I’m not a huge dessert fan, but sometimes my sweet tooth craves other decadences besides ice cream. Napoleon’s is the in-house bakery arm of the Zippy’s restaurant chain. Some are run 24/7, but this location isn’t. The menu is very extensive — cakes, pies, donuts, danishes, malasadas, andagi… DESSERTS: Napples — This is their most popular selection. Its a light and super flaky turnover with a sweet filling. My favorite is the apple Napple. The filling tastes similar to what you’d find in McD’s apple pies, but on a more homemade scale. They also make other flavors like blueberry, cherry, coconut, and chocolate. Andagi — The popular Okinawan-style donut is about the size of a tennis ball. Homemade versions are usually smaller. The batter is slightly sweet and creamy tasting, and isn’t topped with anything. It’s supposed to come out with a slightly crisp crust and moist cake-like texture inside. Eat them hot if you can. Malasadas — Their version is actually pretty damn tasty! The Portuguese donut is shaped like an oval ball, dusted with white sugar, and has a chewy texture. Get it plain(my fave,) or filled with vanilla or chocolate pudding. Chantilly Cake — This is a Hawaii specialty. It’s a chocolate cake with a unique beige-colored frosting that’s not overly sweet and has a hint of saltiness. Reeeeally good! Haupia Chocolate Cake — My dad loved this to the end. Chocolate and coconut combined to make a little Hawaiian baby. Strawberry Gelatin Cream Cheese Square — Its a graham cracker crust with a slightly heavy cream cheese middle topped with a thin layer of strawberry Jello. It looks pretty and tastes even prettier. TIP: If you’re eating in Zippy’s, order the bakery items directly from the bakery counter which is slightly cheaper than the restaurant menu. OVERALL: Great selection, fresh, good pricing.
