I’m lettering a sign for a Christmas gift and wanted to use sign painters’ 1 SHOT brand paint. Des Moines used to have at least two stand alone art stores. Now they have none (Michaels and Hobby Lobby do not count to me as they are more «craft» stores.) I had to go to this Iowa City BLICK art materials store to buy my lettering paint. They had an entire rack of what I was seeking. I also purchased some calligraphy pens. I’ve been to this store several other times as my girlfriend is also an artist. The staff is always really helpful but can seem kind of «you’re gonna shoplift something» lurking. They’re probably bored. There’s a wide selection of art supplies and lots of specials/​deals. The adjacent parking garage has a most helpful first hour free parking.

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t been here sooner!
I called ahead to make sure they had the supplies I needed — they answered the phone promptly and were very helpful. When I arrived, I asked someone to point me in the right direction and they took me right to my materials.
As a handmade shop owner, I go through a lot of random art supplies… various varieties of paper being one of them. Blick has the best selection and prices I’ve found locally yet. Some of their items are pricier than buying online or at other shops in the area but in most cases, they carry the nicer-​quality brand and in general, you get what you pay for with art goods.

this is the best place to buy art supplies downtown iowa city. great product selections. the staff is helpful. i can’t recall if my parking could be validated, but there’s a ramp that connects to the old capital mall.
