I live mostly in California but have a condo in Austin; the place has an AC/​furnace from the 1990s. Arrived in July to find the AC blowing but not delivering cool air. It was getting late, so I went on the web, searched a bit, and via website made a next-​day appt with ARS (a national chain). ARS Tech arrived next morning, examined the system, and told me repair would cost upwards of $ 800; said the freon canister was so defunct it was not possible to recharge it. «Now I’m not a salesman,» he said, and proceeded to pitch me on buying a whole new AC/​furnace for $ 7000 to $ 15,000.
After he left it occurred to me to call an architect I know in Austin, and sure enough he had a recommendation, Available AC (
). Called and a tech arrived within the hour. «There’s my dinosaur of a compressor,» I said, and he replied, «Yeah, but these older ones just keep working and working.» Replaced a capacitor and added a pound or so of freon (which the ARS guy specifically said was impossible to do), and total came to under $ 400. Now the AC is working great.
I will be using Available AC again.
