the staff I held the VA wine pass, which includes free tastings. It’s usually a nice discount to the other items we buy. We proceeded to taste, then found out at the register that they had just changed the policy, and I now owed them about $ 17. I was unaware of the change; they should have mentioned this to us upfront when we showed the card. The girl at the register didn’t seem to care, but we didn’t fight it and paid. Be careful of their new policy!

We had a good time trying out the wines. it would have been better if it wasn’t raining since our tour was all indoors. We were told the regular tour includes walking through the grape fields. Our favorite was the Governor and we bought a bottle to go.

I bought a Unilocal deal for 2 for a wine education course, tasting, and picnic basket and was thoroughly impressed! While the first part of the wine tour was started out a little slow, and we didn’t really learn anything that we didn’t already know, the tasting was great! The pours were extremely generous, we were able to taste wines that had just been released that day, and also a few wines that were not offered to the public as part of their tasting, just to club members. One of the most interesting parts of the tasting was comparing the 2013 rose to the 2014 rose, and seeing the differences in taste just from the fermentation process. It was a fun experience and is great for a date or get together with friends! I recommend the Unilocal or groupon deal!

We stayed at the Inn at Vineyards crossing which is also owned by the winery owners and came here as an extension of our stay. If I could I’d give the wine a 3.5 but the customer service a 5. Jake was our tour guide and he was very informative and friendly. He also went out of his way to grab a tasting of a wine that was only available to select customers. The wine is just ok… wasn’t a fan of the Cab franc or the rose. The nest tasting wine there is the Governor Fauquier and the port if you can get your hands on a bottle. The picnic basket filled with goodies that comes along with the tour was a nice touch!

We really enjoy the wines here and have been members now for over a year. The Viognier is one my all time favorite white wines. As members we enjoy free wine tastings and a glass of wine when we visit and a discount on our wine purchases. Membership is free, just have to purchases 2 bottles bimonthly. There is often events on the weekends. Picnic and tour packages available — tour we went on recently was ok but again, great wines. Beautiful location, perfect for relaxing with your glass of wine. Not inexpensive bottles, range from $ 24 — $ 40.

I wasn’t a big fan of the wine at all, but the tour was so much fun. The tour guide was spunky and full of energy. It’s well worth the visit. And I usually only drink red wine, but we bought a bottle of white and had a little picnic outside. The highlight of the tasting for me was the port — it was delicious! I bought a bottle and am saving it for a special occasion. I also enjoyed touring the room filled with barrels, and would really like to attend a barrel tasting some day. It sounds like the winemaker is very knowledgable, and this is likely a ridiculously fun event!

Drove 1hr and 30mins out to find a locked gate. No email, call or response. While we waited another couple waiting with the rest of us let us know that they closed due to inclement weather conditions via Twitter. I reached out hoping to at least reschedule on Sunday, February 15th. I have yet to hear back. A simple email would have sufficed. Disappointed.

A great winery in Hume, Virginia is Philip Carter Winery, a winery proud of their historical roots in Virginia winemaking. The winery offers tours, wine tastings, a good selection of cheeses, bread and sausages, as well as indoor and outdoor tables for picnics. While this venue looks unassuming, their wines are high quality wines, with an obvious expert winemaker working the wine chemistry. Read more at

Came here Saturday with my good friend to pick up her wine club spoils, and we had a BLAST. Since we happened to come the day of an event, we not only got to stay for said event($ 49 for 2 other local wines plus the ceremony, live entertainment, and a pig roast + salad and other sundries– a bit steep but it seemed like a cool opportunity in which to partake and I am really glad we stayed) but we also got to do our(free) tasting in the VIP room upstairs! Our server was Liz, and she had tons of energy. The pours were generous, and the wines were phenomenal. My favorite was the Governer’s(white) — sweet but not too sweet. One of my favorite things about Philip Carter is all the gorgeous art they have scattered around the walls! All wine-themed of course. The event itself was grand– we really enjoyed tasting other local wines(Mediterranean Cellars was represented, as well as Desert Rose and Molon Lave) and the pig roast was delicious as well. I will definitely be coming back here again soon– and may look into their wine club as well! Because let’s face it: you can never belong to enough wine clubs ;)

We had such a great afternoon at Philip Carter Winery after purchasing the tour/picnic/tasting deal from Groupon(which we should have purchased from Unilocal since it’s $ 2 cheaper). Amanda was our tour guide and she was so nice. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. We had such a great time learning about and tasting the wines with our group after seeing the behind-the-scenes tour. The private tasting room upstairs that we got to go to was so beautiful. Philip Carter Winery has lots of great reds and is perfect for you if you’re not a huge fan of sweet wines. They also have a yummy, buttery chardonnay and a rose made from merlot grapes. The picnic at the end of the day was so perfect. We picked our own spot among the vines and started to unpack our picnic basket that they provided us. Inside was a flannel blanket, two plates, two wine glasses, two chocolates, a sleeve of Ritz crackers, mango chutney and a cutting board. In addition, we were able to pick a salami/cheese combination or 2 cheeses. We opted for the salami and cheese and enjoyed both choices immensely! Thank you for such a wonderful day, Philip Carter!

PC is one of the oldest most respected wineries, and they uphold their reputation well. If you sign up for a tour and picnic, they take you on a a quaint but informative tour, have you come in for a tasting, and then give you a cheese/meat basket(blanket if its cold) and some excellent wines. Some are pricey, but worth it. They do have a wine club, but its a good $ 400/year or so but they send two bottles every other month and there are some events and private parties they will invite you to. Overall, a quality winery and an experience worth the drive.

Great tasting provided by Amanda, Chardonnay was my favorite. They offer cheese & fruit plates. Good for groups, call ahead. When we arrived it was very busy, crowded, but managing the crowd well. Buses, limos, and even horse trailers crowded the limited parking area and small driveway. Tip — Their driveway is long and gravel, uneven in places. Low sports cars(Corvettes, Porsche…) need to be very careful.

Had a great time this past Sunday. The weather was great and our tour guide was very knowledgeable(even though he has only been there for a month). He was nice enough to set up the tasting outdoors so that we could continue to enjoy the sunshine. The wines were decent mostly whites and about two reds. Really liked the Governor’s Fauquier and the Chardonnay. Also the basket was a nice touch at the end of the tour. The property has amazing views and enough space that it doesn’t feel too crowded even as folks come and go. We walked around the grounds and enjoyed the pond and even played a little corn hole. Overall, had a great experience and will be returning soon since we are now members!
