This is one of the coolest cemeteries I’ve ever been to. It’s just off to the right of Maluhia Road as you’re just approaching Koloa. As is largely the case in life, people self-segregate here: the clean, more recent graves of Japanese decedents are there as you enter, flanking the gaily-decorated graves of Latinos behind. To the left are ancient headstones and markers placed for Japanese Hawaiians hundreds of years ago. These are all old, weather-worn and covered in lichen, many of them sculptural, and they are all beautiful. This is one of many sacred spaces on the island of Kauai and well worth a visit.
