Dame

I’m only writing this review because I hope Dame will eventually find a store again and not sell only online. Great, adorable, moderate priced, wearable vintage. I guess there was just too much competition in JP. :(

This place looks super cute from the outside. I repeat the outside! Have been there two times and they have been closed. Store hours have changed since it seems the store will be permanently closing in July. After reading that on the website I went on a Thursday which they are suppose to be open at 1. I stood there with another woman (she left earlier) till like 1:45 and nothing. Sad, I would have loved to give them some business but I guess they will close without it. Makes me wonder… maybe this is why the are closing!

Nice store, very nice helper-​lady. I don’t like being hovered over but do appreciate help, found this store to have that key to my heart. I have gotten some nicer objects here without overspending. Kudos for having a nice place to visit and shop.

This place is a spacious, airy shop that is not jam-​packed with items. There is quite a bit of breathing room and even a loveseat by the front windows.
The selection is small and probably changes a lot. While I was there, I saw some cute circle skirts and a gorgeous peach satin full pleated skirt. There were blouses, dresses, coats, scarves, hats, belts, jewelry, and shoes. Some of the items seemed difficult to pull off for everyday. Another rack seemed to have reworked vintage items and some of the most wearable stuff in the store. I couldn’t justify a dark blue wrap cashmere cardigan into my wardrobe and there was also a pastel blue and pink cashmere button up cardigan from Pringle of Scotland. The handwritten tags identify the decade each item comes from and includes some cute information about it.
Prices were higher than I’m used to, but the clothes are of good quality and they seem to offer free alterations. The sales associate never said a word to me although I was the only person in the store.

I attended Dame’s 2^nd Anniversary party this evening, which included a live music duo (awesome), shopping & a «Best Vintage Outfit» contest. Lot’s of fun and provided a very personal shopping experience. Although I did not find anything on this visit (my first), I love the atmosphere, select merchandise (REAL vintage), staff and the prices are quite reasonable. I will definitely be returning.

I am an avid vintage shopper and decided to give Dame a visit. I have only been a few times and found some great things, I even attended one of their sewing meet-​ups but I simply find it impossible to return.
What prevents me from shopping at Dame isn’t the greeting you most likely will not receive, but the fact that each time I have been in that shop I was absolutely revolted by the shop girl’s continuously poor hygiene, it was so bad it made my eyes water. So until someone can confirm for me that deodorant has been generously applied, I’m afraid I will be vintage shopping elsewhere.

Okay, this is the only store I at which I have ever purchased a too-​small dress. Why? Because they will alter it, for free, if I wish. Now, I secretly would rather lose weight and keep the dress as is, it’s that amazing. I believe in the integrity of vintage clothes. But I trust and admire the expertise and service Dame has to offer.
You will find at Dame:
– a medium sized, rotating selection of vintage clothes, mostly for women but some for the boys too
– well-​preserved vintage, mostly from the 40s through the 80s
– extremely well chosen, carefully edited pieces at reasonable value (some are pricey but worth it)
– a non-​pushy helpful saleswoman. She has done a great job just getting the merchandise she has, and clearly knows her stuff.
My only wish would be to get one good light on the customer in front of the outside mirror. The mood lighting is beautiful, but I’m getting old! I want to see your vintage! But the dressing room is well lit, this is just my age showing.

This place is serious vintage. It is distinctly not «we-bought-a-new-pair-of-jeans-and-“distressed”-them vintage.
The selection is small, but action packed. In the male-​presenting section I found a number of serious vintage long sleeve shirts that caught my eye. This is also a great place to go if you’re an oldskool vest and cap wearing fellow. Everything was clean, sorted, and easy to browse.
My only gripe is simply that they aren’t particularly cheap. That said, I’m more than willing to pay a little more the privilege of not being bullshitted about what vintage is.

Sunny and lovely and with a spot-​on title. I know this is a ladies’ affair, but men looking for great plaid or madras-​type shirts and western wear would do well to visit. The jackets were in essentially perfect condition.
The girl working there was also damn cute and sweet and if I lived in Boston I’d have come back in a linen suit and taken her to a moving picture show and to eat strawberries atop a Ferris wheel.

Stylish. Beautiful. Restored. Quality. Reasonable. All describe Dame, a store that highlights the diverse urbanness of JP and the class and glamor of its owner, Dany Pearson, who has created a delight of a vintage store, which is well-​organized, clean, and enthralling for any clothing-​lover. Included are clothes from fancy to casual which are washed and lovingly restored, shoes and jewelry (some handmade from local vendors). All genders can appreciate the style and fashion within these doors. There are occasional sales and special events (such as movie nights, happy hours with cocktails, and neighborhood block parties) which make Dame not just a store but an event, and, a meeting place.

