Small roadside stone memorial It caught my eye on Unilocal and had to stop and check it out. Glad I did. I had no clue about the 1935 hurricane in the area and why so many veterans were killed. It’s a simple large stone monument and takes just a few minutes to check out. Also a good spot to stretch your legs a little.

I’ve driven by this monument a ton of times and said, oh — hurricane monument, but never stopped. I admit, I didn’t even know which hurricane or the amount of destruction it caused. The 1935 Hurricane Monument was built in 1940. I had no idea this monument has stood for so long and it must have still been pretty fresh in the minds of Keys residents at the time. This monument was built to honor the 700 people who lost their lives in the devastating 1935 hurricane. The 700 number totally blew me away, since there simply was not not that many folks in the Keys at that time. The monument itself is quite beautiful, there’s plenty of seating areas and information around. There’s parking off the access road(even wheelchair accessible parking). And it’s most likely easiest to access the monument on your way out of the Keys and headed back up north. So you’ll probs be headed back on a Sunday, there will be traffic and you’ll just want to get back home, but this monument is really worth a stopover. Get out stretch your legs and check it out– you won’t miss that much time and you’ll get to check out a piece of old Keys history.
