Oh how I missed you… I don’t eat at burger joints much anymore but this hit the spot after a Royals game and a bit of drinking! Single, everything, grilled onions and fries. But they forgot to bring some of our order which ultimately ended up being fine as we were full… back to the commend above — we don’t each at burger joints much anymore.

Good old fashioned burgers and onion rings. Chocolate malt was to die for and service was excellent.

Food was just okay. Really if you have ever been to a steak n shake or Freddy’s you would comparatively think they are better than Winstead’s. But we just got off the plane, they are ready open late and local. Our server was amazingly nice and chitchatted with us for a while. Ordered the cherry skyscraper shake which is GINORMOUS. Proportionally to the person drinking it, it’s quite the hysterical scene. They also bring it out to you while singing a skyscraper song and playing a tambourine. I died in embarrassment and a fit of giggles. Honestly it’s an A-OK place for some late night burgers. Just don’t be thinking it’s five guys burger mentality and you will be fine.

Stopped in here twice during my Kansas City stay. The breakfast is ok. Just simple diner grub. I do suggest going in for lunch for their infamous steak burger. Reminded me of steak and shake. Their onion rings are delicious too! Would I back next time I’m in town.

This is really upsetting because growing up in KC, Winstead’s is a classic for many of us. I went to get a burger and fries last night. I rarely have fast food, but I decided, «what the heck?» WRONG. Now it is my biggest regret. I was hit with the worst food poisoning of my life. I have never felt that sick or been in that much pain from anything in my lifetime. Absolutely awful. I contemplated calling 911. I broke out into cold sweats, I was shaking, I passed out. Forget chipotle’s health issues, it’s Winstead’s problem now. Bottom line– I’m done. It’s not worth it for you, or your internal organs. I called Winsteads and all they had to say was«Well, I ate a burger yesterday myself and I didn’t get sick.» Good for you. Bad for me.

Egg sandwich. Plain bread, cheese and egg(hard). Very plain and without thought. I asked for over easy and was told that I could only get over easy eggs in the mornings(???). Salad had old lettuce and way too much cheese. The SO had a triple burger… he said he felt like it tasted like a Wendy’s burger. The brownie sundae was great… that’s where the 2 stars reside. Food stains on the walls next to our booth. We watched a small child standing up coughing into the adjacent booth for 20 min… waitress saw. Then she sat a 3some into the booth without wiping the table down(poor people will be getting sick next week). Gross. Not recommended.

This is the best milkshake I’ve ever had. I can’t speak for all the food here. I just get a big milkshake here whenever we’re in town. It’s the most magical combination of vanilla, milkshake weight and ice cream texture… reminds me most of home-made ice cream back when I was a kid. It definitely matters which franchise you visit. I’ve had spotty results at various locations around town. We always hit the original location after a trip to the Nelson Atkins or the areas near Country Club Plaza.

A cute throwback malt shop kind of a place. Winsteads takes you back in time, but unfortunately, it seems to take you back more to the 80’s than the 50’s with this location. Lots and lots of 80’s décor. I felt like I was sitting in a scene out of a Shelly Long movie. We didn’t eat here, so I can’t speak to the food, but we did have malts. They were extremely underwhelming and lacked malt flavor. You can honestly find a better ice cream confection at Dairy Queen. I would be willing to give this place a second chance to see if my lack of enthusiasm towards Windsteads is just a case of ordering a not so great item on the menu, but would likely go through the drive through to do it.

I love this location. The history and vibe are great. The double steak burgers with everything on it. I pass on the grilled onions and opt for the raw instead. Love the onion rings. Try the banana shake for a treat.

I was really happy with this winsteads! Usually when I go to winsteads the service is god awful and there are flies all over the place. We were greated as soon as we walked in by the friendliest waitress I think I’ve ever had(which is a rare occurrence for winsteads). Our food came out promptly. I got a tuna salad sandwhich, a fifty fifty, & a cherry limeade. All were great! Our waitress even offered us to go drinks before we left! I was very pleased with this winsteads!

Pretty good place to catch a burger, shake & fries at. Not too expensive, right by the plaza and parking is cool as well. Would consider this place if you’re on the go, someone from out of town or your a regular on the plaza.

Went to winstead’s because I couldn’t find anything else open around the area at 930pm. It looks like a nice diner inside with a jukebox in the corner. Ordered the double winstead with fries and a chocolate shake, overall an alright meal. I didn’t like how it cost $ 1.15 to add bacon to the burger, though. The shake was good and the fries nice and crunchy. The sandwich could’ve had more meat for the price. In the end, I was satisfied with the meal, so all’s well that ends well.

I’m a 90’s kid but something about the 1950’s neon green art deco miss-mash comforting and nostalgic. We all know the food the diner-type food and Windstead’s does that well. A great diner experience.

I’m from California, I ordered the double burger, it was FU**ENTINY! I will say it was tasty, but it literally makes a Mc Donalds double cheese burger look like a Big Mac! I’m sad to say, that when I visit again KC, I will avoid this place like it was my ex wife!

