Cape Disappointment State Park — fortunately the name gets it all wrong. We came here on a clear and sunny day and enjoyed the fresh air, the great forest and the breathtaking views! In this state park you can go hiking on different difficulty levels, be sure to take you camera for all those great varieties of views you will get here!

$ 10 parking(or $ 99 annual Discover Pass). The price is sort of a shock after visiting a number of places in Oregon with free parking. I left my day pass behind for the next guy. Hike uphill to and from the lighthouse. The fauna is certainly interesting, with a jungle/island feel. Dead Man’s Cove is a great sheltered area to admire the sunset(bring a flashlight!) or play in the sand. If you come at the right time of the year, I think the sunset will align with the opening of the cove. The building beside the lighthouse is actually used by the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard have put up large information boards to teach the public about the nearby waters and how their duties are performed. The water crashing into the cliffs viewable from the lighthouse is very soothing.

I just love this park. It’s scenic any time of year. The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is informative and has exhibits on the Coast Guard and lighthouses, in addition to covering the whole scope of the Lewis and Clark expedition. They sometimes have whale-watching guides in the center, too, and it’s built on an old military fort. This will sound funny, but their gift shop is the best – the lady who works there was telling me that they work with independent designers for their t-shirts, posters, postcards, etc, and it really shows. One of the most beautiful spots in Washington state!

If you are lucky to get here on a clear day — the place will not disappoint. The park has a few short hikes to the lighthouses. The hikes offer stunning views of the coast. It is considered the most dangerous entry point to the US — so the waves can be strong, which makes for a stunning coastline. There are restrooms located close to the park ranger station. Highly recommended.
