What is not to love about this place? Great food and great owners! I’ve had almost every single item on the menu and I keep coming back for more, sometimes even twice in a day. A little shack in the middle of a little mall area. I’m going there right now…

Great food and nice owners. Landed at the airport around 1230 and didn’t get car rental until 2:10. So j told my BF that we won’t make it to this place cuz it closes at 230. At 233 we arrived and they were still open and were super cool and friendly. They still served us. The bowls were really nicely made. I got the original Tokyo chirashi and the BF got half tuna and half salmon poke I think with a shrimp tempura. They put a sweet sauce and mayo on top of his and I think it’s too much. But mine is traditional so no sauce except soy sauce that I can dip my fish in it. Awesome first meal in Kona and we sat by benches right by the small shack. While we sip on sweet guava juice and listen to locals sing and play the ukulele. it was just perfect.

If you like high quality fresh fish, a mixture of authentic and more modern or local style Japanese, you have to try this place. All they serve is chirashi bowls and they are bomb! We had a rainbow chirashi and a half salmon half ahi spicy tuna chirashi and both were amazing. If you get the traditional type bowls the fish in these is just like ordering nigiri at a high end sushi place, expertly sliced fresh fish. If you order the spicy or modern type bowls the fish is more like a smaller cubed poke. Oh and the shrimp tempura they added to the spicy chirashi was the best tempura shrimp I have eaten in Hawaii. Prepared exactly how it’s supposed to, very soft and not by the color of it you can see its not thrown is a deep fryer used to cook French fries and whatever else. Very impressed! I personally would like a little less rice and a little more fish but for $ 10 including a bowl of miso how can you ask for more! Overall the experience was great and I will be going again and again!

Came here looking for sushi after reading previous reviews. We eat a lot of sushi, and enjoy chirashi back home in Seattle. We do not need atmosphere, and appreciate good value. For less than $ 50 we got 4 bowls, 4 miso, and 4 tempura shrimp. We ate at a picnic table and had some of the best fish we’ve had near kona. Edomae bowl full of beautiful sashimi, bara bowl had lovely fish, good veg and avocado. Kids had dynamite bowl and spicy tuna, both excellent. Can not find fault!

I was vacationing in Hilo but took a day to visit the Kona side. Stopped by here since I read the great reviews, and the owners were wonderful. They explained what chirashi is and showed pictures of the different bowls. The bowls are colorful and have so much detail in them. We ordered the Samurai and Volcano chirashi and they were really good. I wasn’t too hungry when I ordered, but it was so good I ended up eating the whole thing. Amazing little stand, and if you find yourself in Kona, stop by there!

I love their chirashi bowls and the price is very reasonable but I will not go back. They are too make their own time. the 2nd time I went too early I heard them inside and decided to kill 30 min but when I went back had a sign that they are closed for the day. Jus now my daughter went at 4:30(suppose to open from 4) and a sign again that they will open at 5. I will never go there. waste of time no phone number to check if they are open or not. As they say on the shark tank. For that reason I’m out!

chef Jiro and Jasmine offer their hearts and soul in their delicious food. The spicy tuna bowl not only looked beautiful but tasted fresh. All the flavors just made sense. If I lived here I would be a regular customer. Many blessings to them and hope to be back soon!

The food quality and presentation is superb!!! The owners are the nicest people. If you are in town, it’s a place you need to try. There is no other place like this on the island.

Unique blend of taste, art, and value We had stumbled on this charming business when we were browsing through the Longs and Sack n’ Save shopping center in Kona. This place has a steady growing group of Unilocal fans and for good reasons — beautifully prepared sushi-bowls with very fresh quality ingredients and unbelievably low prices. All made and cooked to order by a wonderful couple who have a loving passion to introduce this tasty cuisine to people. The business is in a small, walk up booth — you walk up, give your order to the nice lady, and the elderly gentleman will then prepare your bowl from scratch. Depending on the flow of business it can take 10 – 15 minutes but there is plenty of seating in the outdoor benches and tables. Each bowl is lined with a generous bed of perfectly cooked sushi rice and then topped and scattered with your sushi ingredients. I had the bowl with California roll type fixings of snow crab, ripe Alvarado, and cucumber, topped with a couple of tempura shrimp. My wife had the salmon teriyaki bowl with some very fresh salmon in a light teriyaki sauce. Each bowl seems individually«crafted» with sushi ingredients and sauces so it’s almost like a work of art. Bowls include a cup of miso soup for a perfect meal. You can eat right there as the shopping center has many shaded tables and benches or take this back to your condo or hotel room. Credit cards accepted and they’re open Tues — Saturday, lunch hours and from 4 — 8 pm. One of the best casual dining options in the Kona downtown area, IMHO.

