This place is so cozy and delicious. I got an alcoholic dessert and hot chocolate. The music in the venue is traditional and really funny to listen to.

Traditional hot potato salad is fantastic. Heinz is always happy to greet you, and the service at lunchtime is quick. I eat here at least once a month, the noodles… can’t get enough!

Very authentic and very delicious German meals, I highly recommend this restaurant. The menu is right where it should be and the meals are prepared perfectly. Having lived in three locations over 9 years in Germany, I have found it difficult to find decent German cuisine in the States… I am now a regular at this place even though it involves a 45 minute drive each way. The staff is courteous and helpful, the facility is quaint and clean. Highly recommend.

The food reminded me of my stay in Germany. What a delight! I really enjoyed the knackwurst with the sauerkraut and potatoes. The red cabbage was also fantastic. I’ll be coming back!

Dinner on New Year’s Eve was amazing. I had the jaegerschnitzel and my friend the pork loin special. The food was superb! Dessert incredible! Waitress named April was fantastic. This will definitely be a regular dining spot for me.

I’ve never had German food so I don’t have anything to compare his experience with. It was great food and a quaint place. We had knack wurst, a Reuben sandwich, and the beef lover sandwich. They were all served quickly and came out nice n hot on a cold December day in Kansas. The beef lover sandwich was the best. The warm potato salad was good too. I recommend it, the staff were really sweet too.

Went for dinner with a friend. Got there around 5:30pm. Place was empty except for one other table, so we got there right before dinner rush. I wasn’t impressed with the menu at all, and I thought the prices were high. I ended up getting the Rheinland Burger and home fries. They really skimped on the home fries, and the burger was tough because whoever added the spices worked them too much into the burger. Friend had the bratwurst dinner, it was all good but the sauerkraut was not as hot as it should have been. The dinner roll was tiny and cold. We had to ask for refills, even though we were only one of two customers in the place. The décor is ugly and old, nothing charming about it. I don’t hate the place, I just don’t see what the allure is. I found the menu boring, the food pricey, the décor hideous, the service so-so. We ordered a piece of cake for dessert, it was huge, so we shared, and it was very good, but very likely it wasn’t made there. We left and sat outside across the street on a bench, and saw people going in there to eat, and several were dressed up, although this is not a place to dress up for. The dinner menu has very few options, I think around 10, and half of those were a schnitzel of some sort. Doubtful I’ll go back.

A terrible sorry excuse for a German restaurant. If you have ever spent an extended amount of time living in Germany, then you will recognize that the food here is horrible and a terrible excuse for German food. After eating here, our stomachs were upset all night long. I should have known, when I saw the kitchen, it was not very clean. I ordered the cordon bleu. The chicken was not fresh, more like tough tasteless prepared food. There was one tiny speck of Swiss cheese and a piece of ham the size of a postage stamp. The chicken was deep fat fried in old grease. Other members of our group reported similar tasteless tough food, like the schnitzel and bratwurst. The service is very poor, and the server never once asked us how our food was or offer to refill our water. Instead, she pushed expensive alcoholic drinks. Places like this that add an automatic 18% service charge to your bill know they have lousy service and want to ensure they will get a tip. Then, on top of the automatic 18% service charge, the server had the nerve to ask if we wanted change, when we paid the bill. Now that is nerve! With the 18% service charge, she is getting about a $ 10 tip per person and then she wants to know if she can keep the change for her lousy service! The prices on all menu items were outrageous. Avoid this place, the most horrible excuse I have ever experienced for a German restaurant. Never, ever, would I ever return here.

Very good German fare. I had the special — roast pork with red cabbage and potato pancakes. My wife and daughter each had a pork schnitzel. The highlight was the desert — apple strudel with vanilla sauce. Service was excellent. A little pricey but if we are ever in Independence again we will stop here.

A favorite for me when I have time to head to independence. I am never disappointed with The German fare that they have here. The Schnitzel with pork is so good. Actually, it may be the only thing I’ve eaten but the good news is it is served in four or five different ways. Food is always delivered hot. Beer and wine choices are good. Dessert is excellent.

German restaurant in downtown Independence, right across the street from the Truman visitor center. Several different schnitzel dishes on the menu(choice of pork or veal). Not wanting potatoes with, I got spaetzle which was the best thing on the plate, nicely pan-fried. My companion had an imaginative and tasty salad with fruit and lettuce, and a delicious banana cream dressing.

A 15.00 tip was added on the tip we already left. We had to call 4 times before someone could address the issue. Not once did any of the employees offer to write down our phone number. We were told to keep calling until the owner was in. This is unacceptable! We were offered a free dessert for our troubles. What a terrible restaurant.

