We actually ate at the ramen place next door, same owners, can’t remember the name, starts with a K! The mochiko chicken was great. We ordered the tempura shrimp ramen, big serving, tasty. Service was ok.

I always drive by this place on the way home and finally stopped by. Looks like a quick fast food Chinese deli, but you can order almost anything. Had the dry beef chow fun. Wouldn’t say it was the best and wouldn’t say it was the worst. What can you expect for a Chinese restaurant in Kalaheo above a Pizza Hut.

It’s the best Chinese food on the island. That’s not saying much because there are practically no Chinese restaurants, but I was pretty satisfied. They have very nice staff members and if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, this is the place to go. They do take out and the service is efficient an fast.

I give it three stars only because it has mochiko chicken. However, it is way too breaded and unhealthy most of the time. But if you subscribe to the notion that more for less is better… you can try here. The staff is friendly enough, and in a pinch you can put something in your stomach for way less than any place around. The transaction cost on your body, though, might be prohibitive.

I believe No 1 Chinese BBQ restaurant is the only Chinese Restaurant I saw in the island of Kauai. The drive from our resort was only 15 minutes so not that bad. I think this place is one of the places that don’t close too early. This place is located in the second floor of a professional building that included a dentist office, insurance office, an Italian restaurant and some other businesses. Once we walked in the restaurant, you can tell this is the type of to go order place. There were probably 6 – 8 tables in the room and only my husband and I eating at the restaurant. We opted for the Hawaiian mixed plate which included, Spam, Korean BBQ beef, Macaroni Salad, Chicken Katsu and rice. I believe the plate was under $ 8.00 and they give you a large portion of each item. I ended up not finishing everything. The mixed plate was a okay. It came out a little luke warm and not too hot. I think at that point, I was done with Hawaiian mixed plates with that many items for awhile.

It’s not really authentic Chinese food but if you live in the area(Kalaheo/Lawai) then you’re hard pressed for anything better. That being said, I think it’s pretty decent food for a good value. The food is fairly fresh on the hot line because it’s a popular destination. I’m pretty sure there’s MSG but whatevs. I like the beef with broccoli, eggplant with beef, and the ubiquitous orange chicken(I know, I know… it’s almost criminal). My husband likes the coconut shrimp but I found it too sweet for my tastes. The fried rice and chow mein are standard and unremarkable either way. They take to-go orders and the girl behind the counter hustles so service is as fast as it could be.

Not too many options in Kalaheo for fast food so… Had the oyster chicken cake noodle, generous portion, standard chinese MSG fare. Got what I was expecting. Food was good, I ate the whole plate myself then felt sick. Thats what I get for being a pig. I don’t know if I would eat off of their ready made pick two choice line. although I try to avoid those as much as possible anyways. what else you goin get in kalaheo? a $ 30 pizza.

I know a lot of people who dig this place but I can’t handle it. I used to love Panda Express or even Patti’s Chinese Kitchen on Oahu that serves heated food on counters protected with a plastic or glass window but No. 1 on Kauai makes me sick. I’ve only tried it twice, once in Lihue long ago and recently in Kalaheo. The only thing I found edible was the coconut shrimp but even that I could only handle a few at most. The food there has flavor, I’m sure with all the msg added to it, but the nausea I feel afterward just isn’t worth the visit. If I must have Chinese, I’d rather hit up Garden Island BBQ in Lihue, which even there can be sketchy unless you get the food fresh and hot! Prices are cheap at No. 1 and they serve platters for parties, so it’s reasonable, but I’d rather nourish my body with good eats if I’m going to go out and pay for it. Another great alternative would be Hanamaulu Café in Hanapepe.

i’d drive further to get food from this no. 1 restaurant. took out 2 plates last night for dinner. had to wait 5 minutes for some more fried rice, but at least i knew it was fresh! the woman behind the counter was very friendly and inviting when i walked in. their establishment is very neat and clean. they have tables inside so you can sit down and enjoy your meal there, or take it to go. the plate lunch menu looked pretty good. i stuck with the hot prepared stuff. i got the mochiko chicken and coconut shrimp and my dad got the duck and kung pao beef. i really like the coconut shrimp. it doesn’t exactly taste like coconut, but it’s fried shrimp in this cream sauce. very goooooood. the mochiko chicken was crispy and good as well. the duck was veryyyy tasty & delicious! i wish they have given more than just 3 pieces, though. didn’t try the beef kuz i don’t particularly care for spicy. they take cash & credit, unlike their other locations which makes it really convenient for the customer. i’ll definitely be hitting up this place again!
