Ate here last night with a group of 8. Service was good but the 6 of us who ate the shrimp all spent the next three hours sitting on the toilet with food poisoning. Wish I had ordered sushi instead.

Not the greatest service on the wait staff and for what is meant to be an entertaining cooking experience, the chef seemed to feel more inclined to talk with his friends. The food was decent but there’s better to be had.

I normally like hibachi but I was not very impressed. The food was fine but the chef seemed detached. I was expecting more from it and whereas there was overall nothing bad, I just didn’t feel impressed.

I don’t know about the bad reviews. I went and got what I expected… Hibachi! It wasn’t the best I ever had but good enough and definitely the best Huntsville has to offer

Never again. Had a reservation for a large group which was given away despite members being here on time. We were made to wait over an hour while parties who arrived after us were seated. Then we were seated and waited over an hour for a chef. The«show» was lacking and the food was mediocre. I think our entire party feels insulted and over it. I won’t ever be back…

Stay away!!! This review is based solely on the service. I wouldn’t know about the food, since my order was never brought to me. I went there for a friend’s birthday. Most of our group got the hibachi. However, two of us ordered sushi. We turned in our order at the exact same time. About 15 minutes later she got her sushi. I sit waiting, patiently. Everybody else is now eating. The other sushi orderer has had hers for over 20 minutes, so I asked my server. She tells me that they’re fixing it and it’ll be up soon. About 15 minutes later, the server comes back. Now she is telling me it still isn’t ready, since I did not put my table and seat number on the ticket??? WTF??? How am I supposed to know what table and seat I am sitting at!!! She wants to know if I want order to go or still want to eat I’m. I told her to cancel my order, since everyone else is now finished eating. I left the restaurant, and went about my night. I just looked at my bank account and they charged me for my food that I didn’t get!!! The sushi and hibachi menu were very limited.

Took my family and one of my daughter friends here today. They had a blast except for the salad dressing. They couldn’t handle that but I loved it. Chicken, steak and rice was awesome.

First time going here. Took family to the hibachi/teppan part of the restaurant. The food was very good and our chef was very entertaining as well as a good cook. Will definitely go back again. We had steak, shrimp and fried rice. Everything tasted good and came in large portions.

Standard show cooking. Usually go here for my oldest daughters birthday. My family loves it, my wallet doesn’t. Food is ok, but should be better for the price. Go for the kids.

My review is for the hibachi grill not the sushi side. Typical Japanese setting –you eat around a grill with 8 others unless your party is that big. Dinner starts with a salad(ginger dressing is the only option but they do a good job here my 5 year old loves it)…next is the soup… its basically a chicken broth flavored with onion and probably some soy sauce. It has slithers if mushrooms and scallions and dried fried onions in it when served, this restaurant’s soup has a nice flavor, many others I’ve visited taste like water. The next course is the main meal, your food is prepared in front of you while the chef cooks with a show… I haven’t seen anything done here I haven’t seen done at other Japanese restaurants… I come for the food not the show. You get a generous portion of food here and its seasoned well… they also have a good shrimp/yum yum sauce… it is pricey… Adults ~$ 20 a meal(higher if you get s filet), kids meals are gonna run you $ 8-$ 10 if memory serves me correct If I’m going to have Japanese in Huntsville this is where I’m going…

Went in on a Saturday night with the gf. Had never gone in before so I wanted to try something new. Went for the experience of the chefs cooking in front of you. I thought that was a nice touch. We did wait longer than usual for the chef to appear though. And I had no idea they seat you next to total strangers. That’s not a big deal to me though. I thought of it as sitting at a big booth. Food was very delicious and portions were huge. Ticket was about ~$ 40 which was a little high but ok. overall had a great time, and I’d go again when the opportunity presents itself(i.e. craving Chinese food).

I’ve eaten here twice now, once in 2012 and then again this past week. What amazed me is that the restaurant is still in business. First time i ate there, it looked so empty that i wondered how it can even stay in business. Location doesn’t seem to be bad as it’s on a busy road. Décor and architecture look pretty nice and inviting. But for whatever reason, there wasn’t much people eating there. Maybe it’s more crowded during the weekend(i was there for dinner in the early-middle part of the week)? Food was ok. Not bad, but definitely didn’t make me want to come back. I had teriyaki salmon the first time and sushi this past time. The salmon was just ok… not very memorable. Sushi was a little better; i had the spider roll, dragon roll, and spicy tuna roll. Spicy tuna was kinda bland; dragon roll was pretty forgetable; the spider roll was pretty tasty, so if i was to come back i would at least order that again.

Ordered the Chirashi bowl and found the fish very fresh and tasty. Good Miso soup and a wonderful ginger dressing on the house salad. Good presentation and service. If you like sushi, I would recommend this place.

My husband and I go almost once a week for their sushi. We love the sushi side; very quiet and staff is friendly. Not so impressed with the hibachi side. I brought my family of 11 people there because we liked it so well… and we sat on the hibachi side… I wasnt that hungry for the night so I tried ordering one sushi roll. They told me I had to order at least so much $$ to sit on that side. COMPLETELY unprofessional!!! Seriously?! I am a regular customer and brought my WHOLE family to eat at your restaurant! You have to ASK for miso soup if you’re getting soup. It’s just chicken broth with a couple stupid mushrooms.

