What was once a slightly bizarre setup with hay bales acting as makeshift railings and seating, has now transitioned into a bona fide rink! My kids like going here, and I’ve even taken it for a spin once. Skate rental is $ 12 per person. I thought this seemed a bit steep. No children’s pricing either, just a flat fee. For 3 of us(1 adult and 2 young children) it ended up being $ 36 for about a 1.5 hour skate session! Am I a cheap«skate» because this seems pretty high to me! Inside is the pay counter and a mini concession offering where you can buy candy, water, soda and even wine! The day we went, they didn’t have any of those push things you can rent so you won’t fall down(as easily) on the ice. The female employee said a group of teens pretty much destroyed them all last weekend.(Question: No employee supervision while this was going on??) Instead they had stacks of milk crates and…5 gallon buckets to slide across the ice. Although kind of WT, I figured it was workable… until I witnessed several small children pushing two stacked crates and they would fall apart and the kids would end up in a piled heap on the ice crying. I’m not sure sliding buckets and crates is such a good idea. On a more positive note, we will be back again. My kids enjoy it, and it’s an easy drive and it’s not usually too crowded. They also have«fire» pits to toast your s’mores(packages sold inside) when you’re ready to warm up.

We recently moved to KC and my husband came across the ice rink while walking around the Villages at Burlington Creek. While eating dinner at Em Chamas, my toddler saw the ice rink through the window and it was love at first sight. Fortunately for her, they had skate helpers to allow her to skate more independently as Mommy is not too steady on her feet and hugged the wall. Price is reasonable, considering it allows you to skate for as long as you like, barring league play or private events. And it’s within walking distance from our apartment! My husband and his friend watched and engaged in conversation from the sidelines in a seating area near a cozy fire pit(meant for S’mores kits sold by KC Ice). Staff was super friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back before the ice skating season ends. This business is very versatile as ice rink turns into a sand pit in the summer.

What started out as a sheet of ice surrounded by hay bales has evolved into one of the nicest outdoor sheets in the KC Northland. During the summer months, apparently it’s a volleyball pit, which I am unable to speak to; however, once it gets cold enough the sand becomes ice and it’s game on! The skate shop is clean, staff is friendly. For those beginners out there they have plenty of skates to rent. For those wanting to take it a step further they also have sticks for rent for hockey. Very decently priced for the amount of ice time you get, this is a weekly favorite of mine throughout winter. I would highly suggest everyone giving this place a try!
