I had their Phở and it hit the spot. It wasnt the best phở but the broth was warm and it did its job on a cold night.

Used to be better. When this location first opened, I would go weekly and enjoy a sushi combo. Went today, and noticed a distinct downturn of quality. From presentation(which was non-existant) to taste(bland at best), I can no longer recommend Shogun of La Jolla. I swear it was better just a couple of months ago. The seating is very limited. The dining room was full, even at 2:30pm. It is located right next to a game room, so the location is noisy. At least there are no TVs present. If you want sushi, there are far better places just outside of campus.

Out of all the places at PC to eat, this is top 2. An easy place to swing by between classes and grab a good bite. Most of the time my go to is the bowl mean combo, comes with miso soup, Cali roll 6 piece, and a chicken teriyaki bowl. The sauce on the bowl is my favorite. Also a good place to swing by, grab a table and study. During school sessions(Fall, Winter, Spring) is recommend to avoid lunch time here as it does get packed, then again so does the rest of PC.

Shogun is actually a place filled with memories for me…(cue a sad love story here). I remember the first time I had Shogun, I tried their volcano roll(I think that’s what its called) and it was amazing! Afterwards I decided to try their other items and it was«meh». I would say that Shogun is one of those places that you have to spend the bucks to get the bang. Cutting corners doesn’t make it! Items I’ve tried here: –Cheese Ramen: There is a noodle station right by Sungod Lounge, and I can see why most people choose not to dine there. I watched them make it and it was literally a packet of instant noodle thrown into a pot, cooked with MSG broth, and a piece of American cheese laid on top. I’m sure I could have made this at home by myself… –Katsu bowl: A bowl of rice with pieces of fried katsu on top. Lots of rice… katsu is not bad. Only wished that it was hot! –Bento box: You can choose the two entrees that you want, and it comes with rice/salad. I choose teriyaki chicken and the spicy chicken. Kind of like panda express except smaller portion. –California sushi roll: standard 8 pieces. Imitation crab, avocados… can’t complain. Pros: –Quick service. As an RA on campus, I came to Shogun to get $ 50 worth of sushi. Within 15 minutes, I was able to get 11 rolls. There was a line starting for other people for their orders, –Nice customer service. The cashier was helpful in helping me calculate how much $ 50 equivalence of rolls were, even if there was a line. Cons: –Okay pricing. I understand that they need to price the price for the location, so I can’t really complain. –Mediocre quality of food. They give a lot of rice… so sometimes you don’t get as much meat. –Confusing system. They call out numbers, but when people don’t come, it gets confusing. Fault of both customers and server, since they aren’t responsive when people need help. Tips/Observations: –They have quite a few daily deals, so when you go in, they have a whiteboard of all the daily specials! Take advantage because they are pretty decent and can save your wallet from drying up. –If you order noodle soup from the sushi area, it technically comes from the noodle station. Head over there if you want to save some time. –Noodle bar closes a bit earlier… so just be attentive of the hours. –There are pool tables here. I believe you exchange your ID and pay some cash for a certain amount of time. If you have leisure time, feel free to play! Overall, I would come here when I am craving some bomb rolls. Like I mentioned, if you are wiling to pay the extra dollars, then you will get some pretty decent rolls!

Pretty good place to get Asian food on campus besides TapEx or Hi Thai. However, if you’re obsessive about germs, beware because the cashier will hand you your card back along with a napkin. One time they also handed me a paper cup with water already inside, which had been sitting for a while. Why can’t they let the customers get their own napkins and water? And, there is no place by the trashcans to dump the soup. They also messed up my order once after making me wait a long time. I ordered an udon noodle soup and got the shin ramyun bowl. If I had known I would be eating shin ramyun I would just have cooked some in my on campus apartment. Also, their california rolls are sort of sticky like another reviewer said. Their chicken katsu bowls and crunchy rolls(basically a California roll with deep fried batter) aren’t a bad deal. The noodle place right next store has better noodles in my opinion. Also it gets really crowded here around lunch time so be sure to get here early or sit somewhere else.

