I bought four not-terribly-expensive maps from Barry via his website and e-mail. He was prompt, informative, helpful, and friendly. Once I made my selections, he set up an online shopping cart for me so that I could quickly pay via credit card. The maps arrived next day, carefully packed. They’re as described, and I’m satisfied. I find Barry’s prices to be in line with the industry generally, which means that you should discuss price with him before purchasing. He’ll let you know if he can be flexible. Barry pencils his inventory number on the lower-right of the map recto. I don’t like that. He says it’s typical in the industry, and he’s probably right, but jeez, why not on the verso? Why not a micro barcode or some such tech marvel? I bought a couple of maps from other dealers at about the same time and they didn’t write on the maps. I purchased the maps as a gift to an organization that has many, many maps and trained conservators; they weren’t at all concerned about the pencil marks. So call me unreasonably picky. I’ll probably be buying more old maps, and I have Barry at the top of my list of dealers to keep an eye on.

I recently purchased a mid 18th century Vaugondy map of Bourgogne online, I am not local to La Jolla, so I could not view the map in person, or meet the seller. First, the map is beautiful and exactly as described and photographed. Secondly, the customer service could not be better. Extremely professional. I will be a repeat customer, and am confident recommending them to friends.

I had a very specific idea in mind for my boyfriend’s Christmas gift-our first Christmas together so of course, I wanted somethng unique. I was looking for an antique map of a very special and personal place. I searched and searched and low and behold Google led me to Barry and his antique map shop! I was absolutely tickled it was just right up the road in La Jolla! I called Barry and he spent over a half hour on the phone with me going through his inventory which he has beautifully catalogued on his awesome website! He was excited I had challenged him with a location he hadn’t heard of before, and asked questions and really spent his time wanting to help me. I narrowed it down to a few maps, drove to the shop in La Jolla(which is next to Pannekin and behind a little bookstore-not exactly ON the street, but just park on Girard and walk behind that little bookstore and you’ll see the small door to the shop) and the maps I wanted to see were awaiting me. It was totally worth sitting in the morning rush hour traffic. I could’ve gotten lost in there for hours. What an awesome shop! I had a hard time choosing! Finally, I made a decision and I was on my merry way, map and certificate of authenticity in hand. The service I received was superb from start to finsh. My boyfriend loved his gift, and I would certainly recommend this gem of a shop for something really special!
