We found this place on Groupon and decided to give it a try. First off, the restaurant is adorable. With exposed brick walls, wood floors, fresh flowers on the tables and a gorgeous old fashioned looking bar, the look of this place couldn’t be any better. It’s a very tiny space with only about 10 – 12 tables, so you will definitely need a reservation if you come here on a weekend. We arrived around 6:30, which was about 30 minutes before the piano player was scheduled to start playing. During those first 30 minutes, there was zero noise in the restaurant which made it awkward to have a conversation. With the tables so close together and no music, everyone could hear everything the other patrons were saying, which caused a lot of awkward eye contact and nervous giggles with strangers. When the piano player started, things definitely felt more relaxed, and we really enjoyed ourselves. We both ordered a mixed drink, and split the fresh mozzarella bruschetta, which was really delicious. For an entrée, we each ordered the flat iron steak with mashed potatoes and grilled zucchini and tomatoes, which we both felt was ok, but forgettable. For dessert, we split a piece of the triple chocolate cake which consists of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse filling and chocolate ganache on top. This came out of a refrigerator and was served cold. It was still good, but I think it would have been amazing if it would have been served at least at room temperature. Overall, we liked the small, intimate atmosphere and cool décor of this place and the excellent service we received, but we both found the food to just be «ok» and not«great», and agreed we can find better food for the same price elsewhere.

We arrived at Thomas around 8:45 on a Saturday. Hostess seated us at a table in the bar area. Sat there for 20 minutes but no server ever showed up. Place wasn’t even busy, but we got no service at all. Left and went to a restaurant down the street.

Very good! Fits really well into the whole area, good vibe, staff was good and the guy on the piano is excellent. Two of us ordered the Buttermilk Cider Chicken, one order of the Flat Iron Steak and one had the Pork Chops. The Pork Chops came out dry but the staff replaced it with another Buttermilk Chicken. Even my wife who’d ordered the steak decided she had wished she had ordered the chicken as well. It really was that good. We tried the scallops and calamari starters which were good but not overwhelming. The sauce they serve with the scallops was very nice. Excellent dinner and recommend.

Don’t order the duck. Ordered on a Tuesday night and everything on my plate had been previously cooked and reheated. Grease splatter marks on plate from set in the oven or broiler to reheat. Duck breast cut in 8 or so shrunken thumb sized portions, overcooked, tough, cold in the middle whipped sweet potato and pre-grilled zucchini. Terrible, very disappointed. However, gets an extra star because the staff and entertainment was good, whiskey drinks were generous and delicious which helped the overall experience. Scallop app was good. A friend recommended the buttermilk chicken and thank goodness, it was indeed a winner and freshly cooked. Glad I tried it with a Groupon, would not recommend and could not return.

Mehhhh. Did like the half off glasses of wine. Calamari was way over cooked and chewy. Dipping sauce was plain. I ordered the Diablo pasta with seafood medley… only had 2 shrimp, that aren’t deveined and still have their tails on, and 1 scallop… But it cost $ 20. I feel like it’s Olive Garden quality food. Service was great. Will not be back.

I’ll start by saying we only had a few of the small plates and no entrees. We had been here once before a couple of years ago and decided to give it another try. We wanted a light meal and some drinks on Friday night, so we went to Thomas. We got a bottle of Chardonnay and the Calamari, Goat Cheese Marinara, Firecracker Shrimp, and the Mussels. Right off the bat we noticed that all of our plates seemed to have the same kind of spice to it. It seemed like perhaps this is how Thomas was trying to add their own signature to popular dishes? The Calamari was good. The Goat Cheese Marinara is described on the menu as being«coins of goat cheese in our herb tomato gravy served with toasted baguettes». There was only one coin of goat cheese, and the rest just seemed like breadsticks with marinara that you might get from Papa Johns, but with that extra spice. The Firecracker Shrimp was comprised of 6 shrimps that were overcooked and also doused in that spicy mixture — we at least expected spiciness with«firecracker» in the name, but there wasn’t any other flavor to it. That spice combined with the rubbery and dryness of the shrimp left us disappointing. Finally we had the Mussels — again, with the unnecessary spiciness and a lot of tomatoes in the sauce(which I really didn’t expect with a white wine sauce). It looked like they dumped bruschetta into the sauce. It also had WAY too many shallots which overwhelmed the rest of flavors. Again, we only had small plates, and the food isn’t bad, but I think it’s way overpriced for what you’re getting. The service was fine, the ambiance was pleasant, but if the food isn’t good, it’s hard to get too excited about the restaurant.

Review for lunch only. Food was fine, but not great. A few service hiccups, our food came out pretty far apart for a largish group. One guy’s sandwich was missing a lot of stuff, my fried green tomato sandwich was kind of blackened, said fried green tomato was almost hard to find and not enough bacon(is there ever enough bacon?) Kind of a nice quiet atmosphere.

