Who said vegans can’t have delicious baked goods?! This place turned me into a believer and I can’t wait to go back and try more delicious vegan friendly desserts and muffins. I’m not ashamed to admit that during my visit I more than indulged and got to try the delicious no bake cookie, espresso chip muffin and cocoanuts bar. Don’t ask me to pick a favorite, that’s like trying to pick your favorite child, because they were all equally and uniquely satisfying. If you’re a coconut fan, you have to try their cocoanuts bar. Shavings of real coconut layered on top of a crust like bar with chocolate glazed in the middle. Delicious! The no bake cookie is really dense and very filling, don’t let it fool you. The chocolate, peanut butter and oats combo was an instant mouth savoring success. The bonus about this place is the décor. This place is neatly tucked away in an old school house with small couches, comfortable, fun chairs and has cool drawings/paintings hanging up on the walls, all for sale. If you’re looking for a great escape from your apartment/house or looking for some nice alone time: bring your book or laptop and cozy on up in here. I saw a lot of people comfortably reading and on their laptop and I don’t blame them. I’m kicking myself for not trying the coffee, the reviews about it are incredible, but I’ll be coming back to this place quite often and I’ll make sure to try it next time. Lastly, this place makes its own almond, cashew, hemp and soy milk. If you’re not impressed by now then I’m not sure how to impress you, because this place single handily gives veganism an incredible reputation and offers healthy diet alternatives. Now, I’m not a vegan; I just enjoy good food, and this place far exceeded my expectations.

Tried this place out this weekend and I know I’ll be coming back soon! I’m not a vegan by any means — so I hadn’t really thought to come here, but a friend suggested it so I decided to give it a whirl. They have a lot of baked goods to choose from — I ordered the espresso chip muffin and the no bake cookie — and they were both AMAZING. Literally I was full after eating the muffin, but kept stuffing my face with the peanut buttery goodness that is their no bake cookie. Also, the espresso chip muffin was so good — whatever frosting drizzle they have on top was the perfect touch. I did not have the chance to try their coffee drinks, but next time I come back I plan on giving one a try. They have everything from little tables, to couches, to outdoor seating here as well. I’m very excited to come back!

Been coming here while waiting for a family member at nearby medical facilities. I did ask recently if they serve the trendy tumeric latte. They said no but did say they have a coconut curry latte which might be similar for those interested.

Awesome Staff and outstanding sweet treats! I thought the pumpkin sheet cake with cream cheese icing was divine and I had the chai tea. The seating area overlooks 39th street however there is ample seating inside. This great mom and pop vegan treat is a must visit if in the area. I was not a fan of my scone but, I never have liked scones so I am biased. Prices range from $ 5 – 10 for a drink and treat. Support local business and tip well!

Their pastries and treats are amazing regardless of whether or not dairy is involved. Delicious, every bite.

UPDATE! I can’t remember the circumstances behind my previous 4-star review, but after my most recent trip to KC, I’m upgrading my review to a 5 stars. I was in Kansas CIty for 3 days, and I went to Mud Pie EVERYDAY. Yes, I’m hitting the gym extra hard now that I’m home, but it was so worth it. Here are some things I enjoyed recently at Mud Pie: 1, Cheddar Sausage scone(visited 3 times, got a scone each time) 2. Smores Bundt — holy goodness 3. Salted cararmel square — I didn’t even share this with my husband it was THAT good 4. Pumpkin crumb cake — How do you do it??? I love you, Mud Pie. Please bring your goodness to Philadelphia. There’s nothing this good here and I’m already missing you. We’ll be back!

Mud Pie has always been a favorite since they’ve opened. They are always improving and adding new treats to the menu! I love this place for a quick coffee or a nice afternoon just hanging out!

We have been coming here for about four years now and it is hands-down the best service and the best food. We are not to begin nor are we vegetarian and we still love this place. There are always plenty of fresh options and if you’re not a breakfast person they always have at least two or three sandwiches to choose from. I look forward to our Sunday mornings at mud pie. You can’t go wrong with anything you order. Best service ever!

My new favorite coffee house. Great selection with all the offerings of the other trendy coffee shops but none of the attitude. Plus tons of tasty treats, ample seating, & decent parking options which can sometimes be a struggle in this area. Since it’s a vegan joint there’s not dairy options, but as someone that is lactose intolerant, I’m giddy by all their dairy alternative options. The coconut milk in my latte was so creamy & flavorful.

