I’m just chiming in here to represent the ‘rritos. Now, I’m from Vermont so don’t have much(read: ANY) basis for judging mexican, but I have to say– I had a burrito here and it was delicious. It automatically came with a whole wheat wrap and the sour cream comes in a pre-packaged to-go cup on the side, so it isnt necessarily what you might expect from a restaurante autentica, but let me tell you, the flavor made up for it. I had chicken with guac and cheese. Dame otro ‘rrito!

food was dismal. This is a prime candidate for Kitchen Nightmares TV show. My GF and I were SHOCKED how tasteless everything was. The operators seemed like a husband and wife team, they were about as sweet as can be. However, somewhere along the line this place lost its passion. They dont car about the food, the décor is dated and dusty. Why show up to work everyday just to go through the motions. All arrows point to the fact that they just don’t care anymore. The soul and passion of owning a restaurant and serving customers was been sucked out of this place. Very sad to see, because they were so kind to us, but the food is absolutely dreadful.

Beef tongue tacos. Enough said. Oh, yeah, the homemade chips and salsa are awesome.

Their burritos and chips and salsa are yummy. The place is clean and the staff is very friendly. They also do carry-out which is very convenient!

Brags(+): The asada burrito I got was massive. This makes me very happy. The steak itself was actually pretty nicely seasoned and tender. Overall, was a fan of the burrito. Oh, and for our beers, the glasses were frosted! A bit unnecessary, but a nice touch. Beats(-): The cheese was a dollar extra! What kind of travesty is this? I don’t mind paying an extra buck for guacamole but cheese should be a given. Also, the tablecloths looked kind of cheesy(no pun intended). Variance(~): Good ol’ Mexican music playing in the background. It reminds me of California. I’ll definitely be back to try more of the items!

Tacos el Charro has some of the best tacos I’ve ever had. Their al pastor is as good as it gets and you can’t go wrong with chicken or steak. Crunchy tacos are really the way to go, but if you go for dollar tacos on Wednesday night the soft tacos are a solid bet.

The food is good. Almost wish it wasn’t as good as it was because I really don’t think I can go back. 90 degrees outside. No air conditioning. No ice in the water. Only one ice cube in the Sangria. Took over an hour for 6 tacos, rice and beans to be served when the restaurant was barely half full. If they served this food out of a taco truck you’d have damn good place to go for a quick bite.

I came here on a slow Sunday night, on the late side, and we were one of only two filled tables. A mariachi band comes in and just starts playing! Are you serious?! I felt like I was in a travel channel tourist trap tv spot… except I mean that in the bestest way possible. It’s hard not to fall in love with the homeyness of this place. The Puertorican lady who seems like the manager and hostess is inviting and affectionate. They use cheap china that doesn’t match. I think my mother has the exact rice bowl(maybe it’s just a small bowl, but to an asian person, it’s a rice bowl) that the complementary refried beans came in. I had the mole poblano con pollo and it was very tasty. The only other time I’ve tried mole was at a tex mex place on some enchiladas, and it was really heavy with spices and what i can only guess is chocolate. The mole here is much easier to eat as it is not nearly as rich. It’s delicious even with the white meat chicken, so I can only speculate how amazing it would be if they used dark meat instead.

I love the Sangria here! The lady running it is really nice, interactive, and knows her menu. The food is good and reasonably priced. Good hipster crowd as well. If i had to choose btn this place and Acapulco(right down the street), Id go to Tacos El Charro

first of all — BESTSANGRIAEVER. I usually start with the half liter of sangria then end up getting a second halfie. honestly I can’t put into words how delicious this is… hands down my favorite drink in the universe. ambiance is great. interior/exterior/music/waitstaff = awesome. I’ve been sitting here trying to think of something I don’t love about this place. the only thing I can come up with is the lighting… it’s flourescent and a lil harsh. but that’s really digging for something to complain about. lately I’ve been getting the taco plate with pork. $ 10.50 for 2 tacos, beans, rice and salad. you know when you’re getting full and you think«well I don’t know if it’s worth only taking this much home» so instead you just eat everything? that’s what the portions are like; you get stuffed for cheap. I wish I could take sangria to go. the guacamole and the ice cream dessert are also sensational. it’s worth the trip to JP.

I had my wedding reception there. No joke. It’s that good. Get a combination plate if you like a little bit of everything and you won’t be disappointed. ‘Nuff said.

This place is conveniently located on Centre St. toward my end of JP, between Hyde Square and Jackson Square. Although the owner is Puerto Rican, she serves up some good Mexican food. The flautas are crispy with a nice guacamole sauce, tasty plantains, the cheese and bean tacos(tip: $ 1 tacos on Wednesdays) are great, but my favorite is the mole poblano con pollo. I really, really like their mole sauce! Don’t come here expecting to eat healthy, just get your feed bag on!