Birthday dinner with a good friend. I’m a huge fan of their sauer braten. Tasty tasty, really good bier to go along with as well.

Very authentic food, and good portions. We came during lunchtime, and it wasn’t busy at all. From the pictures on the wall, it can apparently become crowded and fun for parties. The service was good enough, but not especially friendly, thus just 4 stars. But in every other facet, it was a great German experience. I would definitely come back.

This is the second time in 10 years or so that I have been to this restaurant. Partly, because we generally do not come out to Independence or Eastern Jackson County much as it is out of the way for us. However, a friend of ours organized a lunch on a Sunday and there were five of us gathered. The little restaurant is located on the square and was quaintly decorated. The atmosphere was homey and comfortable. Our server seemed a bit hesitant. I think she may have just been a little on the reserved side. She was not rude just kind of hesitant. A couple of our friends ordered the meat and cheese board which came with some mustard and rye bread. The server also brought out a basket of not-warm dinner rolls and some butter. I had the jaegerschnitzel with käsespaetzel. I ordered the veal. It was quite a nice portion and it was very tender and lightly fried. Quite good. The käsespaetzel was a bit leathery and bland, perhaps cooked too long. It was edible and average. My partner had rouladen which I did not get the opportunity to taste. ONe of our party had the cordon bleu. I would like to try the sauerbraten next time because there will be a next time. I will say, the Grünauer is superior to Rhineland but it is also more Viennese than standard German. Additionally, Rhineland is more of a personal effort I feel. We would definitely go back.

Something has changed. I visited for kaaspatzle, and brought my mom with me. She ordered the chicken breast. It was over $ 15. I ordered Kaspatzle with a brat. It was in the appetizer section. My mom’s chicken breast looked like leather slices, and apparently tasted about the same. The gravy looked like it was from a can of white gravy. When I saw it I almost walked out. It made me sick it was that much money. She her potatoes were good. The kaspaztkle was really good. For the price there was tons of it. I bit into the brat, which looked under cooked, and it tasted like soap. I put it down and boxed it. I ate half of the kaspatzle, boxed the other half. We both ordered cake, which was really good. I had hazlenut. I couldn’t tastenut. But it was good none the less. During the night both of us had stomach aches… makes you wonder. I will never go here again, considering I almost walked out. The entrée she had looked like something from a nursing home. Certainly not worth the cost. The brat tasted like soap. Stomach pains all night. Absolutely not.

One word — wow. Though I agree with some of the other reviewers about authenticity of the product, please remember you are dining in the middle of Independence and not 100 feet from the Rhine. There are some subtle home-cooked differences that can’t always be diffused when you take the product out of its element. But in terms of good German food in the Metro? Rhineland fills the gap that Berliner Bear left years ago. I’m a huge fan of Grunauer downtown, but the simple fact is that Rhineland is the Volkswagen, the people’s food, and Grunaeur is the Porsche, infused this and that with fancy cocktails and hip patrons. I’ll drive that Volkswagen all day. The Square in Independence is a great spot for RL. It’s one of few places in the Metro that actually feels«Old World» enough to make RL’s German inspired themes(Oktoberfest flags, crests, steins, and wood paneled walls) seem realistic. Sitting by the front window, I couldn’t help but gaze at the buildings on Main St and think I was tucked away in Heidelberg, one of my favorite spots in Germany. Beers roll out in .5 liter glasses, Oktoberfest steins, or das boot if you’re up to the challenge. Similarly, you can’t beat the entertainment — two musicians(guitar and zither) playing Germanicized pop hits(Beatles, Elvis, Wipeout) along with traditional ditties(Scott Joplin, Fur Elise, etc…) If the ambiance sets RL up with Old World iconography, the food sets RL up with bold flavors and all time favorites. Spaetzl abounds as does schnitzel. Four diners last night tried four different options. We shared the jagerschnitzel, covered in a rich mushroom sauce, and zigeunerschnitzel, complemented by a tangy onion and pepper sauce. Both were outstanding. Another diner tried the smoked pork chop which was more like a smoked ham steak, but equally tasty. The sauerbraten was marvelous as well. The fried potatoes were equally well prepared but the sauerkraut stole the show. Don’t miss it as a side item if it doesn’t come on your plate. We shared RL’s bread pudding in a creamy vanilla sauce for dessert and gingerly wobbled out of the restaurant feeling full, happy, and still slightly amazed at the quality considering its location. The Square is coming back thanks in large part to restaurants like RL. The hustle and bustle of this county seat seemed to die with Harry Truman in the 70s, but if Rhineland keeps serving up German favorites and cooking them with a careful German eye for fine quality, the Square will quickly return to greatness in a hurry.
