On the corner of North Front Street, where Maxwell’s Pizza used to be, is a recently opened Samuel’s Pub. We walked down last nite because we had a gift certificate and figured«Hey, why not.» We were surprised to be the only people dining at 6pm on a Friday nite and even more surprised at the lack of a crowd when we discovered how excellent their food is! They are currently in the midst of a menu transition and handling it well — we were told up front which items they no longer serve and told that the chef may be able to accommodate a special request should the remaining menu items not excite us. We chose flash fried wontons and a portabello appetizer, recommended by the server. Both were better than expected, though I could taste a hint of frying oil in the wontons that I trust is just a one time temperature issue. The cobb salad and chicken caesar wrap were satisfying and well made. All dressings are house made and excellent. The owner, server and chef all greeted us warmly and thanked us when we left. We’ll definitely be back.
