Unfortunately, Marty’s is now closed. Went by this weekend in hopes of getting some good BBQ, but the building is vacant.

My boyfriend and I have been here twice now. We both had the Regular Marty each time. My BF had turkey the first time and beef the second. I had turkey both times. We thought the sandwiches were good, and we like the sauce. With the sandwiches, we had sweet potato fries. The fries were good but not great. Out biggest complaint about Marty’s is the service. We were unlucky enough to have the same waitress both times. She wanted our drink order before we even sat down. On our first visit there, the waitress then came back by twice right away, barely before we had had time to look at the menu. The second time we went there, we had to hunt her down just to order. At both visits, we had to hunt her down to get our check. She was not busy either. There were no more than 2 other tables occupied both times we were there. I want Marty’s to succeed, but they aren’t going to with poor service. Also they could do something about the ambience. It’s so quiet in there. Don’t know that I will return.

Marty’s is a solid BBQ joint here in the land of Smokehouse. I had the Burnt End Platter. It was accompanied by a huge pile of French fries and Beans. The fries were good but needed salt and the beans were tasty. The burnt ends were tasty and plentiful. If I had one small complaint they could have been hotter but still tasted really good. They had a great smoke flavor and a nice crust. What I really liked is that they were not swimming in sauce. There is sauce on the table if you want to add more. My wife had the burnt end sandwich. It was huge, probably the best value of the night. My boys split the Messy Marty special for 6.95 with a side of fries again another great value. Service was really good and our food came out quickly. Give Marty’s a chance and I think you will find it to be a nice addition to BBQ options in the Parkville /Barry Rd area.

don’t get the bbq chicken — dry as the griswalds turkey. Potato salad had no flavor and they ran out of their special by 7:15 on a friday night — how does that happen — especially when the place only has about a total of 8 of their 40 some table filled? I ate here a while back and had a sandwich. You are probably ok going that route, but do not get any of the entrees.

Gotta go two stars, not a place I would take a BBQ lover or a KCBS judge. However, service was great! Ribs were dry and taste was bland. Beans were cute in their little crock, but nothing popped Fried pickles were good. Brisket was shaved thin I mean paper thin and yet was dry. Ham was sliced super thin too but it was a good piece of meat I opted to scrap the chicken and sub in Italian sausage… Dry not freshly sliced. Cole slaw. Had an off taste to it and really needs some work. Fried pickles were good… Sorry to say but Marty’s is still rough around the edges, they need to review and have non family members rate in a blind test and go from there… There is potential, but they have to remove the DRY from their items slice the meats thicker. And 86 the cole slaw recipe. Tell Mom you love her but not her recipe. I hope they get it. Until then I will drive past smokehouse and hit smoke box. Question: why do BBQ joints lay the sauce on their meats. I can’t poke at anyone’s sauce, that should make the meal tip the scale. Marty’s is a heavy tomato taste sauce. I don’t care for it but you might so I give that for information, good luck Marty’s, please work on it. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – April, 26 Return there this evening had sweet potato fries which were just really great was able to sample both barbecue sauce with the sweet potato fries and I discovered that white top is my favorite, I had the Uncle Marty and the wife had the messy Marty both great This time the meat was moist sliced right really good. Didn’t do the coleslaw but I had cheesy corn and then got a side of baked beans don’t know what was wrong with the baked beans last time but very flavorful this time and not dry like they were last time very good meal. I will also add Anytime the management comments back anything on Unilocal or trip adviser it’s a plus because it shows they care thank you Joe I’ll be back. Next time I will try the coleslaw promise

