Excellent food and service. My favorite German restaurant in Huntsville.

A little piece of Germany right here in Huntsville! First time there today and the ambiance alone won me over. Larger than I had imagined, its sleek and modern European décor bring the spirit of Germany without overdoing it with oompah music and waitresses in German dresses. The atmosphere is simply lovely, and the side room with long picnic-style tables simply beckons for swaying beer steins and happy diners. The garden-esque décor is simply brilliant; I’m impressed with how they transformed the space into a perfect and authentic German restaurant. I am eager to return and order off the menu for many reasons, one of which is I’m hoping and expecting the food will be better prepared fresh rather than from the lunch buffet that I had today. It’s very rare to find a buffet with the quality of freshly prepared, of course. So the following food report is solely for the buffet and not the menu options. I sampled a little of everything, then returned for more of the best. There was a bean soup and a cream of asparagus soup. The temperature of the soup was a little low — warm, but not hot. Strong sour cream flavor. The creamy cucumbers were fresh and crispy; I would’ve liked more cream and fresh dill. The sweet and sour cucumbers were absolutely delightful, in a wonderfully sweet and tangy vinegar. I was most disappointment by the sauerkraut, which tasted out of a jar. Wished they made homemade, as easy as it is to make. The red cabbage also tasted jarred, but it had a wonderful flavor and I really enjoyed it. However the temperatures, again, were luke warm only. Canned greens and carrots — nothing special there. Roast pork with gravy wasn’t even lukewarm; I had to leave it on my plate. Spaetzle was room temperature to slightly cool. I had to warm it up with the sauce. Pork tips in gravy also lukewarm. The fried potatoes were average. Chicken and dumplings average. Bratwurst was tasty, schnitzel was also tasty. I added Jaeger(mushroom) sauce from the sauce warmer, which was very good. The schnitzel was thicker than usual, but had a nice flavor. There was a trio of sauce warmers — curry catsup(delish!), red pepper, and Jaeger. I really enjoyed this trio and being able to control the sauce amounts on the food items. The bread was a sliced baguette. Fine, but oh, how I would’ve loved to see German bread instead. What I returned for more of: sweet and sour cucumbers, bratwurst, and curry catsup. If I had room left in my belly, I would’ve gotten another pork schnitzel with Jaeger sauce. All in all a very nice lunch. The ambiance and staff were 5 stars. When I return for the lunch buffet, I’ll stick with my favorites and will be very happy. Looking forward to ordering dinner off the menu soon — the rouladen is calling my name. I suspect I’ll be updating this to 5 stars soon. If you like German food and/or beer, you’ll love this place!

Hildegard’s Biergarten located at 1010 Heathland Dr. Huntsville, AL35816 behind Landers McLarty Subaru on University Dr. The new lunch buffet was very good. It allowed us to try many German food items: tarragon chicken salad, German slaw, cucumber salad, fried potatoes, bean soup, pork and chicken schnitzel, bratwurst, cooked red cabbage, sauerkraut, goulash, spaetzel, three sauce/gravy selections. German mustard was on the table. There is also a two-page beer menu. It is definitely deserves a visit!

I’m hosting a German Foreign Exchange student this year and he wanted to go out for some«American German Food» thinking that it would be similar to taking someone from Mexico to Taco Bell for some authentic Mexican Food. Upon arrival he had a laugh at the sign on the building and quickly snapped a photo to share with his friends. I had him order for myself and another student from China. The delicious food spoke for itself and he was genuinely satisfied that it was just like back home. Needless to say we all enjoyed our meals and will return soon. Only negative comment from him is the large American portions we have in this country. Loved it and the staff!