Mudpie is cute and quirky. The staff is always pleasant, and the drinks are pretty ok. I’ve tried several of their gfree snacks, and they’ve all been a bit ‘off’; for sure not my favorite. Their house-made hemp milk is goooood. Check it out, it’s cute! :)

I love Mud Pie! This sweet vegan bakery located in an old house in Midtown is easily one of the better finds for a coffeehouse in Kansas City. All of the pastry options here are fantastic, and you would never even guess they are missing traditional butter when you taste them. The staff is friendly and quick to greet you when you walk in. You can switch up certain ingredients in your drinks to accommodate your tastebuds. A great place to stop for breakfast or a snack if you are in the area.

One of the most consistent coffeehouse sin this area. I’ve never experienced over-extracted espresso, burnt milk, or broken foam here. I’m always a little hesitant to come here, because«vegan,» and I love me some milk & butter. I also feel a little out of place sometimes since I’m not even a little bit hippie, hipster, vegan, earthy, or any of the other sub-culture groups who are regulars here. However, I always leave here feeling relaxed and satisfied. This is the true coffeehouse experience — the kind that has slowly disappeared since the late ‘90s. Music played at the perfect volume, several homey rooms, plentiful seating options, and patrons languidly reading books, working on laptops, playing board games, or chatting in small groups without feeling rushed. On a recent visit(after driving to 3 other tea shops, not finding parking & not wanting to walk in freezing temps) I had an almond milk London fog tea latte. It was perfectly creamy — exactly the consistency & flavor I was hoping for with a nice dusting of nutmeg that elevated this over my usual tea latte. The apple crumb cake was moist, apple-y, with a satisfying crunchy cinnamon sugar topping. Yum. I will be back for this tea latte many times!

A proper Americano and delicious vegan food and treats! I had a «cheese» and«sausage» scone that any meat and cheese eating caveman would have enjoyed. They also have sandwiches, which will bring me back here for a lunch.

If only I lived in Kansas City, this would be my ideal coffee house. Everything I have tried has been on-point, from their coffee with hemp milk, pumpkin muffins, fruit seedie bar, and the Dirty South drink I would HIGHLY highly recommend. I asked for a coffee drink without any sweetener and was directed to the Dirty South, and it definitely lives up to it’s standards! Mud Pie is so spacious, with plenty of upstairs room and downstairs, as well as a beautiful patio for the warmer days. Staff is always super friendly and willing to help out. I’m very disappointed that I have to leave KC so soon!

So we only came here because of all the other awesome reviews because honestly vegan just doesn’t sound delicious. Oh my goodness were we wrong! We only stayed enough to time to order. It was extremely cramped and busy while we were there but I see in pictures there are other rooms to sit in. We picked out a vegan and gluten free blueberry crumble. Oh sweet goodness was it amazing! I would love to know the recipe for those because I would make them all the time! I’m newly dairy free and loved that this treat still tasted like buttery goodness without the stomach ache. The blueberries… I can’t even begin to explain the blueberries. My hubby even enjoyed it! I’ll definitely come back to try more of their stuff. Hopefully they’ll have that blueberry crumble goodness.

If you want cool, quaint, coffee, and carbs all in one setting, this is your place. As the name suggests, there is indeed a literal house with a vegan bakery(various pies, no mud in sight) and coffee inside, and I must say that both halves of the abode are exceptional. I always try to order the most unique coffee item on the menu the first time I visit a coffee shop, and at Mud Pie, that happens to be a drink called the Dirty South — chicory-augmented coffee served au lait style with your choice of milk(I went with almond to enhance the nutty woodiness of the chicory root, but you can also choose from a bevy of other vegan options). The iced version of the drink was incredibly refreshing on a blisteringly hot day and very unique for the region… between this and Beignet, you would think I had moved to New Orleans instead of KC. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something you can’t get anywhere else in the city(according to the barista), and I would think the hot version of this would be a lot like drinking a savory, comforting, lightly spiced hazelnut latte during the winter months. As for the confectionery side of Mud Pie, I find it personally astounding just how many scrumptious-looking, veganized treats this place whips up. If my delicious first contact with one of their chai pistachio muffins is any indication, there’s no downgrade in flavor coinciding with the less traditionally prepared(and most likely more healthy) versions of their wide array of baked goods. I had a few bites of another of their muffins(espresso chocolate chip, I believe), and it did not disappoint. I will most definitely be back many times to make my way through the assortment of bars, cakes, and pastries that stuffed their case. The atmosphere of the house itself is very inviting — a menagerie of tables, chairs and couches sits in the main dining room with local artwork dotting the walls. There’s also an upstairs portion that I didn’t get to peruse on my first visit. There are myriad nook and crannies to curl up in to read, study, or hang out, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were secret passages somewhere in the place. This is what your grandma’s house would be like… if she was more hipster than you. Mud Pie is one of those places I fell in love with immediately upon entering. It has just the right amount of charming coziness to modern sophistication ratio to make you feel comfortable regardless of age or skinny jean/flannel predilection. I know I’ll be spending many an hour here in the future grazing on their treats and downing Dirty Souths to my heart’s content.

