Big Spring Park, to me, is super-cool b/c it features gifts to the city of HSV from other countries including the following(paraphrased from Wikipedia): 1903 light beacon(aka«the lighthouse») and a 1929 fog bell given by Norway in 1973, a bench from the United Kingdom and a sundial from Germany. In the spring, I love to see these in bloom, like a mini-DC: «the iconic red Japanese cherry trees, given by Japanese Major General Mikio Kimata as thanks to the city for its hospitality when hosting him, Kimata donated the original 60 Yoshino Cherry trees. He followed up on this gift with the donation of a «friendship bridge» to celebrate the United States Bicentennial. The bridge was formally dedicated on May 3, 1977. « There used to be an Eternal Flame and Declaration of Independence Monument on the far south end of the park, I guess the Flame wasn’t so Eternal after all. Well, maybe it is still there. Anyway, I’ll post a pic and you can go look for it, if you’d like. A President came to light the Eternal Flame back when and it was really fun! Now that your history lesson is over :-) do check out the ducks and geese. Go at Christmas when a downtown org. sponsors the display of about a zillion decorated Christmas trees throughout the park. And, we’ve had a «pop up» ice skating rink by the art museum for the past couple of winters in the park. BONUS Trivia Question: The park was prominently featured in the film«Constellation» filmed in 2005 and so was Billy Dee Williams. So, Grab a vino from pane e vino, or pop into the art museum, stretch your legs along the winding path around the lake and lagoon, and enjoy the outdoors! I had to deduct a star because of the goose/duck«droppings» and related smell and sometimes, the geese are kind of aggressive. Or maybe it’s just me. Go get your park on! :-)

Very nice little park that makes you forget you’re in the middle of a city. The water views are pretty and the ducks are entertaining. I saw a couple of really large fish as well. There’s a few benches around, some picnic tables closer to the VBC side, and even a lovely bridge. Didn’t appear to be a lot of covered seating though. Not sure how great the parking is as I was actually there for Pane E Vino. If I lived in Huntsville I do believe I’d come here for a picnic.

Great park on a nice day. Bring the kids, or a picnic, or both! There is a ton of fish and ducks there to feed. Although they sell the special food(bring quarters), you can also bring your own. They don’t encourage you to bring your own, as it allegedly kills the wildlife. Me thinks what is bad for the wildlife isn’t the bread, but the big barrels of cheesy poofs people bring from Costco. Be sure to hit the bridge and look for the little water varmint that comes out from time to time. I hear its a nutria… not sure myself, but it looks like a big rat that swims and plays. It’s like an otter, only its in Huntsville. A redneck otter if you will! Cons? Well, bathrooms are scarce. If the museum close by is open you can try there. I don’t think there is anything like a play structure for kids either. It’s just an interesting park with a big lake/pond and benches to relax and take it in.
