Good selection of construction materials. I also like that they carry Craftsman tools. The cashiers are friendly. I wish the store wasn’t so dirty.

I made the mistake of supporting local business. Brought in an old Shindaiwa trimmer I had tuned up but could not get consistency from. Kid told me he would try to fine tune the carburetor and he would call me within 3 weeks. Instead, after a month, I went in to find I owed over $ 100 for repairs I never authorized on an old machine; $ 90/​hour for uncertified labor, $ 43 for a carb kit (internet price $ 22), spark plug and fuel filter replaced after less than 10 hours, and $ 9 for two grommets, which have nothing to do with operation. They did not even have the decency to provide me with the invoice or parts supposedly replaced when I asked for it. Since the air filter and spark plug were less than 10 hours old and entirely serviceable, I could use them as spares. DO NOT TRUST THIS BUSINESS EXCEPT WITH POSTED PRICING. Double check any «deals» or advertising small print.

Poor service (unless you are a regular contractor), bad (wrong) advice, arrogant attitudes, high prices. There are much better hardware stores on the windward side. I wrote a 100% truthful review and Unilocal put it in the not recommended list.

Came in for a key was ignored for about 10 min staff just pushing me aside so I stood there and finally a guy came and helped me out and he was very helpful. It’s a good place to go just not when they are busy…

Like many other reviewers, I’ve passed this store numerous times going to and from my place to our friends’ house. I never stopped to think it was a hardware store. Truly my loss, as they carry an incredible variety of my shopping weakness: Makita tools.
In fact, it was the Makita rep who brought me to this store. After I clashed with the folks at Woodcraft of Honolulu in Kalihi over whether, as an Authorized Service Center, they would repair a warrantied Makita tool not purchased at their store, the Makita rep suggested I could try another repair center like Yamashiros. (Yeah, even the Makita Representative could not convince Woodcraft to honor the Makita warranty.)
Anyhow, I’m glad I stopped in. My tool is awaiting repair, but meanwhile, I shopped. And boy did I shop. They have the biggest variety of Makita tools I’ve seen in Hawaii. The repair guy, Mike, went out of his way to explain the differences between each of the tools and offered his suggestions on which ones to buy first.
I really liked this store & despite the difficulty of getting to these independently owned stores (i.e. Mom & Pop), this one does have something extra to offer. As an added bonus, I can vouch for the fact that most of their prices are same as you’d get online or better.

If City Mill doesn’t have what you need then check this place out. The service is friendly and helpful so you can be a little clueless about what you’re trying to attempt, like maybe fixing some bad dryrot. And if you do your homework using google first then even better.
I like supporting the local mom and pops and the medium stores like City Mill… better service than the big box places (names withheld to protect the innocent).

Excellent customer service as soon as I walked into the store. An employee greeted me by asking me if I needed help finding anything. I told them what I needed and he found it for me. Another employee helped me gather information about another item I was looking at.
I definitely recommend this place to get your hardware tools! Ace the helpful place! They really stick to their motto! I love it!

My first time patronizing this place. I’ve passed this place like a 1000 times every time I’m in Kaneohe, but was totally unaware that this was a hardware store.
I don’t know why… but for some reason, I thought Yamashiro’s was like a Mid-​Pac Lumber business where they sold stuff strictly for building structures.
I was looking for some supplies with my co-​worker as we were doing a job at the windward mall shopping center. We were drilling out a safe, and busted a screw in the safe as were trying to breach the safe.
Lucky for us, Yamashiro’s had exactly what we needed to finish our job.
The nice lady clerk on the floor was very helpful, & friendly. I must say, this place kinda reminds me of a City Mill, where the staff is also very helpful whenever you need to ask questions about a project.

want to support mom an pop shops, but places like this make returning items such a chore that it’s hard to justify spending a bit more money.

There are actually people here that will help you without having to search all over the store for someone how knows something! They just don’t make hardware stores like this anymore where service is just as important as the stuff they sell. Ask for Pattie she helpped me.

This family owned business has been around for decades and provides the Windward side with everything it needs for home improvement. Contractors rely on this place for their supplies while others come here for whatever they need to enhance their abodes with.
The staff are genuine and helpful and the store is more than just a hardware store. You can find little things here and there you never thought of and they even sometimes have fresh produce and unique snacks for purchase.
All in all, a very convenient and handy place to go to for whatever you need.