I have a co-worker who regularly gets chicken katsu and rice from Shogun. I finally caved from smelling this delicious food two offices away and decided to check the place out. Maybe I should have ordered exactly what she gets, because what I got was(*shrug*). First of all their menu is kinda overwhelming. So many options. And the specials! The cheese ramen thing was an interesting choice. Little toooo interesting for me, though. So I went with the chicken katsu over spicy noodle soup, cause that sounded pretty good. I should have realized that it wouldn’t come with the delicious curry sauce that katsu usually comes with, but it was too late when I saw my bowl — which was presented wonderfully, at least. The taste was alright. Not bad, just alright. I had been warned twice about the spiciness of the bowl while ordering, and I was sadly underwhelmed by how not-warning-worthy it actually was. I understand why they have a lot of «meh» ratings. But I can’t beat the convenience of the location, and I definitely should try something else off their vast menu before writing Shogun off. I need to go get that Katsu bowl!

Shogun isn’t a disgusting place, but it isn’t the best Japanese food. Or Asian food I guess I would say because they sell phở? I choose to go here when I feel like it, but I don’t necessarily crave it. I’ve gotten two different lunch specials, and both weren’t the best decision. The first time I got a curry bowl, and I didn’t fancy it that much… Not too sure why. The next time I went, I got the Japanese spicy chicken combo, I believe it was. I wasn’t that much of a fan for that either. The main reason why I got them was because they were a lunch special, so it was a decent deal. But I think the main thing I’ll get from this place is their chicken katsu bowl. I actually really like it! Sometime I’ll probably try their noodles and sushi, but I’m a little scared… I see people getting sushi here all the time, but I’m just really particular about the sushi I like. I never sit inside because it gets really packed, especially around lunchtime, and it’s really hot. The people are nice and the prices are decent.

Shogun can be really good if you buy the special of the day or the specials that they have on the board. I would give them 3 stars, but they have bibimbap and their chicken Katsu with Japanese curry is awesome. I really wanna try the eel bowl next time I go. Maybe I’ll give then 5 Stars if it really good. It’ll go down to 3 stars if it is just okay.

I felt like I was eating just to eat. No real flavors that masks the cardboard taste from the noodles. You basically pay for convenience if you’re eating here.

Every week I go here on thursday. The curry bowl day for me. I like the chicken teriyaki and the chicken katsu. Sometimes the chicken doesn’t taste as good, but when it is normally it is total worth. The servers are really nice too! I hate how they don’t have the combo meal special anymore of sushi, miso soup, and chicken bowl.

Side 1: noodles. A large variety of noodle soups. The daily special and the ones on the board are going to be your best values. My favorite is Friday’s special, the jjajangmyeon with the thick goopy black bean sauce. The udon is also good, both regular and curry. The ramens… well, this city has great ramen joints. Frankly, you’d be better off going to the Sunshine store and getting one of the $ 2 big instant ramen bowls and spend the extra money on some edamame. Never had their phở. Side 2: fast food and sushi. The katsu is good. Whether you get it in a bowl, combo, whatever, yum. The sushi is not bad, but unless you go there at an off-rush time, it is slow. But think about it — fresh-made sushi as fast food… yeah, tough to pull off with a small staff. I’ve never had anything bad though. The other fast food is meh, not bad but not great. It’s hard to keep things their best in steam trays. The California rolls they include with a number of the combos are the stickiest I’ve ever encountered. Hopeless and hard to swallow. The gyoza are OK.

Nothing to see here. Move along folks. Despite their primary competition being Panda, you’re trapped like rat when it comes to food options on campus. With that being said, choosing your lunch comes down to the lesser of two evils. Shogun offers a variety of choices, from phở to sushi, and it doesnt do any one of them particularly well. But it really doesn’t matter since you’re hungry and well, campus life sucks doesn’t it? It could be worse, at least you didn’t lose your parking space just to eat here. Look on the bright side, the people are nice and you didn’t have to eat Subway again. I had the Mega Spicy Chicken grease shack combo. Let’s just say, I’m writing this review from a sacred place. At least my insides are well lubricated.

bottom line: good pricing, large quantity, okay food. If you’re looking for asian food, it’s certainly a better option than panda express(also located in price center). Out of the options in UCSD price center, this is one of my more frequented places. Lots of different combo meal options here, so you can try a bunch of things, which is the for the best because it’s kind of hit or miss. Chicken katsu is what you’d expect, and extremely filling. This place can satiate a sushi craving, but the rolls can go either way. I’ve gotten the tempura a few times, both shrimp and veggie, and found it soggy. Bowls are a good deal for a lunch. There is some inside seating, but not a ton. During the lunch rush when UCSD is in session you’ll likely have to sit outside. Venue is connected with a small pool hall of approximately 4 pool tables where you can play by the hour.

