This place is not located in downtown Kennett Square. The address is Kennett Square but it’s pretty off the beaten path from where you would expect it to be. The address says E. Street Rd but in point of fact the entry is on the road around the triangle intersection that this is located, Doe Run Rd. The only reason that I actually found it using my GPS, was because there was a French flag on the outside of the house on the E. Street Rd. Side. Yes, this bakery is located in the basement space of a house in a residential section. I love these kinds of places. It reminds me of the Gaspe peninsula in Quebec. If you are looking for a Metropolitan Bakery type baguette, this is not it. That having been said, it’s 10x better than any bread you will get from the bakery section of the local supermarket. The bread is very dense and chewy but lacks the crunch of the outside of the classic baguette. I also tried the rosemary and garlic boule — same as the baguette but very flavorful. When I arrived there it was in the afternoon. Understand that this place is only open three days Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:30AM until the bread runs out. Cash only.

Probably one of my favorite bakery experiences in the USA. The people are lovely, the smells are divine, the culture is delightful, and the bread is second to none. The boulle with garlic is perfection … If you can get the Cheddar cheese bread with tabasco… I sigh with happiness when I eat it with tomato soup!

Amazing bread. I plan my Sat and Sun around going by this place after 9:30. Whatever you get will be delicious and fresh. Grab a loaf or two and a bap and a brownie. You’re welcome.

Oh, my dear god, is this the best place ever. I spend about a month a year in France(in the Languedoc and Normandy, in particular) and I’ve been known to, umm, accidentally leave a kilo or so of Norman salt butter frozen in my luggage on the trip back, and the combination of that salt butter with these baguettes is a total mental trip back to a boulangerie in Bayeux. I’ve seriously just stood inside the door and eaten an entire baguette from this place, carbs be damned.

There really is no other place quite like this. You drive by, see if the flag is out, and if it is, you step into a wonderful little room with a cast iron stove and the smell of fresh bread. There are generally 4 or 5 different types of bread and every one that I have tried has been delicious. My favorite are probably the little $ 1 rolls. They are generally warm, wrapped in aluminum foil, and have a little pat of butter put in them when they are warm. The butter melts out and pools at the bottom of the aluminum and soaks back into the bottom of the roll. Sooo good! The place is cash only, so be prepared.

Love, love, love this little French bread place! They have bread only when the flag or sign is out. Good price and always fresh– such an adorable find!

There is the romantic thought of bread cheese and wine. With the addition of the Bakers At Red Lion this romantic idea can be a reality. If you are around on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday(from 930 until they sell out) you can smell the bread before you hit the door. Amazing baguettes, cheese and Tabasco bread, boules, brownies, croissants oh My GOD! Leave Longwood and the mushrooms in the dust. Go to Talulas for some cheese, here for bread and pick a winery and enjoy a Chester County weekend.

Bakers at Red Lion is an artisanal French inspired bakery located in a historic home in the village of Red Lion. The entrance is on Doe Run Road, off route 926, behind Longwood Gardens. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:30AM. French, Cheese, Oatmeal, Irish Wheat, Focaccia, Brownies… come experience the taste and smells and the sense of community. Come early for that bread hot out of the oven. Yummy!

My friend brought me here today, and oh my, this is by far the best bread you will ever eat. Free bap to new customers… a bap is a small warm bread/roll topped with a bit of course salt and melted butter in the middle, Mmm, so delicious! This place is a treasure waiting to be found.

One day driving home on 926, I passed a small sign. «Hmm, what did that say? Something about bread?» The next time I passed the same house, no sign. Then… the sign again. And finally one day, I took note. Fresh French Bread? I must investigate. So, what from what I could find on a few Internet searches, this little house bakery is truly a labor of love. It is only open on some Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The bread is usually available around 11:00am. Cash only. A standard loaf is $ 4, herbed is $ 6. There are also brownies for $ 1 and there were some English rolls available today also when I stopped by. The aroma alone walking into the little storefront is worth the trip alone. Today when I stopped, a little earlier than usual, the bread was still warm. Oh my. The bread is heartier than a traditional baguette. It is perfectly crispy, with a delicious middle. I’m not exactly sure what the salt is(grey?), but there is plenty for each bite. There are also some herbed breads. I don’t know how long the folks making the bread here will continue to keep this homefront bakery, so get out there and enjoy this labor of love while it lasts. Parking Tip: There is a little gravel spot next to the storefront on Doe Run Road.