The owner of this restaurant is a gem of a man, let me start off by saying. Sadly, when we went to enjoy this Shogun we were very disappointed not only with the hibachi food but also with the presentation. When I had gone to one in Montgomery it was amazing and engaging, and even the hibachi restaurant in Decatur was more entertaining than our guy. He wasn’t keeping any clear rhythm in his taps, so he was basically just an annoying cook with no real skill who kept banging on a big metal plate for no particular reason. His English wasn’t great, so when he did try to do the jokes it was hard to understand why it was supposed to be funny. Perhaps with a different cook on a different night it would be okay, but when we went it was not.

My wife and I used to frequently come here for lunch and my wife would always order the teriyaki salmon. One day her salmon came out with a ranky smell and looked uncooked. She complained about it and the waitress took the plate to the kitchen. The waitress came back and told us the cook tried the salmon and said it tasted okay. The management refused to remove the meal off the ticket even though they never brought it back. They made so much of a scene when when we told them we refused to pay for her meal that they were about to call the cops if we didn’t pay. That was over five years ago and we haven’t been back.

It seems like every restaurant in Huntsville that people tell me is great turns out to be terrible. This is the case with Shogun as well. The first time my wife and I went here, we went on a Saturday night with no reservation. The wait was over 2 hours to get in. No big deal. We didn’t have a reservation, so we made one for next Saturday and went and got something else to eat. The next Saturday, we showed up for our reservation 15 minutes early. We ended up waiting almost an hour just to get seated, and another 20 – 30 minutes just to have our drink orders taken. We placed an order for some sushi as an appetizer and when they finally arrived, they were huge and sloppily made. The food was just so-so(I’ve had MUCH better teppanyaki elsewhere). But the final straw was walking out the door, I noticed the health score was 80. This was a couple years ago so maybe it’s better, but 80 seems kinda low for a restaurant like this. So give Shogun a miss. If you want really good teppanyaki, head out to County Line road and hit Sakura. They haven’t been bad yet!

Mmmmmm… combine a great sushi bar with a great grill and add some fantastic Japanese flair to create a fantastic dining experience. The term sei-i-tai-shogun means«great general who subdues the eastern barbarians» but the only thing this Shogun is subduing is me… to sleep. The sad part is that they have throngs of Huntsvillians convinced it’s great stuff! The décor is «early american garage sale Japanese». They attempted a nice fountain at the entrance… but it screams«Look I can sort and install tile after a bucket of Saki!» The hostess was not a «people person». Unfortunate. We were rather pushed around through the maze of rooms and crammed into the corner… then 2 minutes later… moved… In the grill rooms they cram 10 – 12 people around each 2′ by 4′ grill. That’s elbow to elbow… not comfortable with friends… definitely not comfortable with strangers. Without choice, you are given a small iceberg lettuce, carrot slivers salad with thousand island dressing in a pressed plastic bowl. Now, I know Japan is an island nation… nice try… but that doesn’t count. They also pass out broth with a slice of mushroom and a few chunks of spring onion bobbing in it… all, of course, in a pressed plastic bowl. It wasn’t Miso, Hot and Sour, Egg drop… it was more like the dishwater soup bowls were cleaned in. Vague, boring and bland. I agree with Arisa W. All of my sushi appeared to have been assembled in the dark. The seaweed wraps were dry and stuck to each other indicating fresh was something they vaguely remembered. The rice wasn’t sushi rice. It had too much starch making it a mushy glob. While the barely sushi grade salmon, yellowtail and salmon skin were tolerable the squid was«go-clean-your-aquarium, Timmy» fishy. Eat-the-wasabi-fishy! The crammed grill area was set with the oh so traditional pressed plastic. Japanese beer is served only in bottle… apparently they ran out of plastic beer glasses. Chop sticks are something you must request. Really? Don’t these people even watch bad TV or Bruce Lee films? 5 year olds know sushi is eaten with chop sticks! Ugh… The entertainment was like watching an elderly lady wash clothes on a wash board. She doesn’t really want to do it but she needs clean clothes and this is the only way she knows how. At least they use the traditional plastic ketchup bottles to squirt the sauce on your entrée. Ah… entertainment and history! My filet mignon was a nice cut and properly sized… even cooked to medium rare as ordered but it was begging for flavor. Begging. It wasn’t aged. It wasn’t seasoned(remember… I was there watching) It wasn’t anything…. What a disappointment. The fried rice was boring, bland and … well… not eaten. If you are looking for a «great general who subdues the eastern barbarians» skip this place and go to instead. At least they are entertaining and have some sense of tradition. If you’re after food… try the other sushi bars and even a Japanese steak house that are in Huntsville. Shogun is a waste of time and money.

I am writing for the sushi part, not the habachi grill part which, after seeing their sushi, I am still lacking the courage to go back. I had the sushi/sashimi combo. Please note, the typical sushi rolls should be neatly wrapped with nori, densely packed. My sushi rolls were practically falling apart, somewhat resembles 8 little piles of rice and thingys that I don’t know what do do with them. The sashimi … let’s just say, it’s a tiny pile of un-chilled, paper-thin slices of fish. The experience was so horrifying, I still wake up in the middle of the night and cry about it.
