Great space. Decent coffee. They’re using PT’s beans and the espresso was well made. Terrible tea — we explained to them that the tea would not steep. This happens when the water is not hot enough — test it yourself with a teabag in cold water. They were very dismissive about it. Bad attitude — I can deal with surly café staff but not a customer-is-always-wrong attitude. There’s nothing worse than getting sub-standard food/drink and being treated like an ass for complaining. There’s plenty of better experiences to be had in Kansas City at cafes that take pride in their products and services.

Srsly I may be crazy, but they have the best Americano in town,(update) not crazy I just snagged one at another major shop and it had me cursing/mea culp-ing to the last drop. Save for the FS Javanaut is one of the only places that seems to have outdoor seating in the sun(or shade) all day long, so stick around for your re-fill and get a dank face tan while polishing off Middlemarch. OK this is old angry business and NOT directed at Javanaut, but is there a reason Flat White ins’t on the menu anywhere and I have to go to WH(psych) if I want a GDGT Kombucha, while worthless Oranginas are available everywhere, I mean this isn’t fall 2009*. Please tell me I’m mistaken. *joke

Javanaut, formally known as The Crave Café, is a remarkably quaint café located in Westport. Set up within a bright yellow house, you walk in the front door and are instantly greeted by the marvelous aroma of fresh coffee. Upon further investigation, there are stairs that led up to multiple floors with different rooms each with tables and chairs — mini hideaways where you can read, study, and of course, drink coffee. The Javanaut provides excellent service; the baristas are very personal and can easily make anyone smile even if you are having a bad day. The Javanaut is very confident in their coffee expertise and they have no problem denouncing the name of Starbucks. They have every right to do so. Javanaut has a supreme menu with creative drinks such as peppermint chai and blood orange chai. Tired of the same old cup of coffee at your local Starbucks? Visit Javanaut: lounge in a remodeled bedroom, drink an excellent brew and enjoy the friendly service that Javanaut consistently provides.

There’s nothing like a cozy coffeehouse that’s an actual *house.* I’m so glad we have a few of these in KC. I’m also incredibly glad that we have so many indie coffeehouses to choose from and that Starbucks is barely a significant presence in the city, proper. Given a choice, I’d never pick Starbucks! Yesterday, I was so happy to hole up in a small room(of my very own for most of the day!) on the second floor of Javanaut. No worries about grabbing that elusive table that is near an outlet, for there are plenty here. Let’s not forget the *working* free wifi. Sure, the décor could be a little…*more*(more couches, more tables, more mismatched chairs even. I.e. stuff those rooms with stuff!), but that’s just a personal preference for the shabby chic type of vibe. They are halfway there(the shabby!) The baristas I encountered yesterday were nothing but pleasant, I might add, and made my drinks just fine. A few more tempting food options(energy bars in the display case just don’t do it for me) would be most appreciated!

There is no shortage of good coffee along the 39th St. «Restaurant Row.» There is, of course, the ubiquitous Starbucks. Then on the KS side at the corner with Rainbow, there is Drink a Latte, which is a good choice for lunch. Starbucks and nearby Javanaut have nothing to offer for lunch. But Javanaut has — its building. It is a two story old house with many rooms on both floors. When I want to spend time with a computer and some coffee, I go there. On the second floor, I usually can get a table by a window with an electrical outlet to power my laptop, a view, and privacy. In fact, I often have one of those small rooms entirely to myself. I see some complaints by Unilocaler’s about the service and coffee here, and I could add my own. The espresso is excellent, but they don’t quite get right a few other things. However, there remains the privacy and the building, which I do value. If I am looking for dinner with coffee, then I go to Room 39, a block or so from the others: first class coffee, wine, and food. No bargains here(except on Mondays), but worth the prices. I wish someplace in KC would open a coffee shop in the Argentinian tradition. All over Buenos Aires there are coffee shops serving tiny little sandwiches(«sandwiches de miga»). Argentinians stop for coffee and a tiny sandwich all day and evening — a wonderful and healthy life style, that is missing in KC. No, the tiny sandwiches are not Spanish tapas.

Hey, neighbors(and visitors): this is where to go for coffee in our neighborhood. It appalls me to see Starbucks, a half-block away, getting away with a «4,» while Javanaut gets dragged down by nostalgists from The Crave(R.I.P.). Yes, I’d like to be able to smoke inside, but hey: it’s cleaner, by all accounts; and the fenced-off terrace area in front is truly the neighborhood smoking lounge(along with F&F, a half-block down) and a great place to take in the sun and passersby. And the coffee and tea are excellent, conscientiously prepared(which of course takes longer: if there’s a line, pick a seat, get settled and come back). Change is hard; but get over it! Most important are the people: this is a great place to meet people — for those you know already, the upstairs rooms especially provide more private places to talk, whereas downstairs I often run into people I know — and others I don’t. And for those reviewers who complain the baristas are unfriendly: well, look in the mirror or see your shrink. The problem may begin at home… I’ve found all of them to be responsive to conversation and quite accommodating to all us regulars. So get regular: you’ll grow to like it!

Maybe it’s unfair to compare this place to The Crave, but The Crave was so gosh-darn cozy. And the people who worked there were nice. And the coffee was good. And their sign didn’t use a NASA-esque font that looks completely ridiculous on an old house in the middle of Volker. The Javanaut workers are not so nice, the coffee is not so good, and it is NOT gosh-darn cozy. And the font on the sign? Did I mention that? Sorry, Javanaut, you’re definitely my java not.

Javanaut, aka The Establishment Formerly Known as The Crave, sucks. When did ownership change? Javanaut is in a great location; right in the center of Westport. It’s an old house as well, which makes it very unique. When it was the crave, the different rooms upstairs were full of comfy chairs and squashy sofas. It was a great place for meetups or large groups. With the new ownership, gone are the comfy seats and good service. It has been replaced with rickety metal tables and a sour-faced barista that spent most of her time outside smoking instead of indoors dealing with her customers. I waited in line for 15 minutes before I gave up and went back to my table. A friend bought a brownie which 1) tasted like slightly chocolate-flavored dirt and 2) had a small piece of animal fur baked into it. She showed it to the girl behind the counter in the hopes of getting her money back. After ten minutes of waiting to be acknowledged, did she get her money back? Or perhaps offered a new brownie sans cat hair? Nope. The girl simply shrugged, said«I didn’t put it there» and turned her back on her. I really miss The Crave. :(