I HAD to come check out the new Marty’s for my dear late husband Kelly, who would pout if he had to eat barbecue anywhere else. If I could, I’d give 3 ½ stars for a combined technical/artistic score, but I want to pull up the 2 ½ star average. It’s way better than that. It’s been so long, I can’t say if the food is any different now than at the old place. I can say I enjoyed what I had. The Messy Marty sandwich probably isn’t the best vehicle for evaluating how they handle individual meats, but it sure is tasty. They describe it as their version of a sloppy Joe-its a combination of smoked meats chopped and smoked again in sauce. At first I agreed with another writer said there was too much bun; but it’s very soft bread, and after adding a little more sauce, I found that it helped coral some of the Messiness. Overall it’s like a pulled pork sandwich, but with more texture. I liked it. I think I learned to eat sweet potato fries at the old Marty’s…these weren’t the best I’ve ever had, but they were good and came out very hot and fresh. I miss the dark, close interior(and proximity) of the old place, but I guess it’s a necessary concession to the more outer-ring, upper income suburb they moved into. It’s clean, bright and comfortable anyway, and our server was top-notch. I think now they only have beer and wine; surely that will change. Overall it was an enjoyable meal, and I need to find out if the ribs still live up to Kelly’s standards.

They are .close. We went at noon on a Monday to be surprised that it was $ 1(beer) draw day. Excellent(noted!) Second, those fried pickles and the ranch were done perfectly. And Third, Monday must be the day that older ladies crave the BBQ, but it could have been for the $ 1 beers, they took over half of the seating, it was packed! I ordered the Messy Marty. WAY too much bun. It is a mix off all the smoked meets, sloppy joe style. We didn’t think of asking if they had other sauce, the one on the table was not my favorite, dark and sweet. J got a double meat sandwich and thought it was OK. They were really pushing the wings and I overheard a lot of folks ordering burnt ends, I plan on having both next time. I thought the prices were about right for BBQ in the area but I’d seriously be happy with going back for pickles and beer.

My favorite thing at the old Marty’s BBQ was the huge hand made mozzarella sticks we always ordered as an appetizer. I was very disappointed when I ordered them today and all we got were 4 sticks that were about the third of a size as they used to be, for the outrageous price of $ 5.99. The food tasted good, but the service was poor. They brought out the wrong portions, and dishes that were missing parts of what we ordered. I would have expected them to have their act together by now. I hope they can fix it and reach their former glory, but the restaurant was practically empty on a Sunday afternoon during a Chiefs game, so I’m not sure they will.

The place is new and very clean — including the restroom. We had a very attentive young server. I was disappointed to find they didn’t have a liqueur license yet, as they’d advertised a full bar. I ordered a half chicken, but came to find out they didn’t have any done. I substituted the burnt end and it was fine, but thought the food lack in presentation. Overall, the food was OK, service was good and they place was clean. I’d go there again, but wouldn’t go out-of-my-way to do so.

I highly recommend the King Marty beef and smoked ham combo. Onion rings are a must, no matter what you choose to try. You can’t go wrong with the spare ribs either. It is great to have QUALITY local BBQ again North of the river

Went in there to try some of the BBQ. One of the Owners seated me and I sat there for 20 minutes without being waited on. There were 2 waitresses that came by my table multiple times and just went on by. The Owner was near by and did not even notice. There were a couple of patrons sitting at the next table that noticed I had not been served and mentioned it to me. I told them that I was tempted to leave. They told me that the food did not compare to the Original Marty’s. I left and do not intend to go back. The service sucked but cannot tell you about the food.

Man! Have I missed Marty’s?! Ever since it closed over on the corner of Vivion and Antioch in Kansas City North Carol and I have had to drive many blocks south of the river for great Kansas City barbeque. I’ve been twice now; the first time was just after they had opened and not everything was in place(read: «they didn’t have the li’l ribbies yet»). Saturday evening Carol and I went to dinner there and I was served the meatiest spare ribs I have ever had. I couldn’t believe how thick and jucy they were(I recall that it was a half slab). I had their beans and onion rings as sides, little ribbies for an appetizer, and Carol their«Uncle Marty beef and gam combo sandwich with fries. Now, Carol and I have judged several barbeque contests in the past, so we’re both good and fair judges of what is good barbeque and what is ho-hum. To be fair, there are other good barbeque joints in town and more than a fair share of great ones; after all, this is Kansas City! The new Marty’s is one of the great ones, and given that it is family owned and operated that means that it will remain at the top and quality will not slip over time. The place is comfortable, open and very clean. The service is top notch and the prices are reasonable. Saturday evening, as I said was my second visit, but the place was busy, the conversations were those of customers who were already at home, and the staff and management was fully attentive. Carol and I will work our way through the manu over the next few weeks, and Ihope to report back with more good news.
