June 32016 Went out to get salads for two. Sante Fe and Chicken Caesar salad and Nacho’s and chicken. Sat in for a bit. I found myself with spoiled cheese in my ceaser salad and no chicken in the nachos. The spoiled cheese was a experience that I’m not a custom to a this restaurant. Some others in the area. When I started to explain I paid for chicken in my nacho’s. The person making my nachos stated there is chicken in the nachos. What’s the problem. Very angry tone. So I begin pulled the large amount of cheese away from the basic nachos with no chicken. So then manager immediately stated let me see. So then the manager provide me nachos by then it was time. Take to go. Which were then trashed. So as I was saying spoiled cheese in my ceaser salad so I picked the cheese out that smelled . I was totally out of my mind by this time. After many years of frequenting this restaurant. I’m really disappointed with my recent trips. Feb.

It’s always a disappointment. The intent is good but even mastering even simple mexican seems beyond them. Salsa, beans,… Everything lacks specialness, flavor, spice. It’s just something to put in your stomach. If you want Mexican look somewhere else. if you want inoffensive wraps and toddlers screaming while spilling food everywhere, you’ve found your spot.

Not law enforcement friendly. I’ve gotten sick from this place twice and so have some of my coworkers. Never eating here again.

Terrible. Soggy tortilla filled with beans and rice with a miserly sprinkling of meat. No vegetables, no sauce, no flavor. It’s criminal how easy and cheap it would be to make this food good. Do not recommend!

The beans are very plain and the burritos would taste so much better if they were seasoned and flavored — you know, not just dumped from the can. The staff are ok except for that one guy who gives you grief whenever you tell him what you want in your burrito and he says that you HAVE to order something from the menu, no customization! What if I don’t WANT exactly what’s on the menu?! So rigid, silly and unimaginative! Other than this, when at a loose end for a cheap dinner, it’ll do.

being vegetarian it’s hard to find a good place that has tofu to add to your burrito(and make it good if they do) but purple cactus does that. keep in mind if you’re looking for a real authentic burrito you won’t get that, but you’ll still get something delicious. the staff is also super friendly and helpful

This is the best place for mexican food in Jamaica Plain. I work and live nearby and I almost always order the santa fe salad or a steak burrito. The ingredients are always fresh and the taste is unbelievable!

Cold snowy day in Boston felt a little better after a tasty burrito at Purple Cactus. Is this the rare authentic Mexican place in Boston? No. But don’t let that fool you. I had the Burrito special which was steak simmered in guajillo sauce. The guajillo sauce was surprisingly delicious with a taste made from scratch. It’s casual Mexican food made with real Mexican ingredients. It’s an American concept combined with true Mexican ingredients. Let it be known that I am a Mexican food snob that expects and requires authentic restaurants but sometimes you have to give credit to Purple Cactus for good food with great ingredients. And if your friend doesn’t like Mexican then have them eat the salads while you destroy a Guajillo Steak Burrito. Adiós.

Let’s get one thing straight from the start: these aren’t authentic Mexican burritos. These are hippie burritos. Now that everyone’s got clear expectations, we can proceed. My JP friends seem to be very hot/cold on the PC. Husband and I love it. I get myself a little shrimp burrito on a whole wheat wrap and he goes for carnitas or steak. They’re the right size, filled with the right stuff, and cost about what you’d expect hippie burritos to cost. Go crazy– get yourself some hot sauce. My biggest issue is that they don’t deliver. I know, I know: Foodler, Grub Hub, etc. But I’m still not on the 21st century bandwagon and I want to order directly from my foodsource.

Food is fresh and delicious, but overpriced. Literally got charged $ 1.50 for a few pieces of lettuce to be spread over my nachos. Give me a break.

I was in the mood for a burrito and I stumbled upon this place. Their actual tortillas are chewy, tasty, but not traditional tortillas. I ordered a good sized burrito. I ordered the vegetarian burrito(with squash and corn), without the cheese, and it was good, not great, but definitely good. I was shocked since squash is one of those vegetables that absorbs a lot of flavor. It came out to $ 17 for 2 burritos. Not bad. I took a look at their menu. Their smoothies look a bit weak(no interest in combinations, misty just 2-fruit smoothies). However, they make food QUICKLY and their plates look large(just by observing other people’s plates).

