Original Big Island Shave Ice

I pretty much ate plate lunches/​poke bowls and shave ice every day while I was in Hawaii for 2 weeks. Unilocal advised me to try the Halo Halo and it was right on target. Great flavors and combination of toppings. Best value of shave ice to boot! I have no picture to post because it was devoured so fast!

The ice literally melts in your mouth, and the Mochi balls are made fresh every single day. By far the best ice shave in all the land.

The speciality flavor options are delicious and out of this world! The Halo Halo and Kimirah are Fantastic, WOW!
Also truly adore and appreciate the natural flavors they create and offer. The natural coconut flavor is heavenly!
Along with their inventive combinations they have interesting flavors like Pickled Mango, yum.
The flavors are always constantly good and service is great. Love this little gem in Kawaihae.

Busy food truck, even with the locals. Lots of flavor choices. I am not a huge fan of shaved ice so I was not overly impressed.

BEST SHAVE ICE! AHH SOO GOOD! I recommend the specialities! Really good price! The small is a pretty big portion and my halo halo speciality only cost $ 5.25 perfect for the hot weather!

Ok, so I’ve had a lot of shave ice on all the islands. This one is my favorite.
We got the Halo-​Halo which is a Filipino dessert and has purple yam ice cream on top of the smoothest shave ice you’ve ever had.

The kids had their keiki rainbow with ice cream and the small is huge and with a ton of syrup. Just right.
My daughter dropped hers and they were so nice to replace it at no cost. Great service.

We’ve traveled all over the island trying shaved ice and THIS really is the best, even though other places claim to be. They are generous with the ingredients. Savor every bite!!!

The shaved ice specialties were better than the reviews I read before coming here. We had just left Hapuna Beach and were looking for something cool to munch on, and we found Big Island Shave Ice Co. I got the Halo Halo and my sister got the Pineapple Cream, but we ate each other’s because both were very delicious.
I am an ube ice cream fanatic so I might be biased but the Halo Halo was my favorite, with a generous scoop of ube ice cream on top of shaved ice (vanilla flavor? Not sure) and topped with boba, ube chunks, cantaloupe, and lychee jelly. It was basically a glorified shaved ice you’d find back in those Asian dessert cafes back in Cali. There were also whole green and red beans under the ice.
The Pineapple Cream was also great, very fluffy and flavorful shaved ice topped with condensed milk and a scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom.
Overall very delicious. We both got regulars which was a huge mistake… Ate too fast to avoid melted ice (but also because it was so yummy) and felt full and sick afterwards. Still worth though. The specials at regular size are $ 6.25 so I would recommend splitting a special between two people.

Finally made it here to try the halo halo! So filling, I skipped dinner. The rest of my group were less impressed with the traditional shave ice flavors (which is why I am only giving 4 stars), except the little one who ordered rainbow everywhere we went and said this one was the best yet.

Landed yesterday and dreamed about getting shaved ice all night. The almond joy was great

Amazing Shave Ice! This is a must have from now on. Every time I come back home to Kona I will be making the drive to get my fix. EVERYONE, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Always friendly and always a great place to cool off after a day at the beach. My typical stop on every vacation to the Big Isle!

Super yummy, fine shaved ice. So soft! Going to make the drive out there again one day. I want to try a different flavor even though the kimrah special was good. Bf had the root beer float shave ice, and although I don’t really care for root beer, it was good too.
And service was quick and friendly.

Hands down, best shaved ice on the island. Unique flavors and combinations, great toppings and add ons, finely shaved ice, and very friendly staff.

This place is amazing! The halo halo is by the far the best thing we had on the island. I almost we had a couple more days here just so we can try a different item everyday.
The line moves quickly so don’t be discouraged by the crowd.
The store is just a van that uses the empty parking lot of Blue Dragon. Don’t show up before 11:30am (we did) because you won’t see anyone in the parking lot. But for the rest of the day, you can be sure there will be a line in front of Big Island Shaved ice.

Da Bomb! Amazing had the lava flow and the halo halo. Both were great. Get extra condensed cream. So good. Best shaved ice I’ve had. It’s a must do in Hawaii

My wife and I tried a large shave ice with Mango, Guava, Lilikoi, and Snow Capped (topped with condensed milk).
The flavors were really really really on point — probably the best tasting flavors in shave ice that I’ve ever tried. I find that most shave ice syrups taste a bit artificial (and sugary). However, the flavors we got simply tasted non-​artificial, and actually like real mango, guava, and passion fruit, which was much appreciated.
The ice, however, was too slushy-​like. I enjoy shave ice that is finely shaved, but I also like being able to distinguish between the ice shavings. That made my shave ice more like a well-​flavored Icee than a well-​flavored shave ice.
However, it was still delicious and enjoyable. The service was nice, too. There isn’t much seating (just one picnic table), so people were sitting on the curbs or in their cars.
Bottom line, I’d recommend coming here to check it out, simply for the delicious flavors.

Located in the empty parking next to the Blue Dragon, this place has the real deal Shave Ice. That’s right — without the D at the end. The line is looong, but goes pretty quickly and the sizes are HUGE. They have two sizes — small and large; a variety of flavors (traditional, natural and cream); different flavors of ice cream (including UBE!) and all kinds of toppings. Bonus points for making what looks like a bomb-​ass HALO HALO.
I got a pretty standard order of blue vanilla cream and strawberry cream with vanilla ice cream. Super big and super ono. Awesome to have a standard ice shave place near the beaches with the good ice — like snow and not crunchy.

Was bummed that there was no Ululanis (in Maui) on the big island. I’ve been to a couple of the other shaved ice spots on the Big Island and was rather disappointed.

They have a rather unique menu: offering Sundaes and Halo Halo (popular choice). Saw an interesting assortment of fruit cream flavors.
Root Beer n Blue Vanilla Cream w/​snow cap was my combination. O wow: one of the greatest things I ever tasted. The shave ice was cut as fine as I have ever come across. The syrup was true to the description, not the imitation flavored crap.
Sampled some of the guava flavor. I was impressed how they were able to incorporate so much guava flavor and it speaks refreshing to boot
Just to see how the creamy flavors really stacked up, I went with strawberry cream + vanilla cream. The creaminess was enough to serve in lieu of ice cream.
Went you see a place that has a steady flow of customers, it’s legit. Pleased to hear they will eventually move into a permanent spot.
This place is so good, went here 3 days in a row. Can say with confidence, the best shave ice in Hawaii and that I ever have come across.