Great hidden gem on 39th! Came here with a groupon and the service and food were excellent. Wine list by the glass has lots of options. The kitchen can also make items gluten free which is awesome. Had the scallops appetizer which I highly recommend! The buttermilk apple cider chicken is amazing! The sauce and mashed potatoes are unreal. Look forward to eating here again!

We have been coming here since they opened. I only had 1 bad experience with the food, and that was at dinner. Needless to say we only come at lunch now. I love how their prices haven’t changed in years, but the quality has stayed consistent. Today we had a work lunch, so we decided to order Thomas to go. We ordered Prime Rib, Turkey Club, Chicken salad, Grilled Chicken, Fried Green Tomato BLT sandwiches all with fries or side salad. I can tell when this group likes the food when they ask where is it from. The Fried Green Tomato BLT is my ultimate favorite, and I tried the Prime Rib sandwich as well, but personally I didn’t care for it. All in all everything was very tasty.

Had a groupon so made it a date night. This place is cute. Tiny, live music, really loved the vibe. The food was ok. The groupon was for 2 drinks, an appetizer, 2 entrees. They have a fun cocktail list. I had a flirtini which was great but my hubby ordered a Thomas Whiskey cocktail(he loves whiskey) and it was utterly undrinkable. Onto the app — we ordered crab cakes which is one of my favorite foods ever, they were just ok. The entrée is where they shined. I had the buttermilk cider chicken which was melt in your mouth good and my husband had the fish of the day which he said was very good. Overall an OK experience.

I’ve eaten here for dinner before and it’s ok. This time we stopped for lunch. The place was deserted but the server attended to us promptly and professionally. We both had the cobb salad. The cobb salad was huge and included large pieces of iceberg lettuce, half slices of cheddar and swiss cheese, tomatoes, slices of cucumber, croutons, Maytag blue cheese and then dressing on the side. I wish the salad would have been served in smaller pieces and frankly, I prefer the cheese crumbled or shredded. The salad also included chicken. We enjoyed lunch but I’ve had better, more organized cobb salads. It is a nice place to take someone special for dinner. There are just better places for lunch.

Wow! A hidden jewel in Kansas City. We tried Thomas because they has a groupon that looked too good to be true. So we decided to give it a try. Glad we did! It’s not the same old same old routine of the Johnson County 119th or 135th Street Restaurants. Sometimes one needs a change of pace. A paradigm shift which Thomas was exactly that. This is a quaint urban paradise on 39th street. Down the street from a few other unique restaurants. The deal included 4 drinks, two appetizers, and four entrees. The drinks were great, appetizers very tasty. My wife and I shared the calamari and our friends has the fruit and cheese plate. Both appetizers were enough to share with all four of us and very good. I ordered the Buttermilk Cider Chicken. It was wonderful. Very tasty with a nice light cream sauce. I can’t say enough about how great it was my wife had the grilled Salmon. She love it. Our friends both had the duck breast with the cherry sauce. They both raved about the way it tasted and was prepared. The presentation of all the plates were artistically presented. Thomas is off the beaten path but is worth being tried with or without a groupon. This is a clean friendly place and the staff was engage with us the entire time we were there. Nice piano man in the front of the place giving it a nice ambiance on a Saturday evening.

It’s Thursday night, my girlfriend and I walk in and the place is nearly deserted inside. I’ve heard about their upstairs patio, but there’s no host so I ask the bartender about it’s availability-after a long silence he replies, «it’s all full.» After a pause, I ask what the wait time will be — he says he doesn’t know, but he can ask a server for us. He walks away, comes back and says it’ll be 10 – 15 minutes, so I tell him great we’ll get a drink from the bar. After we sit down he resumes drying glasses, makes a drink order, and converses with a server while completely ignoring is. It’s a full 10 minutes before he even asks us what we want. Once we get to our seats, I will say their patio is nice and intimate, but the food was another story. The menu was basic and uninspiring, and after using their disgusting restroom, we thought we’d play it safe: ribs and steak tips in wine sauce. Both were bland and the steak overcooked. We won’t be back.

Buttermilk Chicken. If I could just leave this review at 2 words, those are the only 2 words that you need to know: Buttermilk Chicken. My friends and I enjoyed every aspect of Thomas, from the food to the patio to the service. I can’t stop raving about that scrumptious buttermilk chicken. Their patio is on the rooftop, giving you an absolutely gorgeous view of the city. The waitress was willing to take our group picture and also talked about the buttermilk chicken in high regards. With a Groupon deal and excellent atmosphere, you absolutely must check out Thomas!

