Note: ** This Steak and Shake location is closed ** My first experience with Steak and Shake when they first opened up was mostly positive. The food was nice, and the service was good for the most part. The problem is that the consistency of the service went downhill over the past couple years. One particularly bad experience was when ordering through the drive-thru, they put all the food in one bag, and ended up squishing one of the burgers on the bottom. At least Whataburger has the sense to place each burger in a smaller bag of it’s own to prevent this.

Sitting at the table, blown away at caked up film of dirt covering the majority of surfaces inside. Needed a high chair. No problem! One is in use, had to clean the other one of what looked like a crime scene from where a previous child had exploded all over the vacant high chair. One benefit of eating out is that you don’t have to clean up afterwards. Steak & Shake in Katy has managed a work around by requiring their patrons to clean up BEFORE the meal. A random customer near us spontaneously went into a sneezing fit. There is a box fan plugged in over in the corner because: unknown reasons. Food came, very average. The fries were cold. It’s a damn Burger place, fries are constantly being fried! How are there cold fries? We tell the dismissive waiter about the fries, he replaces our two orders of cold fries with FIVE orders of cold fries. The solution to cold fries was increasing the cold fry population at our table by 250%. Agreed with other Unilocalers about the seating, ordering, payment, and tip confusion. Sigh. It’s good to find the silver linings in life. The wife pointed out as we left, «at least we are never coming back». Oh, please budget for shower time after eating here… perhaps counseling.

This is a generous rating. I thought this was a well-known chain with a good reputation, but this was not deliciousness. Thank goodness for dessert to save this rating. Diner style with waitstaff — unnecessary and not well managed. Tons of dirty tables and confused staff. Flies were everywhere and booths already had tears in the cushions. Food was mediocre — I got through half a patty melt and it was ok. Fries are weak — skinny and tasteless and the«flavors» are simply powdered seasoning dumped on top. I am pleased that no one’s gotten sick, but we’ll never be back.

NOSERVICE. Was seated at a table for over 10 minutes and NOTONESINGLEPERSONACKNOWLEDGEDME. There were only 2 other tables in the place and I was never spoken to or served. The restaurant was DIRTY and the employees uniforms were also dirty. I left, got in my car and tried to go through the drive through since I was already there and off the freeway. 6 cars wrapped around the building. No movement. Finally left Called corporate to complain. Customer service rep was combative and would not shut up long enough to hear my list of complaints. I was told I would receive a call back and I have not(of course). This place is a trashy dump and a joke, staffed with incompetent, poorly trained morons and the culture of ignorance goes all the way up to corporate level.

I wish I could give no stars. I was at this place for a good 30 min waiting to have my order taken. A group of people come in after me and because they are the same race as the waiter they get attend before me. I was not even offered a glass of water. Ridiculous never again coming here.

Asked for a high chair they brought us one that looked liked it had never been clean i decided to sit my 2 year old in the bench instead. Are you KIDDING me? Paper thin meat… about the same thickness as their cheese! Really. Servers were young and untrained. Sent the chocolate shake back. Why? It didn’t have enough chocolate syrup to make it different than vanilla! For this a chump like me pays $ 3 a shake? Whoof. I have always liked most SnS — but the lack of cleanliness, dangerously dirty restrooms and rude employees at this location are enough to make me NEVERRETURN! I have over 30 years experience with environmental, health and safety rules/standards — including health department inspections. This place should be closed, permanently. After placing my order, I went to wash my hands in the restroom… I was disgusted beyond belief at what I saw… wet floors, human feces smeared on the floors and walls, toilet tissue wadded up in piles everywhere. It looked worse than any horse stall or hog pen I have ever seen… I felt sick to my stomach. I asked to see the manager to inform him of the horrible conditions I had observed. A large black man looked at me, sighed out loud(as if I was interrupting his daily nap) and said«Yeah, I’ll check it.» That was it — I was expecting something more along the lines of, «Yes, Ma’am — I appreciate you bringing that to my attention, I will have it taken care of immediately.» That in and of itself was infuriating! For an establishment that provides food for human consumption, this manager was awfully glib about the pathetic conditions of the restaurant and likewise, his overall concern for customer’s and employee’s health and safety. I told him, «You don’t need to „check on it,“ you need to clean it.» Well, that didn’t sit well with him. Evidently, he didn’t like to hear the truth. He took my plate of food away and told me to leave. I did(gladly). If you value your health, stay far away from this place.

Walked in expecting to just go to the counter and order food but they seat you like a real restaurant. Threw me off a bit, and I think it’s unnecessary; having a waiter is more than enough. But hey, I’m not a restaurant manager, what do I know? I ordered the garlic cheeseburger, fries, and shake and they were alright, seems like everything had flavor except the meat itself. Decent prices though, they’re not hitting you over the head. Steak and Shake drive thru vs inside: go inside, because you can add their seasoned salt if needed, they don’t seem to salt their fries.