Its been a while since I posted my review and feel it should be updated even though I am reiterating what I said before. I eat a meal here about four times a week, no exaggeration! I love the clean, well prepared food that is always fresh. The menu is simple and well executed, no unhealthy ingredients and wonderful options which allows the customer the ability to add or subtract items in their desired menu choice. I also like the large portions that never let you leave hungry, with prices that are very reasonable. The staff has always been helpful and nice and they also keep the eating area very clean and tidy. I hope this place never leaves Centre Street!

The food looks fresh but lacks flavor. It’s as though they skipped adding any spice, including salt, to everything. There are plenty of salt and pepper shakers and bottles of hot sauce, so I’m guessing the idea is «season it yourself» but any cook worth their, er, salt, would know that it’s not just salt and black pepper that brings out flavor. Pass!

There’s nothing in particular wrong with this place, but I don’t see much reason to go here when there are such great lunch options nearby. The burritos are dry and don’t have much flavor. The prices are nothing special either.

Have to agree with most other people. Decent service, good for the buck. Relatively healthy, which goes a long way. Three star rating because they’re «A-OK.» Just can’t understand why the burritos are not more flavorable. A little salt and fat and maybe some spice would go a long way.

Generous portions — the quesadillas and steak nachos(literally, cheese on top of steak chunks — I swear, solid cubes — on top of tortilla chips) were enormous. Finishing my entire quesadilla was a poor but delicious choice, in retrospect… I do think that the food is a little less flavorful than it could be, but the very flavorful salsa is a nice counterbalance to that(if only they gave more!). Lots of healthy options available.

Food is terrible, service is ultimately worse. One employee is awful; guaranteed to ruin your day(scraggly beard-faced douchebag… perfect description). Others will get your order wrong. Save yourself.

Had a great meal at Purple Cactus after a long day driving around the state of Massachusetts! Opted for the Super Pork burrito bowl and was very satisfied with the portion size and flavor of the pork. Pork is a hit or miss for me at Mexican places, as it is often horribly dry, but this was tender and juicy! For $ 1.50 extra, I think they could have included a bit more guacamole, but I am a fiend when it comes to avocados and can never get enough. It is automatically served with brown rice, so I felt slightly better about the health of it all. Best part? It was cheaper than chipotle. For less that $ 10 I was completely stuffed! Purple Cactus is in a great location in JP. After you gorge yourself with a delicious burrito, walk down the street to Jamaica Pond and walk around it. Beautiful spot!

To be honest, I’m surprised that this place has such positive reviews. I’ve lived in JP for a couple years now, and I’m consistently disappointed by the Purple Cactus’s burritos. I’ve tried a bunch of different variations of chicken burritos and a simple bean and rice burrito with guac, and I just can’t get myself to even finish them these days. The burritos are missing… flavor? I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but I know something important is missing. It’s one of the only options on Centre St if you’re looking for something quick to eat, and you definitely get more bang for your buck than if you were to get a sandwich at City Feed. Service was friendly and fast. That’s enough to make me come back when I’m low on time and supersuper hungry, but overall, the Purple Cactus’s burritos leave much to be desired. Meh.

Oh how I love this place. When I first moved to JP I was coming here weekly. Sadly I’ve cut down(since that got expensive quickly) but I still make a trip here when I’m craving Mexican. All their food is fresh and healthier than your run of the mill Mexican joints. While I do enjoy their burritos my usual go to is their quesadilla. I love that I can customize it with either a wheat or spinach tortilla. Guac and salsa are made in house and the sour cream is also reduced fat. I can eat my food and not feel like I need to lie down after. They also have some breakfast options and smoothies. Overall their menu is great. Perfect for when you want to grab a quick bite or don’t feel like cooking