The hubby and I took a leap of faith to come here to celebrate my half century mark and I’m so glad we did! Every aspect of the evening was top notch. We started our meal with the scallops. I have to admit, that when I first saw them, I was a bit displeased. There were only four relatively small scallops swimming in a lot of sauce. Oh my! Silly me! The scallops were cooked to perfection and the sauce? Oh, the sauce! It was lemony, yummy, rich amazingness. I’m so glad we had plenty of bread to sop it up with. I would gladly order this app again. And again. For our entrees, my hubby had the duck and I had the pork tenderloin. My dish had a lovely cherry sauce that worked very well with the juicy pork medallions. It was accompanied by roasted potato slices with peppers. My hubby loved his duck which was served with a lightly sweetened sweet potato mash. We had a Groupon that included drinks. I enjoyed my berry daiquiri. I don’t recall what my hubby had, but it was ok. I would definitely try some of their other drink concoctions on future visits. While there, we were serenaded by a very nice gentleman who played piano and sang with a very pleasant voice. I told my hubby that his voice sounded like it came from the love child of Willie Nelson and James Taylor(uh, by the way, I consider that a compliment!). He took requests and we took full advantage, each of us choosing a song that was meaningful to us, making for a very romantic evening. Our waitress was very pleasant and gave some good suggestions. Service was very fast, too, even though she seemed to be covering a great deal of territory. The ambiance is casual chic. I think a person could feel comfy wearing jeans there, but not out of place being more dressed up. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. We will definitely be returning to Thomas!

Went here on a Wednesday night for dinner around 7pm. There were several people at the bar, so was pretty crowded(in my opinion) for a Wednesday night. I imagine it gets pretty packed on the weekend. The place is relatively small. We were told to seat where we like(which I really appreciate, rather than being«assigned») and sat in the back, away from the cold when the door opened. We ordered the goat cheese marinara for an appetizer. It was really good. The marinara was nicely seasoned, not too spicy, but flavorful. The goat cheese was creamy and delicious. For my entrée, I ordered the Buttermilk Cider Chicken. It was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and had a really delicious sauce. No complaints, really… it was delicious. My mom ordered the scallop appetizer and the spring salad with some sort of vinaigrette. The scallops were good, but the salad was WAY over-dressed. I tasted it and it was almost inedible. She only ate half of the spinach. I would definitely return here… but order dressing on the side! Oh, and there was live music that started about halfway through our meal. Pretty good covers, mostly rock, and definitely not too loud(we easily conversed but could also hear the music).

I just love when I discover a «brand new» place and get in on the ground floor by telling everyone what a hidden gem I have found… Thomas is NOT that place since I’m coming pretty late to the party and I’m writing the 101st review! However, Hubby and I are«brand new» fans after a late lunch this afternoon! Hubby went for his idea of a guaranteed indicator of whether a restaurant will be worth further visits: A Hamburger and fries. And Thomas serves up a beauty. All the way from the outside-in: starting with a Big, beautiful bun, choice of cheese(he chose Havarti, which is not offered just anywhere), lettuce, tomato, onion and all the way to a juicy, incredibly flavorful beef patty cooked to order. I almost wanted his, except that I was very pleased with my own choice: a Fried Green Tomato BLT, complete with crispy fried green tomatoes, sliced hot house tomatoes, leaf lettuce, bacon, sprouts, sharp cheddar cheese and dill mayo served on toasted sourdough. We both ordered crisp french fries as our side. We were seated just before 3 p.m. and although the lunch rush was over and it was very quiet except for the soundtrack playing over near the bar, our service was friendly, cheerful and casually top scale. Attentive when we needed something without hovering but giving us privacy and space. The lunch menu included several other sandwiches I would love to try at another time, so I expect we will be back at Thomas’ soon.

Can I base a review on a cheeseburger and French Fries. I can, because I KNOW how good Thomas is at dinner. Years back, I went to a Unilocal elite event at Thomas. It’s been on my mind, I’ve been meaning to eat there, since. I’ve had their cider fried chicken which is a dinner choice, and I intend to have it at an actual meal. Today they were serving lunch, and I had a signature cheeseburger. lame, right? Not really. It was an excellent choice. Their French fries are thin, but not shoe string like, and there’s plenty of them. They are lightly seasoned, with ketchup on the side. The cheeseburger was cooked as you liked your meat cooked, with a choice of cheese. I chose cheddar. The bun, toasted. I ate about 2/3rd’s of it. The service was top notch. But I would’ve gladly had the whole menu. I was kind of surprised their was a separate lunch menu. Several other items caught my eye, and they must be tried. But I love the food at Thomas, and go to that area often enough. Parking is behind, shared with Blue Koi, White Light books, Jazz, Anna’s oven, plus others. I’ve had trouble finding a parking spot on Friday night, but other nights it’s not so hard. I am totally going for dinner. Thomas has so much good food to offer. It’s worth going back.