First off, we walk in and tell the hostess that we have 5 people. She walks away and wherever she’s standing, we assume she wanted us to sit at the booth nearby. She didn’t even say a word to us or even welcome us. So after seating ourselves, she walks over to another guy and talks to us. After some time our waitress comes by to take our drink and food order. We all have never waited so long for food at steak and shake(usually it’s really fast). I could have sworn that tables after us got their food first. They even messed up our order and put things on the wrong tab… Okay I guess. We wanted burgers and fries. Not attitude. They also had lots of staff in the kitchen too. So I don’t know why they would take so long.

I’m typically patient to a fault but, the service here is unbearable. Our past two visits have both been met with incompetent employees, unusually long wait times, and cold food. Both times, the first question at the drive thru has been to make sure the next order up was ours because they’d assumed we’d left. If people getting so frustrated they leave is a regular occurrence — there’s a problem. We’ll take our business up the road to Freddy’s when we’re in this area and will stick to the 1960 @ Eldrdige location for our Steak n’ Shake fix from now on.

When you’re customer service and food are worse than McDonald’s Houston we have a problem! I swung by here on a Saturday afternoon to pick up a quick meal before I went to my friend’s house. I REALLY wanted Pollo Loco, which was off Mason(a little bit out of my way) and I was already running late, so I settled for stopping at Steak and Shake. My first visit to one of these places was very pleasant.. .a decade later the experience was purely pathetic. When I entered, the place wasn’t packed, but it had a sizable crowd – enough to keep you busy, but not slammed. There were a few people finishing up their order at the counter – which by the way was junked up with menus. Kind of got red flags then as I observed the kitchen acting chaotic, but decided to stay put and look at the menu. The prices for a burger – pretty steep, but I didn’t feel like driving somewhere else, so I decided to give them a chance. Once again, my eyes looked at the kitchen whose floor was clearly dirty: buns on the floor, people standing around in the kitchen, yet you have a line in drive thru? Looks like plenty to do right? Working in fast food before, I should have known that this was a warning sign, but again, I didn’t want to give prejudgment. Plus, the patty melt sounded good reading it on the menu. When someone FINALLY came to the counter to take my order, I specifically asked for no mayo on my burger. I can eat it, but prefer not to. I asked the cashier to repeat the order back to me. I paid, but did not get a receipt, therefore, I asked for one, but she said she couldn’t give me one – the register was acting screwy. Eyebrow raised, I was really on alert now, but not as much as I should have been. When I finally received my order, I looked at the kitchen order which did not state«no mayo.» Since I knew there was an issue with the register, I asked if the mayo was removed from the burger. She stated that yes of course.. .the kitchen order looks different from the register receipt and does not state the special requests. Eyebrow still raised, I took my order and left when I KNEW I should have opened that burger to see if this was true. Of course it wasn’t. I get to my friends house and the first thing I see was MAYO!!! Since I was already at my friend’s house, I didn’t want to spend another dime on this slop and will be contacting corporate about the issue. Again, I worked in fast food before, if you make a special request on an item, it must be communicated to the kitchen from the register. Therefore, the manager completely lied in my face to avoid making the item over. Big mistake Steak n Shake! Bottom line: Steak n Shake is not the place to get your eat on any day of the week. Poor cows, just dying in vain here!

I thought the food was very good. Our server was sorry as hell though. I read her name on the receipt and am tempted to drop her name here, but don’t like to mess up a person’s livelihood so I’ll hold back on that info. I watched our shake slowly die in the window for over 10 minutes until after our meals came(which were very good IMO). She was slow and lethargic all night meanwhile the other waitresses were burning and churning through tables, all of us(her tables) just sat looking around as she stood motionless in the kitchen. It’s an open kitchen loser. I can clearly see you doing nothing. And when our dead shakes finally were served, my girl’s didn’t taste nearly as good as mine. Mine was delicious though.

I hardly ever give a bad review or anyone a one star but I had a horrible experience with the food. I mean our waitress was nice but that doesn’t matter when you get food poisoning. My brother also got food poisoning as well. If you want to help yourself then do NOT go here ever unless you want to spend a whole night tossing and turning and feeling like complete crap.

Food: Decent, not great. The fries are skinny and mediocre. Burgers are okay. Shakes are pretty good. Service: Probably what’s expected at most diners; servers that seem like they would rather be somewhere else. Ours wasn’t friendly. Price: Probably the best part about this place is that the prices are reasonable. If you’re hungry and want to eat a burger /shake on the cheap, it’s not a bad place to stop.

When this place first opened, I remember the drive through line was insane, and the counter service was equally heinous. But now, I decided to give it a try and found out that they have like THEBESTMILKSHAKES and even have a happy hour! I sat at the counter as I waited for my shake and watched them press out some delicous looking burgers. Made me question whether theirs are as good or better than Smashburger or Freddy’s. Hmm… maybe I’ll have to check out their burgers and wash it down with a chocolate shake? If and when I do, I’ll be sure to report my findings. But for now, I think I’ll have to say goodbye to Sonic Shakes. I found a hotter, handsomer and yummier version. Sorry, but we can still be friends Sonic. After all, Sonic ice melts in this Cherry A’s mouth! Oooh la la!
