I had my first lunch at Smoke Box today after eyeballing it for a few years now when en route to Chandler’s. From what I can tell, its typically long-lunch hours, 10:00 a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m. They serve breakfast all day but I did not try that. I went for a smoked chicken sandwich box, which came with two sides. Other offerings were pork, ribs and I think fried chicken & chicken wings. You pull in on one side of the building, order & pay, then pull around to the other side to wait for the food. I will say, it was kind of a long wait. When I got to the window, however, I could see that the sides were made to order(the fried ones anyway). My potatoes & onions and okra went straight from the fryer to my plate. For the food — the chicken was fabulous. Very smoky and tender. the fried okra was crisp and salted just enough. The potatoes and onions were average, the onions a bit small/crispy — I’d like them cut bigger. The thing I was not expecting — the BBQ sauce tasted very commercial, store-bought sauce. Had I known that, I’d have had it left off. it was fine, but it really covered up the flavor of the meat, which was the star of the show. I hope the owner ventures into making his own sauce one day, that I would definitely try. But the thick, syrupy sauce was kind of like Sweet Baby Ray’s or something. Tasty but not the best compliment to the delicious chicken.