Ermmmm… yeah…not so much. Crowded. Hot. Price is okay. Poor atmosphere. If the menus are anything of a tell how the food is and cleanliness of the kitchen, then just leave.

Pricing: Good. The specials are a good deal. Quality: Poor-Good. Food tasted all over the place. Turnaround: Excellent. This is a fast food/take out joint. Service: Good. Pack your food, ring you up, and done. Most of the items on the menu is kind of pricier than expected specially at the portions they provide and the food is not even that amazing. The specials are usually good though if you just need to quick bite to sate the growling stomach. Flavor-wise unfortunately, the food is all over the place where they taste a bit of Japanese, Hawaiian, Korean, Chinese, and etc. Not in a very good fusion kind of way either. In addition to the good special deals, another upside is that all the food is already made and is on display. You simply order the food, watch the server pack it up right in front, and ring you up. The entire process is super fast and you can be on your way in no time. That also means not much for the server to mess up on either though I do notice that one of them has trouble with English and could not answer me when I asked if the special came with any sides.

This place is really NOT bad at all. Perched above the quad of PC theatre, Shogun is a pretty tasty place to go for a good variety of Asian foods– there is the noodles side and then the rice side(sushi, bibimbaps, bento boxes, etc). I wanted a good meal since I was hungry and in the area– so I got the Vegetarian Bento. It came with 2 veggie tempura pieces, 1 eggroll, rice, salad with this great dressing, and a vegetarian sushi roll. And I was pleased with most of the bento box: there was plenty of fresh avocado and the tempura was not soggy and nasty~ so YAY! Also– miso soup(which makes mi so happy)! There wasn’t anything too extraordinary though: a bit too much dressing, the rice was just a bit too soft and squishy for me, and the miso soup had these weird filling things in it. The food was ok. The service is quick and polite. Worth checking out and eating here!

Shogun BBQ chicken on Wednesday for $ 6.25 that comes with a drink! Not baddd! :D But. i ended up getting the Combo Meal Special, which, for $ 1.25 more, I snagged sushi rolls and miso soup. LETMETELLYOU ‘BOUTDATSOUP. tastes like they dropped rice in the miso andnforgot about it all together. Im spasming — in a bad way. Oh and the line at lunch. Beware!

Marginally better than Shogun Fusion Noodle, which is a few feet away. I waited in a long, slow-moving line and finally got to order something. On a whim, I selected the veggie bento box. Then I got to wait plenty more until the sushi-maker was able to add his contribution to my bento box.(His hands move fast, but he was seriously backed up with other orders.) The minutes ticked by. Finally I had my order and went out into the sun to join my group. Most of my friends were finishing their lunches. My food was vaguely OK, but nothing tasted especially great. I’m not inclined to return, but the corporate fast-food places on the ground level weren’t especially enticing either. What’s a Unilocaler to do?

Came by for a quick meal after picking up my Sun God wristband. At $ 5 for a chicken katsu don bowl, pricing was not bad for on-campus food. I’m not sure why this place only has 2.5 stars, but the chicken katsu was crispy and fresh and the short-grain rice was good. I probably wouldn’t have stopped by if I saw the Unilocal rating prior to ordering, but I’m glad I didn’t.

Shogun is like any other eatery on the UCSD campus: Relatively expensive and food is either hit or miss. I go here for the chicken katsu bowl($ 5.00 not including tax), and it’s a passable lunch. Honestly, I’d rather get this than the greasy Chinese food over at Panda Express nearby. I hear there’s a 20% off sushi after 4pm on Fridays? I wonder how that will be. Last time I remember, their sushi wasn’t bad! Then again, I wouldn’t eat here so often since I’m now a poor college student who cannot afford to eat out every day.