I usually shop for men’s clothing at Dame. Every time I go I find something I like and at a good price.
I shop for vintage in New York and in Jamaica Plain and so I know good stuff and good prices. The last visit to Dame I bought a mens flannel shirt, red and black, in like new quality, it was a steal and I’m wearing it every week this winter.
The selection of menswear is not huge but it is a good selection and they always has size small which is harder to find. Most of the clothing I bought seems to be unworn, some has been worn lightly.
I also bought by girlfriend a pair of Ferragamos also at an excellent price. I love Dame I just wish it were in Brooklyn instead of JP.

I grew up in JP and I remember when the only cool shop was Gumshoe and the Boomerangs was a Fayva shoe store. Ah times have changed. Rents have gone up, eco-​moms pound pavent, hipsters roam the streets and artists can no longer afford pond-​side apartments. Anyway, Dame was a great store. The owner clearly has a distinct style she is after. It might not be for all the hipsters but I thought her selection of vintage dresses was great. They were a little pricey but not nearly as bad as some the the extra pricey stores I am used to in San Francisco. Great stuff! I will be back for more tax free clothing.

OMG, y’all. I was visiting some family in JP this weekend and took a special trip to Dame. I have never found more than one thing in any vintage store that both fits and flatters me, and usually it takes longer than I’m willing to spend to find that one item
At Dame, I had to put things back to avoid breaking the bank! There was SO MUCH that I wanted to buy (and so much that I bought…) Enough maxi dresses to outfit me for the entire summer — check. High waisted raspberry shorts (I would NEVER have tried these had a Dame employee not told me — correctly — that they would fit like a glove, and are somehow more flattering than anything I currently own) — check. Leopard Print bodysuit — SUPER check. I love Dame. It’s also really nicely priced. My suitcase is straight up stuffed.

My first visit to Dame, I walked away with a gorgeous $ 40 pair of ostrich leather boots. Totally 60’s Nancy Sinatra. I knew I had found a new home.
Dame has charm, ambiance, and everything is hand-​picked, so while there’s not a ton of merchandise to rifle through, it is quality. I still slap myself over that plum purple dress I never tried on. The next time I was in Dame, it was gone.
They had a delightful pair of supple leather driving gloves that I should’ve bought. There’s a brief men’s section that’s worth a gander, though the shirts were a wee bit overpriced and a better men’s selection can be found at 40 South.

I checked out this shop since it has such a wonderful storefront. I think it has a decent stock of vintage clothing, but I just didn’t quite get the shop. I thought — since I read it somewhere — that they also had vintage inspired clothing but could not find anything. Also the sizes were either too small or too large, which can be challenge for the medium sized.
The jewelry was interesting and I will probably go back to buy some of the stuff I saw. In terms of clothing, not my style or they did not have anything for me on the day I was there.

I hate to be the downer of the group… but after seeing the other reviews I’ll definitely give them another try.
Two star rating for the very, very unfriendly woman working there. I popped in on a whim, there was no one else in the store, and the woman working there didn’t say one word to me. I’m not looking for a conversation, just a «how are you?» or even just «hi.»
Some cute things– cute sweaters and a gorgeous ‘40s cocktail dress.
Will give them another try and hopefully feel a little more welcome next time.

I got a vintage Pendleton from Dame that I haven’t wanted to take off all winter.
Although Dame’s focus is mostly women’s clothes, they’ve got a super cute section for the fellas – hence the Pendleton. And the excellent lace-​up broken in brown ankle boots I got. And the fun cuff links next to a good spread of ties.
They’ve got good music playing, great b&w photographs on the wall, and a selection of clothing that really feels hand-​picked.

Welcome to the world DAME! This newly opened shop is sure to become the new hotttt thing in JP — impeccably chosen vintage clothes for both men and women (with an eye towards both the affordable and the rare), awesome work by local artists, and a positive atmosphere. Dame has a HOME in JP!!! All the wonderful things that were at the SOWA markets this summer have found a place in a store on South Street. I was impressed with the amount of high-​end vintage that was reasonably priced. And, an added bonus was that there is a nice selection of sizes, so if you’re not a size 0 – 8 (as I am NOT), there were still lots of things from which I could choose and look like a FOX!
Men’s and women’s selections abound, and the store is tastefully decorated: dig the pics on the wall to the left after you’ve walked in, and the other little touches that indicate the owner, Dany Pearson, has invested lots of thought into making sure your shopping experience is memorable, classy, and fun.
There are also accessories that finish your outfit. Make it a point to stop in – your wardrobe will thank you!

I picked up a hot vintage belt for my lady at Dame last weekend. I loved looking through the racks, checking out their rare finds, carefully selected from as far away as Baltimore. Their shirts, ties, shoes, belts and adorable little dresses are truly inspired selections. I appreciate a distinguished Dame and this spot hits the mark.