In order to get the full experience of the place you have to order something«especial». Going with a taco or a burrito(while awesomely cheap) may not be the thing that blows you away. I highly recommend getting something with one of their ridiculously amazing sauces GUAJILLO or the GREENPEPPER sauce. The Veracruz style Red Snapper is wicked. The burritos are absolutely above average and some of my favorite in the city, but they aren’t what best speaks to the awesomeness of this place. Now the Sangria which is kind of plummy speaks. I’ve brought giant groups here, gotten take out in less than 5 minutes, been on a date(that’s a lie, but i would totally go on a date here) and you can listen to mariachi on Fridays!

I can’t say the food here was bad. I ordered the chicken tacos and they were actually really tasty, but I was still left hungry as hell. And then when I thought about it, it really wasn’t anything special. I mean, the tacos were just chicken and onions in a tortilla. The only thing they did right was make sure the meat was still tasty and not dry like most places end up screwing it over. I’ll still give this place another try though.

Tacos El Charo is gross. Sorry I want to like it but my stomach and my conscience just wont let me. I went to Tacos back when it was in imminent danger of closing it’s doors for good. I wanted to support this local eatery and I love mexican food. It was mid winter, the place was freezing(i dont think they had enough money to pay for heat) me and my friends didnt even take our winter coats off. Some people say the décor is homey and charming, i say it’s tacky, tattered and kind of sad. The black and white tile floor makes the place even colder. Our waitress was really nice, but seemed not to speak even one word of english. I’m not really complaining about this(well maybe a little) I mean I could learn some more spanish so I can ask about my order or make changes to it, but this(at the time) was near impossible to do in English only. I fumbled through my order and we received our food. My enchilladas had a black and curly in them! not kidding, looked like a pube just sitting right on top. Possibly my inability to order made me an annoying customer, deemed to have a pube in my food? Just kidding, but however… there was a hair in my food. I told our waitress and she brought me a new order but didnt discount the bill. I was a waitress for two years and you better believe that i serve somebody food with a hair in it… they are getting EVERYTHING for free. Hair aside, the food at Tacos el Charo just isnt very good. Been here a few times and have come to the decision that the food is bad. Everything is loaded with cheap and greasy cheese(not that i dont enjoy that sometimes) but the food just tastes old. The refried beans look and taste like they’ve been sitting in a fridge for two weeks. I’m scared of their food handling, and would bet on getting food poisoning if I ate here again. All that withstanding, it wasnt the worst dining experience ive had(that would be Acapulco, down the street)… The staff at Tacos are really nice, it’s inexpensive and it does have it’s «charms.» There are much, much better options in the area for good mexican and spanish food, try La Pupusa… much more authentic and not all the grease!

I could have saved many people a bad experience at one of my favorite mexican places in the world! there are 5 things you should get at Tacos El Charro. everything else you should skip. but what they do well they do REALLY well. seriously, these are the best tacos al pastor I have EVER had in my life. better than the ones I had in LA! so for that alone they get 5 stars. but here’s what you need: 1. TACOSALPASTOR!!!(or bean & cheese tacos for the vegheads) 2. chicken enchalada with mole sauce. dont fuck around. 3. flautas. make love to the guac. 4. maduros. diabetes here we come! 5. fresh salsa with fried tortilla chips. salt and sweet. DONOT get a friggin burrito. shame on you! in fact, dont get anything else besides what I just listed, and I guarantee you will have a great meal. I *could* definitely dock 1 star for price — its pricey for what it is — but hey, white people are taking over centre street so do I blame them for jacking up the prices? not one bit. everybody’s gotta make a living… PS. ANNA’S SUCKS!!! I wanna bitchslap all the gringos that dont appreciate some good $ 1 bean and cheese tacos. for shaaaaaame!!!

I love this place. I don’t know why. The food is good but not amazing. Perhaps I’m just a sucker for any restaurant that sells me Coke in a can. But I can say that it’s simple, tasty, inexpensive and totally lacking in pretension. I’ve gone here several times for take-out. The plastic tableclothes, sequined sombraros, and tvs set to the hispanic news station produce an environment that makes me feel like I’ve entered someone’s slightly disheveled dining room. The woman behind the counter is awesomely kind, and somehow my interactions with her always result in leaving a hefty tip. And just in defense of Tacos el Charro, and in response to a previous comment – I’ve never felt my outward queerness negatively affect my experience here.

I’ve been to Anna’s and Boca for a quick burrito or two, but I was very happy to use Roberto C’s recommendation to try Tacos el Charro in JP. We got there around 430 so it was pretty empty but we had a great experience! We chose to dine in, and were immediatly seated with some chips and salsa. I wished the salsa was hotter(in spice and temperature) and the chips warmer, but it was a nice day so I wasn’t complaining. We both had burritos. Not even five minutes had passed and we were served our food. I had the bean and cheese which was great! So big but chock full of beans and cheese. Plus it was served with a side of sour cream. I though it was pretty dry at first, but after I poured some of that salsa on top it tasted moist. The bf had the chicken version and he liked his too. Prices were pretty moderate, given the amount of food you get. The owner is also REALLY nice… he was able to give us good directions and recommendations of things to do in the area. If I make it back to JP, I’d stop in again.
