Botton Line: Good traditional take out sushi at a reasonable cost. Stop #1 on my Big Island favorite ono grinds tour. I’ve been coming here for years after I got lost trying to find the Kona Brewery. Ha ha It’s in the nondescript strip mall next to the brewery. On the mainland, Japanese family run, traditional sushi restaurants are a dying breed. Unfortunately replaced by designer/specialty rolls and sushi boats. What I love about this little place is that it is run by a nice Japanese couple in a shop smaller than most bedrooms. In Kona, maybe one of the most prolific ahi fisheries in the world, it is ironic that sushi/sashimi is limited to very expensive restaurants, lower priced places with inconsistent quality and supermarkets. Kyotoya is a little gem which produces quality sushi at grocery store prices. Yes, it is not the fanciest sushi and there are only 2 outdoor tables, but the fish is good quality and WAY better than grocery store sushi. I noticed they have added some designer rolls in order to keep up with trends. No worries, just don’t add any of those stupid sushi boats. LOL Get some sushi to go, get a growler of IPA from Kona Brewery and head to the beach for a picnic. Just doesn’t get better than that. This is one of the healthiest stops on the tour, after this one it gets«greasy»(in a good way but more calories). Tip: stick with the traditional sushi… futomaki, tekka maki, and nigiri, that’s what they do best. It’s cash only.

Wonderful sushi shop! They are quick and friendly. The sushi is always fresh and up to par. Perfect for my lunch break! I love the outdoor space to dine. Great location for parking and in central Kona town. I can’t say enough great things about them. I’ve been coming here since they opened. Never disappointed

Similar to market sushi, only the rice to fish ratio is crazy. In one 8 piece roll with ahi, cucumber and avocado there was probably 2 cups of cooked rice. Portions are huge. Cash only!

Cash only, just so you know. Pretty good sushi for a very good price. Generous portions, good quality ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and a variety of options will help you walk away satisfied. There is extremely limited seating, so expect to order and take out. Hey, the beach is just a block away! Can always take your food and eat it at Old A’s or something. Favorites include the Kona roll, tuna cucumber, and avocado crab(imitation crab FYI). Great for a quick lunch or snack.

Quick, cheap, good. They serve healthy portions and display an attention to detail on par with Japanese standards. If I lived here Id go back at least once a week.

Great hole in the wall sushi place. Sushi is very traditional. You won’t find some of the newer type of sushi but that isn’t a bad thing. They make the best Futomaki by far! You have to try it!

I love this place for sushi!!! My favorite is the spicy tekka roll and the phila roll!!! Spicy tekka roll is delicious and simple, ahi tuna and a spicy chili sauce, no weird mayo sauce. Phila roll is smoked salmon, avocado and cream cheese. The owners are very sweet. This is a two person operation so if there is a little wait(10 – 15 min) it is SO worth it!

Value for money. Very convenient location, and yet very discreet. I found it by accident looking for a quit snack before taking cruise with Body Glove, whose office is in the same shopping center. They made my Avocado Salmon Sashimi in a jiffy and it was divine. A no non-sense attitude. Unpretentious plastic chairs outdoors, so you know you’re only paying for good food. And it even sports a glimpse of the ocean from its deck. If i was living here, i would make it «my sushi place» where i go with friends every tuesday.

A little known hole in the wall, owned and operated by a husband/wife from Japan, so sushi is authentic and delicious. No indoor seating and limited outdoor tables. Lots of parking-bring cash, because thats all they want