Long live, which Winstead’s already has. Filled with late night college«kids» and a table large enough to house 9 long lived veterans of many Baseball Pilgrimages. Winstead’s was a perfect refueling station for a bunch of(not) under fed foodies. Excellent. Steak burger, no matter the size, and a spoon fed Chocolate Frosty with a side of fries are a must! FYI — Dining closes at 1:00 am, but the Drive Thru Window has a steady stream of vehicles 24 hours a day.

Very similar to steak and shake back home. I tried the triple winstead with everything and it was great! Great prices and friendly staff. The food came quick too. There is a drive through and I hear the shakes are very good. I will be back.

This place could be dynamite with a really good cleaning and a few cans of 1950’s colored paint. Not a huge fan of the super crunchy onion rings and the French fries needed salt. The burger was good and the service okay. Didn’t love that the bus boy rested his tub of dirty dishes on our table so he could grab our dishes. Seems like he could wait until we actually left to do that. I probably would not come back.

it took 10 minutes to get to the drive thru window and there were only 2 cars in front of me. I choose this location because it’s the closest burger joint from my job. I paid $ 14 for a cheeseburger and onion rings and a cherry limeade… seems kind of pricey for average food…

Always a five star. Nothing better for a craving. Order a single and 50 – 50 which means you get half fries and half onion rings. Can’t go wrong with that mixture. I love everything about this place, especially how close it is to the plaza.

Kinda impressed with myself that I remembered this location just down the street from the Plaza on the way to the Art Museum. It hasn’t changed a bit! That is both good and bad. The blinds were a little ragged and the décor was a classic 80’s dark green. But that is the décor I had expected and it was very nostalgic. Food was decent. Simple steak burgers. Very similar to the Steak N Shakes that populate the midwest. Milkshakes were yummy and the service was very friendly. Very much like a neighborhood hangout. My kids enjoyed the experience and the price was overall very cheap! Can’t go wrong there. We’ll be back when we visit KC again.

I really love Winsteads. Before I moved away from Kansas City, I ate here fairly often, but mainly came for the cherry limeades. There’s something about the nice little scoop of lime sherbert that makes them so addicting. I brought my family here and we all enjoyed our steakburgers. I love their onion rings and definitely recommend them over the fries. They also have an old working jukebox which is fun! I know they serve breakfast in the mornings but I’ve yet to try it. My first complaint about this place, however, are the prices. It APPEARS to be super cheap food because everything is priced out separately. After you pay $ 3 for a drink, $ 3 for fries/onion rings, and $ 4+ for a burger(add-ons such as tomato, lettuce, cheese etc. cost extra), you’re paying at least $ 10 for a plain old fast food meal. Don’t get me wrong, the food is «good», but it’s not worth $ 10 per meal. Also, I understand they have been in business since the 1940’s but I SWEAR they have not replaced a single thing in their buildings. The diner atmosphere is cool from afar but once you get an up-close glance, everything is so absolutely disgusting, old, and most of all DIRTY. So dirty. But if you can just not look around while you’re eating, it’s definitely worth stopping at least once!

If you enjoy traditional American dining, then this place will be a great asset to be included into your list of go-to comfort foods. Not only does place serve your typical comfort food, but it also looks like one of those burger joints that jump on the kick-butt hot tub time machine from the 1980s. Now, don’t get confused with my personal rating. They are good at what they do. No, seriously, they are REALLY good at what they do. I got a triple decker with a mixed of onion rings and tater tots along with a side of sweet elixir of life known as a cup of soda + a scoop of mint ice cream. On top of that, for a little over 15 bucks(tips included). This is definitely worthy of the title of go-to comfort food in KC. Their burger patties are rather unique. Instead of your typical round and 0.5 cm thickness burger, they squashed their patties nice and flat, so you can literally have the ideal«complete bite» of the burger. Very thoughtful. However, being a spoiled person through Asian cuisines, it is rather hard for me to look pass the simplicity and how bad this meal is to my health.

Some things never change, and I’m glad they don’t! Winstead’s has the same nice staff, the same smashed thin steakburgers and the same 50’s looking interior that has made it a staple just east of the Plaza. I can’t think of a time when I dined in at Winstead’s that it wasn’t just an awesome experience. We were there the other night listening to Otis Redding and The Kinks on the jukebox, having a late dinner of double steakburgers and onion rings. This is still the same place we used to come with my grandma on Sunday afternoons, take out of town guests or grab drunk food after a late night out. I love a place that knows who it is, and I think Winstead’s is up there as one of the most classic KC burger spots around.

We were visiting Kansas City to see the Seahawks and decided to try Winstead’s. The burgers are top notch, with really good beef. What set this apart was the milkshake. I love thick shakes with real ice cream and this definitely hit the mark. A great casual place to eat.

Here you have some local flavor to Kansas City. It’s a it’s a classic diner from the 50s era, menus pretty straightforward but there’s a few things you don’t want to miss. I will have to admit that I found the chocolate malts fantastic and if you get the chance don’t pass up the softserve chocolate ice cream, I say that simply because it will leave you wanting another. The place is very casual as you can expect for diner and it serves up grilled hamburgers in any style you want depending on what you want on it the price can fluctuate. I highly recommend grilled onions because that’s part of the deal. There is one hell of a fantastic waiter working there named Walter, he’s the bomb!
