When you walk into Café Lola you immediately feel a sense of comfort. The intimate setting works nicely for a dinner with friends, biz meeting, or date night. Our server with flare for Southern hospitality greeted us with a smile and warmth that was palpable. Once again, I immediately felt comfortable and ready to dive into this tasty looking menu. After being offered the Tuesday night tapas special($ 22 for unlimited tapas and wine for a couple of hours… WHAAAT!!!), we decided to go with the gumbo(Fat Tuesday) and roasted red pepper tomato bisque. Needless to say the soups were fantastic. The tomato bisque was bursting with fresh flavor and substance… all other tomato soups should take note of Café Lola’s approach. Next, all 3 of us ordered the Chilean seabass which has a subtle Asian flare(miso glaze). All 3 of our plates were licked clean, and we were floating afterwards. Here I am writing this review 3 days later and I still have this dish on the mind. I HIGHLY recommend this little place to any and all who are in the Johnson City area. Well done, Lola!

We only discovered this little Gem about 3 weeks ago… and have been there already 5 times! The atmosphere and décor would suggest tiny portions for high prices… but NO! We were pleasantly surprised that the food not only tastes good, it’s reasonably priced and who can refuse the bottomless Mimosas on Sundays? While the menu isn’t very large, it is diverse and the Chef knows his stuff. The steak comes out exactly as you order it. The staff is always friendly. I’ve also met a friend there for a business lunch during the week and wasn’t disappointed. My reservation for coming Sunday is already in the books :)

Hilariously pretentious. While visiting family in the city, I dropped by, and this establishment is exactly as I expected. It is populated by self-aware people, speaking quite loudly and posing for each new entrant, until they are deemed unworthy. The raves about the interior are puzzling. It is in a strip mall, and the interior is one small room, with clunky furniture. There is absolutely nothing unique about the place. The week prior, I visited nearby Asheville, NC, which is the home of dozens of amazing restaurants and bars. There, I found truly interesting patrons — quite welcoming. This is definitely a small fish in a small pond type of place(although the fish mistakenly believe themselves to be big). The food is adequate — the service is not. Dear Hostess, do NOT approach a patron with the words, «Is there something that I can do for you?»(Note: I was dressed nicely, and quite polite. WHY did she think that I was walking in the door?)

This place was awesome! Looked for a new place on Unilocal while in johnson city and bam! Decided to swing by with a pal of mine. Server was polite and professional. Price was on point(Maybe because of the lunch time menu.) Ordered the Panini with ham and salami!

We came by here on a whim while in JC, and we’re really impressed, from the décor to the service to the food. We stopped in for Sunday brunch and got bottomless mimosas, which were served with our kind of ratio(50⁄50 but a little on the bubbly side :). We got the Croque Madame and Panini, both of which were delicious with a side of tomato basil soup. Definitely somewhere we look forward to patronizing again!

I discovered Café Lola shortly after it opened and I moved to Johnson City. I was really pleasantly surprised to find an intimate yet slightly upscale independently owned restaurant in JC. The couple that opened Café Lola relocated from NYC and really have an eye for the small details that make for a quality meal and enjoyable dining experience. They are very enthusiastic about using quality local ingredients in the seasonal menu. What really got me excited is that they have wine pairings and flights of wine you can order and they are constantly rotating them. The bartenders that I have had have been really knowledgeable about wine and enthusiastic about sharing new favorites they have discovered. I really rave about the chef which I believe has been there for most of the time the restaurant has been open. My favorite dinner dish is the Miso glazed Sea Bass — it is really very special. The homemade Lasagna is also really amazing. I enjoy their appetizers like the cheese plate or warm brie. but also the Herb Cashews are really great. I also love Sunday brunch. A mimosa with a breakfast Panini or mexican taco are favorites. I am thankful for a few very unique gems in JC which make dining special. I consider Lola to be one of my favorites and it is always nice to visit an old friend.

Tucked away in a shopping plaza, we found this cute little wine bar. We walked in seated ourselves and were greeted right away. Our server was very accommodating. The food, wine and dessert were very good. We will be returning soon. This would be a great place for a girls night out.

Don’t let the location in a strip mall fool you! This place is really good. I took my mother for her 84th birthday on a road trip from Ohio to Georgia. We had 4 tapas plates and 2 salads. The warm Brie with mango chutney and fresh berries was smooth, creamy and delicious. The bacon wrapped dates were salty, sweet and decadent! The warm goat cheese salads were good… but I like my veggies chopped up smaller. The crab cakes were surprisingly good for being in TN. The shrimp with paprika were tasty, but not very big. A free birthday dessert of Crème Brûlée topped off the evening. Reasonably priced, cozy atmosphere(except for the really loud woman with the over the top southern drawl who appeared to be over enjoying her multiple drinks)! I’d go back if I was in the area for sure!

In a city full of chain restaurants, Café Lola is a life-saver. The bar is fully stocked with reasonably priced good wine and the menu is pretty extensive. Don’t let the desolate mall deceive you. Inside, the place is inviting and welcoming. Overall the food was prepared well. I opted for a fish dish; it was seasoned well and cooked to perfection. The sauces that came with it, however, was a bit on the heavy-handed side. There are surprisingly creative dishes on the menu. Some are prepared with pretty daring ingredients. The service is great. The staff is friendly and efficient and took care of everything I needed. I’ll be back to try some of the other items on the menu soon. I suspect this restaurant will likely get another star from me once I get my hands on some of those starters!

I so wanted to do 5 of 5 stars but only landed on 4; more on that later. The tapas appetizer of bacon wrapped plums was outstanding. Do not miss this on your visit. The warm goat cheese salad with roasted walnuts was delicious. Followed by the seared ahi tuna with jalapenos and avocado, it was a great meal. The service was quick and friendly. The only downside, and the reason for the four, was that I just got one glass of water. One glass of water for the full meal with no offer to refill. Other than that it would’ve been a perfect five of five stars.

Service. 1st time here and sitting at the bar. Took 10 minutes to order a drink. 10 minutes later still no drink. That’s 20 minutes for a thirsty person and there were only 4 other folks sitting at the bar. Enough said. I’m sitting at the bar for a reason. I want a drink(and a good meal). I left and got both elsewhere.

This improbably located(in a strip mall, in Johnson City) wine bar/bistro is a constant delight. Wine, tapas and entrees have been creative and yummy the three times I’ve been here over the last five years. Tonight I had scallops *in their shells* — unusual and very festive — and steak au poivre, perfect. The staff is unfailingly welcoming and friendly to a weary solo traveler. Tennessee hospitality and divine cooking, with a global wine selection. Six stars.
