Yeah, this place on occasion has the distinct smell of bleach and hot garbage, but the staff is friendly and their cigarette prices are a bit lower than Fernandez Spa down the street. It’s also right in front of a bus stop, so it’s convenient if you just need to jump in, buy something, then hop on the 39. In a vast sea of sketchy JP bodegas, JP Variety is certainly not the worst offender. I’d give it two stars, but the friendly employees earn the third.

I had to hold my breath the whole time I was in here. Nuff said. Dusty shelves, a guy that kept his eyes on my chest the whole time, even though I was in there with my infant son. Still, gets the job done I guess.

Dusty shelves? Check. Limited and strange assortment of items? Check. Painfully bored employees? Check. Oddly used equipment? Check. Weird smell? Check. Yeah. Bodega. Get your chips and your soda and move on. Then ponder why they use a non-working refrigerated cabinet to store dry goods.

It always smells weird in here. For a name that boasts variety, there isn’t really any. I don’t know, this place sucks even when I just want a bottle of soda. Nothing seems… right.

After finding expired milk at Fernandez(which I wuz expecting … I don’t really shop there for items with expiration d8z), I was DISGUSTED to find the SAME expired milk at J P Variety for nearly twice the price! This place has a weird vibe inside. The lighting reminds me of a police station, but maybe that’z bkuz you’d expect the guy behind the counter to be under arrest for selling such rotten groceries? The selection is worse than the clearance rack at the Stop & Shop in Jackson Square. I’m pretty sure they accept WIC cards, if that’s your thing. :(
