Today was my first visit. The food was«okay». I ordered the Pork Chop, with mashed potatoes and sweet and sour green beans. Nothing healthy here. Both entrée’ choices were«fried». I ordered the park chop because I figured it would be easier to peel the fried part off. The mashed potatoes were home made as promised but nothing special. The sweet and sour green beans(which I was told was their most popular side), was way too sweet. I like to support local business and I do love The Fondren, but this place will have to step it up if they want me to come back. Considering this was a Friday at lunch time, this place should have been rockin’ and it was not. Just average food and a little pricey for what you get plus they ask for a tip up front. They did clear away our plates, but an offer of a refill would have been nice. If I go back I will not tip in advance. There are several much better choices for lunch in The Fondren.

I wished there was a 2 ½ stars as I think that might be more accurate. I had lunch today at the Cosmopolitan Café and over all the food was good but not so unlike your average cafeteria. I had the fried catfish, mustard greens and mac and cheese with cornbread and iced tea for about 13.00. The fish was fried well. It was hot and somewhat crispy and had a good taste but again I’m sure I’ve had this exact fish before and not here at the Cosmopolitan Café. There was nothing special about this lunch. The mac and cheese was ok, much as I’d expect out of a box. It was not cheesy nor baked and had no discernible flavors just as the greens were and the cornbread. I’d think for the slightly higher prices they would try a bit harder. I think I might have gotten the same meal at UMC cafeteria for about 8.00 bucks.

I would give a full five stars based on the quality of the sides alone, but I’ve been only a very, tiny bit disappointed with the entrée, twice. Both times it was the pulled pork, which was good, but just not quite good enough to garner a full five stars. I must say that if I would have written this after my first meal, there would be no doubt that they earned all five. That day was meatloaf that had a flavor like no other meatloaf I’ve had… Anyway, for the real run down, this is a main + two sides kind of place, though they do have other options(a listing for a salad and one other option). Each time I have been, they seem to have had four main options and five side options. Pulled pork, meatloaf, chicken pot pie, and chicken n dumplings are the types of main courses they have offered on my trips. Sweet and sour green beans(you must get them!), Cajun coleslaw, mashed potatoes, etc. are the types of sides. They have always been excellent. I’m thinking the roll was of the Sister Schubert yeast variety. They are only open for lunch on Tuesday — Friday, 11 – 2. I have come at least three times on a Monday, always forgetting they are closed. Parking can be an issue, depending on time, since the parking lot there gets crowded.
