Walt Whitman Birthplace

This place is nice but the person who gave the tour hardly new anything about Walt Whitman. I think they should hire some better tour guides. I don’t think the people that work there are history buffs. Please get sum people who are more into it. They should think about dressing up as the people there talking about.
Don’t get me wrong its still a nice place it needs to get a little more fun with tour guides brining it alive.

A very interesting and pleasurable experience. We’ve visited many historic sites and homes and most were quite worthwhile, but the staff at WW were exemplary. Kudos to Executive Director, Cynthia Shor, and docent, Charles, for making us feel welcome. High praise to Brandon for his informative and thorough tour of the house and grounds. Additional thanks to Cameron for his digital help and conversation. Charles was a particularly kind host and very helpful.
My wife and I rate this as a «don’t miss» stop when visiting the NYC area.

I love history so any chance I can visit a landmark it’s a treat this is a cute little house but not much to see The furniture is not actual furniture from home which was a bit disappointing The tour guide was sweet but not too enthusiastic It’s only 6.00 to go in and that price was good there’s a little museum that has a bit of Walt Whitmans history in it but all in all I think I was expecting a lot more with this visit

My husband and I first visited the Walt Whitman Birthplace around three years ago, but visited again today with my in-​laws and found the experience to be even better!
Our tour guide very thoroughly explained the history of the home and surrounding property, detailing what it all is believed to have been like when Walt Whitman lived in the home and what has been restored now. She also described how the surrounding area has changed since that time, citing census data and historical record. The home is very bright and warm, thanks to the installation of heating to help in preservation of the period pieces in the home. It’s filled with furniture and items of the time, though some of the pieces are modern recreations. The tour guide explained the majority of items, even providing demonstrations of some. After our tour, we were able to watch the informative video and look around at the printing press and pictures in the museum. We also listened to a recording, taken by Thomas Edison, of Walt Whitman reciting his poem «America.» The tour guide provided information on the other members of the Whitman family, and even traced his family tree to living relatives in upstate New York.
We very much enjoyed this tour, both times. The Walt Whitman Birthplace is a little hidden gem, and it’s always such a treat to find these bits of history here on Long Island, especially amid the hustle and bustle of Route 110 (seriously, what’s with the traffic on that thing? How have they been doing construction for years upon years?)

I chose to come here for my birthday with a few of my girlfriends. I wanted to do something different and decided to take a tour of Walt Whitman’s birthplace.
Our tour guide was very helpful. She helped my group pay a 2 for 1 price because we had AAA memberships. So we got into the birthplace for $ 3 each instead of $ 6. $ 6 is pretty reasonable for a tour though. She put on a video for our group while we waited for one of our friends, she also made sure to alert the desk staff that our friend was running late but to let her in when she arrived at the birthplace because she was already paid for. She was very informative during the tour, answering all of our questions and thoroughly showing us around Walt Whitman’s birthplace. She also went above and beyond by letting my friend change her baby’s diaper in a community room when she needed to.
The grounds of his birthplace are beautiful and so is the house that Walt Whitman was born in. I have some photos that I hope to manage to post soon.
This place is worth the visit if you are into writing or history. It’s right here on Long Island if you live here and it’s a reasonable price. There’s also a picnic area so you can bag a lunch if you wish.

A nice place to visit if you’re a fan of Walt Whitman and historic farm houses. Guided tours, audiovisual show, library, museum shop/​bookstore, and picnic area are all included for $ 6 for adults. Amazing to find this piece of history on the super busy commercial eye sore that is route 110. It’s pretty cool to imagine that area as all farm land almost 200 years ago.