As I enter the front doors of Hildegard’s Biergarten I greeted by the serene sounds of flowing water and a beautiful garden setting. Wait, what? Where’s the oomph music, the accordion music? I definitely get the sense I was entering a Japanese steakhouse, further in I notice the remnants of a sushi bar. I’m only guessing about the history of this place but I’m pretty sure I’m right. Once inside I’m greeted by the friendly wait staff and am immediately escorted to an open table. The tables are metal, kind of an outdoor patio style. Other parts of the restaurant have picnic bench style seating. A nice touch I thought. The waitress was very friendly and offered me extensive beer list to choose from. Very much appreciated. When I asked her for a recoomendation she said«I don’t drink beer!» Wait, what? She said«Since I’m not an expert I can bring you samples of any beers you’re interested in trying» Nice recovery, very nice. So she brought out three samples and I chose the Dunkel, loved it! Available in small, medium(.5l), and large(1l). She brought out bread to the table, a baguette thinly sliced with some butter. I was hoping for some rye or pumpernickel but that’s o.k. I chose the Jaeger Pork Schnitzel for my main course, the meal includes soup or salad. I chose the spicy goulash soup, very nicely done, chunky pieces of meat inside. Very smooth tasty, not overly spicy. The main course arrived shortly afterward, the port cutlet covered the plate!!! It was huge, accompanying the port cutlet was a generous serving of spatzle and red cabbage. The cutlet was tender and not over breaded, the mushroom gravy on top was also delicious! Unfortunately I have to admit I couldn’t finish my meal. That’s rare for me, trust me. I don’t think they offer dessert her as my check arrived with my takeout box. Overall, I like this place, there’s room from improvement but I would say it’s a solid contender in the Huntsville German restaurant field. The only thinng missing from Hildegard’s is some Bavarian-style decorations to remind me of the old country. The progressive germen music in the background was nice but I prefer the oomph and accordion music. I would definitely come back!

Great meal! We have been going to the one on Whitesburg for years and loved it. They had a chef change and all went downhill. This university location is much like the original Whitesburg location. Every course was delicious. From soup to cucumber salad and large portion chicken Berlin and veal Holstein. Deserts were as expected– fantastic! Beer selections were great and we look forward to returning. The only thing we would look forward to seeing in the future is more patrons. Please support this great restaurant!

Lacking. Both our schnitzels were burned and they were pretty bland as well; red cabbage was way too sweet and sugary; potatoes in the German potato salad were not cooked through. Great selection of German beers. Others have indicated it was good for lunch. That might be a better venue than dinner. We were really unimpressed. Not a place we’ll return to.

I stopped at the biergarden for the first time today, and wound up quite disappointed. I ordered the wiener schnitzel(normally a favorite of mine) and couldn’t believe how bland and tasteless it was. The German potato salad was no better. My waitress was fast and cheerful, but the only good thing I ate was the black forest cake for desert. It, at least, was excellent. I doubt I’ll be back again.

We went to Hildegard’s Biergarten located at 1010 Heathland Dr. Huntsville, AL35816 behind Landers McLarty Subaru. Sabine Collins-Cool and husband Jeff are the owners. The food was delicious. I had the Jaeger Schnitzel with red cabbage and friend potatoes. For dessert, I had apple struetsel which was amazing! Other choices were German chocolate cake and Blueberry Cheesecake. German Jaeger Schnitzel was made from pork, accompanied by a creamy mushroom Jaeger sauce. This recipe was perfect served with red cabbage and fried potatoes. My mother-in-law had Spaetzel. Spaetzel is a soft egg noodle and I noticed the creamy mushroom Jaeger sauce was poured over the egg noodles. This restaurant just opened I think they said in February of 2015. My humble opinion, this is the best German cuisine in Huntsville!

We visited Huntsville for a short time and looked for something different. This is an authentic German restaurant — I had the schnitzel, red cabbidge and spetzel. All were tasty All left me full and happy. The bear variety is large. I tried the west bear it was light and tasty. I want to come back

I normally go to Ol Hiedleberg Café when I’m in Huntsville but found the new Hildegard’s Biergarten. I decided to give this a try. It’s only been open a month and the place was almost empty but I went in anyway. The food was delicious and the staff was very good and down to earth. The German beer selection was vast yet somewhat narrow. I would like to see a few more lagers and traditional German brews. Overall a good experience. A bit more casual and laid back than the Café or Hildegard’s original location. I will return.