Bottom Line: Great take out traditional and specialty/designer sushi bowls at a reasonable cost. The bowls are a work of art and taste as good as they look. 10th and last stop for my 2016 tour of the best ono grinds takes us back to where we began, a mom and pop Japanese sushi take out joint in Kona. My oh my, we just love this place. Chirashi Sushi By Jiro, which I renamed«Jiro Dreams of Chirashi», is a cute little shack in the Longs Pharmacy parking lot. It’s run by a really nice Japanese couple with lots of aloha. Crazy that he gets all these great reviews and probably doesn’t know what Unilocal is. Chirashi is a bowl of sushi rice with sashimi and other stuff on top. Jiro has blended the current specialty/designer sushi roll craze to a rice bowl format. He has exceptional creativity and artistic presentation with his chirashi bowls. Unfortunately I am a traditional sushi guy and have some disdain for trendy specialty sushi rolls. I asked Jiro if he could make me a traditional tekka don, ahi sashimi on a bowl of rice. It isn’t on the menu but was happy to make it for me. I got 3 shrimp tempura a la carte with the tekka don and the total bill was around $ 15. It takes him about 15 minutes to make a bowl because each is a work of art and he has to cut the fish. My tekka don came with kamaboko, tamago, ginger, mushrooms, cucumber, nori, wasabi and takuan and easily the prettiest sushi bowl I have ever seen. My wife and I ate it for dinner and OMG, so ono. High quality ahi sashimi which was cut perfectly. This is one of those places which has something for every body and a place you don’t want to miss. For those who can’t eat or don’t like raw fish, there are bowls with shrimp tempura(Samuri Chirashi), unagi(Unagi & Lani Hau Chirashi), and smoked salmon(Philadelphia Chirashi). He had some cooked fish specials on the day I was there also(Teri Ahi & Teri Salmon). This place exudes Japanese charm. I will be back for sure. Check it out. Tip: It takes him about 15 minutes to make a bowl and it gets busy during the lunch hour. Take a walk around the mall or sit on the nearby benches. It’s worth the wait.

I remember back when this place was a tiny little sushi stand. This place is definitely not that place and I mean it in the best way possible. I’ve eaten my chirashi don from there probably about a dozen times now and never been disappointed, not once. The fish is delicious, the sauces compliment the food without overpowering, and the miso soup is a very nice touch. My only complaint to and I’m not even sure it is a legitimate complaint is that the popularity is going out of control. Lunchtime demand has seriously picked up and can lead to a lengthy wait sometimes. Nevertheless, I’m glad the place is starting to get the well-deserved recognition.

The reviews don’t lie. I’m in Hawaii and this was the first place I wanted to try from all the review and random website write ups. Get any bowl and add a shrimp tempura.

Oh. My. Lord. This dish was one of my top 5 foods ever. Jiro is an artist, and the woman up front was lovely. I don’t know how one can put so much love and flavor in under 10 minutes, but it was accomplished! Go.

This is like the best chirashi i have had! The fish is sooooo fresh, and i usually don’t like tuna. but their tuna melted in your mouth… the sauce and all the accompaniment was a good balance… wish there was a bit more fish though: P

Visited Jiro for the first time. Bowls that broke da’ mout and not your pocketbook. Had the Samurai Chirashi Bowl and it was sooo good!!! And miso soup, perfection in a bowl. If you haven’t tried eating here yet, you’re missing a whole lot of goodness for your belly.

Family owned business in a small kiosk in the heart of the Longs shopping center. I was visiting from Oahu and saw a friend post a pic of her sushi bowl here and knew immediately, I have to go there. Thank goodness, I made it 2 mins before the lunch close. The owners are the sweetest couple ever. Really friendly and just sincere passionate people and it shows in the food. I had a really hard time deciding on what bowl to get. They all sounded amazing! Finally decided on the rainbow and I sure am glad I did. It was delicious! The idea of sushi rice in a bowl didn’t sound super appetizing but they put a tasty sauce throughout and it was fantastic! The bowls are a great price and come with miso soup. Highly recommend!

Located in a strip mall across Long’s drugs this unassuming kiosk dishes out some of the best tasting chirashi bowl in the Kona area. I had the opportunity to try their bowls and it was fresh and full of flavors. The owners Jasmine and Jiro were too nice. Bring lots of patience with you it can be busy and takes between 10 – 15 minutes to prep a bowl. Each bowl comes w miso soup. Price is very reasonable that won’t break the bank.

Wow… A couple years ago I decided I would not write a review until I have eaten somewhere a few times and had a great experience. I must also say I have an extremely sensitive system, ah, if you get my drift. There are several restaurants I have eaten at in Kona and I was not thrilled with the consequences. I live in town so I walk most places, which make my «difficulty» with some places very uncomfortable… Yeah… Thanks to Unilocal I found this little tiny place between Long’s Drugs and Sak&Save. It has outdoor seating only but I usually walk there and walk home, I eat it at home. I have now eaten here a few times and let me tell you something. It is DIVINE!!! Thanks to other Unilocalers I have tried the Volcano Chirashi bowl and I haven’t been able to to move past that. I LOVE ripe avocado and I LOVE spicy tuna. This bowl is so finely made and well crafted. Avocados make me mad because it seems I am always buying one not quite right, here I get a perfect avocado. The chirashi bowl is like a poke bowl, which was always my favorite, until I read all the Unilocal reviews and decided I needed to try this place. I have been a LONG time customer of You Make the Roll, I love their spicy tuna UFO bowl. This Chirashi bowl has the ingredients of the UFO bowl but made with more love and attention, more detail. I also love Umeke’s spicy ahi. I love Suisan’s in Hilo too. I think Chirashi Sushi by Jiro is my new found favorite of all. Really amazing. Truly fresh. Very affordable.

Located across the parking lot from Longs Drugs, don’t let the appearance scare you away. It’s a small little hut that only offers takeout, but the food is delicious. We had a volcano chirashi bowl and a samurai chirashi bowl. Both were outstanding and great values. Portion size is large and it even came with a miso soup. In addition to great food, Jasmine and Chef Jiro provided excellent customer service. We will definitely be back again and on future trips, I wouldn’t be surpised if they expanded or moved to a larger location!