Stopped in with a work mate to work on a project together online. I had a Chia tea which was made perfectly. Just the right temp and flavor. Had a peanut butter Rice Krispie bar too and it was amazing! I had it all eaten before my tea was done… and I thought I was just going to take a small bite! They over charged me by accident offered me something else and I told them it was no big deal, their prices are more than fair. Nicest staff you’ve ever met. Two days later I noticed they credited my account for more than they accidentally overcharged. How honest they are! Will for sure go back!

Had I achieved local loyal status? Barista remembered my drink. I’m pretty sure I had a stupid smile but than the next fella was also remembered and than we were both stupid smiling. I like the corner couch and if I’m lucky its the spot closest to the window. There are a couple rooms and I feel lucky if I find a good spot at all. It’s an old house with an old soul encouraging small talk and maybe a lil healthy debate or getting some work done. Books, laptops, games, guitars, sketch pad bring it and it’s good place for it all. Guitar preferably on the patio, yes you look pretty rock star swoon worthy. Just keep in mind the rooms are small(you know who you are). They have definitely caught on as a vegan baked goods hot spot. If no one told me my cupcake was vegan I wouldn’t have been able to tell, my fella couldn’t hehehe. The caffeine here is a serious contender in Kansas City and in the vegan world they got chops. Non dairy beverages can hold their own here and even be a preference if you don’t have allergies. Parking cons, not many available but if there were maybe I would never have my couch spot by the window at all. It’s west 39th street developed during a time when everyone mostly walked because everything you needed was close. I think that’s probably the best way to experience Mud Pie if you don’t live nearby. Third Friday of the month should not be passed up for a visit.

For 20 years, there has been a coffee shop of sorts at this location. Mud Pie has been here since early 2011 and I am proud to say that I’ve been a fan from the beginning. For those who may remember, the previous establishments were geared toward attracting the Art Institute crowd. I remember sitting on the patio, drinking a latte while my friend smoked a cigarette(before the ban) and we talked poetry and politics with the other crazy 39th street hippies with dreads in their hair and tattoos on their arms. The weekends were filled with punk shows and the bathroom was absolutely floor to ceiling covered in graffiti. Mud Pie is what happened when all those punks and goths and hippies grew up and became grad students and professionals and parents. This is the kind of coffee shop you find in small coastal cities with a young, hip, health conscious population. Kudos to KC for not only having one, but supporting it for this long(and hopefully longer). The food is of course, delicious. They use Oddly Correct coffee so of course, that’s excellent as well. The seating is varied and scattered around the old house(including upstairs) and there’s even a gated off«play room» for kids up there as well. You’ll often find the owners behind the counter and they are the sweetest people you’ll meet. I really hope this establishment sticks around KC and the Volker neighborhood for a very long time.

I had been meaning to try Mud Pie for a long time and finally got to experience it during KC’s Caffeine Crawl. One word: YES! This is a cool spot, literally ‘housed’ in the oldest house on 39th street. You’ve got several rooms, nooks and crannies to explore throughout here including an upstairs. Now it was definitely beyond packed when I was there, but that’s also because there were a couple Caffeine Crawl groups bunched in at the same time, so I’d imagine it’s usually a bit more free flowing. Their coffee tastes fantastic, and while I can’t help all the latte lovers out much as I’m a black coffee drinker, I can say that they take the time to do things right. They also make their own almond and hemp milks which I tried and were very good. The part of this that I am most shocked about is how delicious their vegan baked goods are. I’m the furthest thing from vegan but can say that every one of their baked goods I tried were incredible. I was pretty damn caffeinated at the point of trying them so I went all in on a small coffee cake, ‘Hostess’ cupcake, and a piece of a cheddar bagel. All were so well made it was the highlight of the afternoon. Excited to go back here as it seems like a great spot to get some work done or hang out.

There are some pretty tasty treats here. Love going to all vegan places because NOTHING is off limits and that’s a major luxury. Tony got an espresso chip muffin(amazing) and a coffee. I got a sausage and cheese scone and a cashew milk cappuccino(ah-MAZE-ing). I also asked the dude working to pick our some take-home treats — his faves. They were really friendly and didn’t mind the longer transaction. We stopped here a few years back and it was good but I think they really found their groove. Super helpful staff and tasties for the road. Can’t wait to get back to KC!!!
